Gyan K I generally try to wait until a book has raked up enough reviews (at least 1000 or more; preferably 5000). I also rarely pick up a book that has <4 stars. I have found I can’t entirely rely on my favorite reviewers and booktubers to guide me and I need more data, from the readers at large, before I can make that decision. Because I have limited time, I want to make the most of it reading only the books I know I have the greatest odds of finding to my liking/loving. l am interested to see how people select which books they want to read.

Chris St Laurent | 120 comments Good question, I try to stick with 3.5 and up if I am paying, if the book is free or really cheap I will give it a try. Picking up books for free and reduced price pushes me out of my comfort zone, I have read some really great books this way.

Cassandra 🍁☕️📚 (blondie2611) | 151 comments I notice I tend to read more of the lower rating reviews over the 4 to 5 star reviews. Sometimes the ratings influence whether I want to read a book or not. I also wonder if I’m not giving a book a fair chance because of it. I used to force myself to finish a book I didn’t like. Now I refuse to waste my time on a book that is making me miserable.

Gyan K I agree with dnfing a book that doesn’t spark joy :) no point in torturing oneself when there are so many other great books out there.

Anthony Brooks (asbrooks88) I normally look at the rating but also read the reason why it got the rating.

Lauren (iniysa) | 149 comments I generally don't look at the ranks or even the reviews before I read a book. I will after, to see if anyone else felt the same way about the book.

Susete Kunkel | 61 comments Not really, I have really enjoyed some books that got a lot of hate, and hated some that got a lot of love

becs | 178 comments I typically wont look at a books reviews until I've already started it, and lately I've just been reading random books I find at the library that I find interesting, and its really quite refreshing because you don't have (subconscious or conscious) opinions affecting your choices on a book to read because nobody is talking about it.. which of course being recomended a book is nice sometimes but all of booktok is just reading whats popular, for example. After the fact that I start to read and look a book up, though, I really like seeing everyone's opinions and how they differ from my own. typically i'll find that seeing someones good or bad review can really open my eyes up to little quirks or habits of an author but at the same time trying to not let them effect my own opinion unless I truly believe it.

message 9: by Gyan (new)

Gyan K That is a refreshing and courageous way to select books. Going in essentially oblivious to what others think about it and making up your own mind about it first.

radhika | 16 comments I do check the ratings and sometimes a review makes me not want to read it, but then I do read it to check if the book deserves more or another critical review.

message 11: by Antonella (new)

Antonella No, I am too stubborn to let anything stop me if I decide to read a book let alone lower rating.

message 12: by Rori (new)

Rori | 99 comments usually the books I want to read I won't be interested in what other people think about them. but if I'm not quite sure about a book I'd look up reviews if it got 3.5 ⭐ then I'd read some of the reviews if they look good I'd buy the book if not then I won't buy it.

some books have 4 ⭐ but I still don't get them cuz I also like to read 1 ⭐ reviews

message 13: by Jo (new)

Jo Kerr | 76 comments I let it inform me but it doesn’t define whether I read a book as much as the content of a review.

I’ve read some books I enjoyed that didn’t get 4 or 5 stars overall. For me it’s like film reviews - everyone has their opinion and sometimes I just want to form my own by watching a film even if it got poor reviews from top critics.

So I tend to read a couple of reviews that rate a book higher then a couple that rate it lower to get a feel for pros and cons before deciding if I will read it.

I also count some books out if the triggers are not for me.

Long way to explain that star rating is not so important for me, but what reviewers have written will sway my decision 😊

message 14: by Tweets66 (new)

Tweets66 | 9 comments I may read a couple of reviews but generally stick to certain kinds of books that I am fairly certain will appeal to me. Occasionally, I will try something different and then certainly reviews will carry a bit more weight.

message 15: by Hannelore (new)

Hannelore Gorter | 12 comments It doesn't. But I do like to read all the differences in opinions.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

no because someone could say a book is horrible and I could think 5 star. I don't like the rating system because honestly I am not a writer how can I rate

message 17: by Maia (new)

Maia | 54 comments it’s not necessarily the ratings that decide if i’m gonna read a book because i always forget to look at them but if i’m in the middle of a book and i’m enjoying it but then i see a negative review i start disliking the book and idk why

message 18: by The Cozy Cat (new)

The Cozy Cat (thecozycat) | 22 comments Sometimes. If it's anything below 3.5 stars I'm usually weary and trust it's probably not that great. Anything 3.5+ I'll read. Popular books I usually end up loving and trust they have high ratings and buzz for a reason, and they usually don't disappoint me so I stick to a lot of popular stuff over indie stuff, though, I would like to start giving more indie reads a chance. Especially once I get my follower counts up so that I can receive physical copies of arcs, because I prefer physical copies over digital ones.

message 19: by Marko (new)

Marko Jevtić | 1 comments To be honest, not at all. The problem with "today's" readers is the fact that they are getting "too picky". I often find a lot of inspiration even in reading a bad book, because as an amateur writer, I can learn a lot from being introspective about what I actually disliked about the book that I read.

Reading only the summaries, reviews, or basing my decision solely on some decimal number, is actually depriving myself of an experience. I like to think that most readers here like stories and what other people have to say. It can be really bad, in both quality or originality, but you can learn a lot from that too, IMHO.

message 20: by Abi (new)

Abi | 104 comments not at all tbh

message 21: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (restlesspixie) | 12 comments It really doesn't at all for me. I read what interests me, and ratings are opinions from others. It's like those movie critics who say a movie was terrible. That is one person's opinion, and mine might be different once I see/read it myself.

message 22: by Marti (new)

Marti always ksjdjajaja

Kindle Jenner | 90 comments A lower ranking might make me put it off for a while, but it won’t stop me from reading it.

message 24: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 Zero. Ordinarily I read the book, review it, and then read other book reviews mostly from within my book groups but occasionally other sources.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Marko so true you have a good point

message 26: by Ali (new)

Ali Smith I save books based on their covers ngl. No idea what it’s about, I’ll pick a book at random then start reading with no idea what it is going into it. It’s more fun that way. However, I think it’s very easy to spot a good writer from a bad one. I usually give the writer at least 20% of a read through and if I’m not feeling it, I check out the reviews to see if others aren’t feeling it. Sometimes people are in the same boat as me and other times people love it. So it’s kinda interesting looking at it that way.
