The new thrilling novel from Megan Miranda, the instant New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls, The Last to Vanish, and The Only Survivors.
When Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake’s longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she’s warily drawn back to the town—and people—she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel’s not the only relic of the past to return: a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge…including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.
(view spoiler)[ I feel like we knew this would be her mom's car, right? now to wonder who all knew. I feel like Caden knew something. . .did the dad covering up something Caden did?
It's interesting that her dad left her the house, almost like an apology
I wonder what's going on with Jamie and I wonder about the neighbor. Will they rekindle? (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ ooooh, it gets deeper could one of the boys have done something to both women? is that what dad was covering up? I just don't think her dad was the one to hurt each woman but I'm not really sure
Caden seems like such an obvious choice that it makes me think it's a misdirection. Could it be Gage? He seemed shocked by the car in the water but Caden seemed like he didn't want them to pull it up.
I'm curious if she and Nico will finally figure it out
and where did all that money go that her mom took out?
and where on earth is Jaime? and who killed her mom?? (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[ wow, I'm really sad BOTH brothers have been hiding so much and they tried so hard to keep hiding it from her. I thought the list might not be a repair list but might be a search list. I didn't realize it would be a list for her to search until she'd found the jewelry. I'm so sad her mom came back for her and something happened.
What was the dad doing to these women? Why couldn't they leave?
and I hope she forgives Nico but maybe it's better if she just leaves this town. . .
and the dare with the kids is just so gross. going into stranger's houses and creeping around. Gross (hide spoiler)]
this was a fun little mystery (view spoiler)[ I wondered how the missing boy tied in to the story.
and ROY! I really thought it was Gage too and I'm sad his dad did as well!! so many secrets, if the kids had just talked instead of being angry at each other, this book could have been about 4 chapters long! lol I love that she worked on houses and fixed that one up. I love that they split it once they realized why the dad had given it to her (to protect it from Roy)
poor Jaime. what a tragic, horrible accident (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[Wow! Why would there be TWO cars, especially if one was her mother's? I did feel like it would be her mother's car and with the car and the luggage being hers, obviously it appears to be foul play. So, I wonder if her mother was really the one who left her the so-brief note.
I suspect both Caden and the father. Caden doesn't seem too concerned about Jamie and I find that very strange. It just seems like with the mom's note, her luggage and car found, and not having heard from her that someone, Caden or the father (?) offed her. I agree that giving Hazel soul custody of the house seemed rather strange, not the typical thing so at first I was wondering what had his two sons done wrong; but, now I'm wondering if HE did wrong. hmmm (hide spoiler)]
(view spoiler)[So, Jamie is (or at least was) okay as of her phone call to Hazel, but she sure doesn't trust a soul! Poor Sonny, and why did someone kill her and who did it? I had a feeling that her mom's letter to her was written by someone else, so it now appears that someone copied and changed it. Ugh...WHO?
Yeah, it's really messed up that they hid so much from her AND to protect what one thought was his dad's wrong-doing. Ugh...awful! (hide spoiler)]
Wow! Just wow! (view spoiler)[ First of all, I am so glad that Jamie was okay in the end! That was an awful accident though. Secondly, I'm glad the siblings worked things out with the house. I hate secrets because I feel like they always hurt, even if the secrets never come out. (hide spoiler)]
I loved Pete's words in the boat (view spoiler)[ about how secrets eat and they never do good. that he wanted to let the secrets out now that the father had passed
the first accident with the wife/mother was equally awful. but to keep it for so long. . .there were so many points in the story that could have been avoided had everyone just TALKED and stopped with the secrets!
Roy would have gotten away with less and caught sooner if they'd actually talked and realized it wasn't each of the siblings doing things! They might have suspected him! (hide spoiler)]
