How Do Your Pets Behave When You Read? (5/12/24)

Every female cat I’ve ever had has felt the urge to plonk themselves right in the book I’m reading. If the book is vertical they they’ll rub their heads against the corner. I love it
My cats generally love it as I am sitting in a favorite chair to read, so I usually end up with one, two, or three cats in my lap at the same time. And, as Robert mentions, the corners of hardcovers are especially loved as places to scratch their faces.
The dogs ignore the books, the iPad and the audiobooks. Until one wants attention. Then she pushes the book/device aside or crawls onto my chest and blocks my vision by leaning on my face. It’s cute when the dachshund does it. Sometimes painful and/or damaging when the boxer does.
If it’s hard copy, my cat claims ownership by rubbing her head on the edges as do Robert & Stacia’s. I’m curious now to know if this only applies to female cats.If it’s electronic, she walks repeatedly on the screen.
If it’s audio, she leaves the room.

Ditto on the dogs. I’ve got two big, Human sized ones and when they decide they do want attention, they just bash their head into my book and it goes flying. We Got a puppy about four months ago, who has turned out to be a tiny dog, much to our surprise (rescue is full of surprises,) And she sits in my reading chair with me and likes to chew on the corners of the book while I’m reading.
Cats are pretty funny and jump onto you right in the middle of a major revelation or moment in the book. It's like they know.

My cat* used to demand attention if I went for a book, rubbing against me, rubbing against the book, walking between me and the book, and eventually just sticking her butt in my face. She knows better now and curls up beside me so I can rub her tummy while I read. That way everyone gets what they want. *OK, she's actually not MY cat, she's the neighbors' cat. But she comes over all the time and acts like she owns the place. *shrug*

(Do your fish tap out spoilers on the aquarium glass in morse code? Does your cat demand an immediate rectal examination? Do your dogs raid the pantry while you're distracted?)
