Welcome to the That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on May 1st and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

It might be over the top, but since this is meant to be a lighthearted read, the sarcastic tone of the MC's pov is quite fitting.

below is just a running commentary as I read the book

ok I take it back this gen Z (or is it more millennial) lingo is getting old real fast, it's a little jarring for a fantasy
Her brother is named Cumin?? and there's a Chili somewhere?? oh poor Cherry
and of course cinammon rolls for breakfast are just a normal occurrence in this family
ok I like this twist that the demons aren't inherently bad

Started this morning and current thoughts through Chapter 3:
(view spoiler)[I love the sass - as cliche as it may be it's great that "she's not like other girls" - it's just refreshing. The plot is moving pretty quick which not complaining about - sometimes that works (i.e. Kings of the Wyld) on this more lighthearted fantasy vibes. I know there were trigger warnings so it will be interesting to see if it stays lighthearted or not. (hide spoiler)]

This is a re-read for me, so I'm enjoying reading my notes/comments from the first run-through as I go.
(view spoiler)[ I absolutely love the pun names! Maybe it's just my wonky sense of humour, but that just makes me laugh.
The part where Cin's mum calls Cummin every other child's name and then resorts to just 'middle child' was waaay too relatable.

yes, i like how quickly the plot is moving. though I have to say, I didn't see the trigger warnings before so that'd be fun lol

Since I'm doing audiobook, I didn't see any trigger warnings either, but I haven't felt that any were needed so far. Maybe a little misogyny (that one family of brothers is just horrible). And I am getting a little Legends and Lattes vibe.

I agree that the scene with Cinna's mom keeps getting the name wrong was so funny. And yes, the naming of characters is so on point.

Updates/thoughts through end of chapter 6: (view spoiler)[ I am *really* liking this - it's funny and weirdly heart warming. I definitely see the Legends & Lattes vibes but definitely with some spice (no pun intended lol). I am intrigued by the points system and seeing how that works out. There are definitely notes of insta love on Fallon's side but it works. lol (hide spoiler)]

The writing definitely gets better from Ch 4 onwards, and I am looking forward to see what they get up to.

(view spoiler)[I find Fallon's little teasing while they're in the bayou fun especially since it brings Cinnamon right into his arms each time.

Oh boy did I enjoy that scene by the river. And Cinnamon killing a gator? that was kinda hot.

i find Fallon's reasoning for getting married very acceptable and sound hahha he's met her parents, they've saved each other and been naked together, sounds good enough for me

where did fallon learn all this human dirty talk 😳

(view spoiler)[DRAGON!? with out wings?! I am so surprised but love it. I wonder what will happen now that there are potentially additional members of their crew for the mission. You can tell that Fallon is growing on Cinnamon and she is totally going to give in to him at the end. I do wonder if there will be a 3rd act break up of sorts as that happens a fair amount in romance but also - what's going to happen with the last 2 cups? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I was NOT expecting one of the chalice's to just be there but okay. lol I also have to say Cinn is taking things so easily - finding out she's his mate and he's known since day 1, that they are now married, he knew some kind of magical birth control, etc. I also appreciate that the guy is on birth control for once. This has had a bit more plotline of action/fantasy versus the romance than what I expected (at least until the second half of chapter 9). Fallon, in spite of his violent streak, now seems increasingly so sweet when he is with Cinnamon, with a bit of cockiness.

(view spoiler)[ Do I love a good 'I know you can fight, but I will burn the city for hurting you' love interest? Heck yeah!
Is Fallon a possessive sassy demon who is both cinnamon roll grump (irony) and scary guard dog? Yes!
Am I loving the banter between the two of 'yeah he dragged me out on this adventure - but oh well I'll just roll with the insanity because why not'? Oh definitely.

The spice was interesting, kind of a - we just finished a battle, oh yeah btw you're my mate, let's shag - kind of deal, and a bit milder than the TW page made it seem. But still, kept the same vibes as the rest of the book. (hide spoiler)]

So I've just finished it, I think most of us have since it is such an easy read. I also wanted to find out what happened lol

Up to 12 (view spoiler)[ I have to say I did not suspect the boat to be a trap at all, so that was surprising. also same Brianna! I was not expecting the chalice to come to them but hey it makes things easier . I really like this island, wish they could stay there. I also did not give it a second thought that Cin was taking it easy, I just rolled with it. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ I'm quite surprised with the level of planning they had to do to approach the island @Leslie yes, there's definitely a fair bit of action. I forgot all about the hero's party but I guess here they are though Cin took them down quite easily, or rather Fallon did I suppose.

Ok here's the one part I can't forgive. Fallon forcefully putting Cin to sleep. It just makes me feel ick, like the next time they have an argument again would he keep doing that. I'm glad she is finally reunited with her family in the end. (hide spoiler)]

Overall thoughts/responses:
(view spoiler)[@Leslie - I agree that there was a bit more plot than expected and although some spice, it wasn't the main focus until the last few chapters.

@LiteraryCryptid - I find the TW interesting since I read them and spent a majority of the book concerned how I would have issues (past trauma), but nothing was super severe that I felt I needed warnings. I am still glad they were there as I know others who may have had issues if they were not forewarned.

@Dia - I *completely* forgot about the Hero's Party until they were all of a sudden there and of course they were handled quite easily. I also agree that Fallon acted a bit out of line with that.

Overall I still don't know what to rate it. I enjoyed it, found it was funny, and will definitely be reading the next one in the series at some point, but I don't know if I will remember a whole of what happened within a few days. I don't think it will stick with me. (hide spoiler)]

Just finished
(view spoiler)[ There were a few twists and turns especially with the next to the last chalice, but the one brief scene that felt unnecessary and that was the kraken scene.
@Brianna I totally agree with your overall assessment - enjoyable, funny and yes I want to read the next one. But yeah, there were parts of it will end up not sticking with me.
Speaking of the next one, looking at the title and description, I think it's going be about Felix. I hope it is - he was one of my favorite characters. (hide spoiler)]

@ Catherine - I would agree not a stellar/amazing book but definitely a great in between read for vacation or if you need something easy and fun!

Looks like there are 17 chapters (16 + epilogue) so would 4 days be okay? 4 chapters per day and on the last day 4 chapters + epilogue? It's only a like 3-5 pages looks like so on the shorter side.
