Five stars

Jordan Kells and Edra Tendric are getting closer, but still resisting—largely because Edra’s lesser dragon courting rituals are very different from your average gay human’s courting rituals. So, as they tiptoe around attraction and anxiety over crossing species boundaries (and all the social implications that would raise in this very divided human world); they still have to work together and solve some baffling thefts of important mytho artifacts (a vampire mirror, elvish armor).

I love reading how Nichols leads these two strong, compassionate characters through their paces: determined to do the right thing, and yearning for something personal that is better than what they’ve had up till now. All the dancing around emotions and social prejudices can be frustrating, but it’s necessary and believable in its frustration.

And it’s only book two of 8.

I am loving this series because of Nichols’ writing, and because of both the situation and the characters. Here we get to see Edra really work with dragons (greater dragons), while Jordan gets all-too-close and personal with merfolk who even in the lost mythological world were difficult at best.

Wouldn’t it be fun to have this made into an actual streaming series? Yeah, I have no faith in Hollywood. But I can dream—like Jordan and Edra.

Big hint: we get much closer to a kind of happy ending here. I needed that.
