SOLVED. Adult fiction about some jungle expedition where plot is relayed in a series of emails [s]

Hi All

I'm trying to track down a book I started about some expedition where a
group of people who are accompanied by some military people who are
searching for something.

When - last year....I think the book was released recently
Genre - fiction, adult suspense

Details - The expedition is attacked by a bunch of bats
and most of the people on the expedition are killed. At the beginning of
the book most of the plot is relayed via emails between two professors.

That's all I can remember. Any ideas?
