The real Son of God is at your side. He is beginning to turn you into the same kind of thing as Himself. He is beginning, so to speak, to ‘inject’ His kind of life and thought, His Zoe, into you; beginning to turn the tin soldier into a live man. The part of you that does not like it is the part that is still the tin.
We are made in the image of God and we carry Christ within us. When we are consciously aware of this we not only bring Christ to those around, it also changes us from within. We may think this work is done all by ourselves, but in reality, it is Christ who changes us.
8 – IS CHRISTIANITY HARD OR EASY? I must admit this chapter stumped me a bit. Lewis says Christianity is both hard and easy but somehow he never truly comes to the point. Did I miss something?
9 – COUNTING THE COST To be transformed in Christ is a life-long process. We may think that overcoming this or that sin is enough to get us over the hump. These changes will not make us perfect, and Christ seeks to perfect us.
10 – NICE PEOPLE OR NEW MEN
When we Christians behave badly, or fail to behave well, we are making Christianity unbelievable to the outside world.
There is a fallacy to believe that the world is divvied up between Christians and non-Christians. The reason why there is little distinction between Christians and non-Christians is that we Christians don’t truly follow the teachings, and natural disposition in non-Christians will make them quite reasonable people in general. To truly become a Christian and be noticed as such is to become humble and not rest on our merits or virtues.
11 -THE NEW MEN The theory of evolution envisions progress to be that men become ever brainier. But this is not what is in store for us. We are to transform from creatures of God to sons and daughters of God. Christ is the new man. We are to become one with him by going out of ourselves.
Until you have given up your self to Him you will not have real self. Sameness is to be found most among the most ‘natural’ men, not among those who surrender to Christ.
