Sabriel is a senior at school when her father, the necromancer Abhorsen, goes missing. She sets off on a quest over the Wall into the Old Kingdom to find him, pursued by the dead and aided by a mysterious cat and a mysterious man.

I’ve had this on the shelf forever, meaning to read it, but actually ended up listening to the excellent audio from the library (read by the wonderful Tim Curry). It was a lot darker than I expected but overall I enjoyed it - full of common tropes but brought together successfully and with the occasional bit of sly wit. No cliffhangers either. While there are two successor books (which I also own and must get to), this one is complete in itself.
