This was an enjoyable book set in 1960, and as someone who was alive then, I thought she did a good job of capturing the era - the clothes, the customs, the glamour of Atlantic City which later faded. The names are also appropriate - Marilyn and Shirley, for instance. The heroine may seem naive for a 20-year-old, as a college student who has barely been kissed. But this wasn't unlikely at the time.
After being dramatically caught kissing the rabbi's son, Marilyn is banished from New York for the summer to her great-aunt in Philadelphia and the Jersey shore. But Aunt Ada turns out to be much more fun than anticipated, and there is a cute lifeguard. A lot of the story has to do with the limits on life choices for women, especially in traditional communities where marriage and children were expected. The story was rather predictable but still fun
