message 51: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen let out a sigh of relief when he agreed, the box jumping of the ground and into her arms as she moved toward the door, checking the street in both directions before leaving the small home, heading toward the edge of town. When her family's home had burned, the servant's house had been left untouched. Now Gen used it to store little treasures she found, and writings of events that occurred in a diary of sorts. It was about a five minute walk out of town, but it was almost all on a trail, a shortcut could take them through the forest, but it was too dark to safely navigate the forest at this point.

message 52: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion looked around and felt a sense of nostalgia wash over him. He knew of this path. He remembered bits and pieces of being a child and running through this area. He opened his mouth to speak but decided not speak of it just yet. She may already know that this was where he first met a young girl. Quite possibly this very same girl.

message 53: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) It was like a walk down memory lane for Gen. She saw the slight break in the bushes where she had first met Bastion by trying to frighten him, popping out of the bushes with an old jester mask. They passed the place where they would meet when they wanted to run rampant around the forest. People would think that to castle kids would meet in the castle and run off together, but what made their friendship better was the mystery of it. No one knew they were best friend, and when they passed in the halls of the palace, all it took was a look for them both to begin planning their escapes, and running through town to meet. She hoped the way she was taking him now would bring something up in him. They pulled some of their best practical jokes on this road with traveling merchants.

"It's not far now, but we have to leave the path to get there," she told him, looking over her shoulder at him, her feet steady on the overgrown path, a slight outline of a house coming into view. The broken beams and ashes off another not far behind it.

message 54: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger There was a house not too far from their current position. His eyes widened if for a brief moment. A feel of belonging and of yearning gnawed at him. He had to see if things had changed. If the squirrels still scurried around the little wooden home he built. If the carvings he made in the trees of ravens and hummingbirds still could be recognized as his symbols of rebellion and new life. If the scent of baked pastries and laughter still enchanted these grounds. He stopped and closed his eyes. "So, Raven was it? This place. It was something special to both of us at one point, wasn't it?

message 55: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen stumbled slightly as he spoke, not responding until she pushed open the door, letting him inside. She grabbed matches and settle by the fire, trying to kindle some sort of fire to keep them warm. "Yeah. This place has always been special to me. It's the closest I can get to my father. We used to use it though, as a hideout, as place to hide after we stole bread from the bakery or candy from the old lady on King St. We also used to use it for a place to store little trinkets we found," she admitted. "Do you remember me at all yet?" she asked softly, the matches not catching enough to make a fire, sitting back on her heels and looking up at him, his box sitting just beside her on the ground.

message 56: by Joseph (last edited Apr 11, 2015 04:48PM) (new)

Joseph Ballenger He shook his head. "Only parts. Very hazy still." He noticed a fireplace in the far back of the house and looked back at Gen who was desperately trying to light match. He formed a small grin before he lit his hand with a small flame. "Allow me."

With one flick of his finger, the flame jumped from his fingers into the fireplace setting it a blaze. "It's been a while since I've experienced warmth from a fireplace."

message 57: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) She stepped back away from the fire as it lit up, her hands almost numb from the cold. She had always had a problem with her hands being cold. Her fingers would go numb more quickly than any of her friends. She pulled a chair close to the fire, rubbing her hands together. "You want to clear the haziness?" she offered, thinking she may as well tell him everything so he could be angry with her about having the life he should have had if he hadn't sacrificed himself for her. "It's a long story though, you may want to find a seat, just not the one by the window, it's broken, you'll fall right through it."

message 58: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion went to the table and, one by one, pressed down on the chairs ever so slightly to check their durability. He picked one that was against the wall and sat it next to Raven. After he sat down, he placed the bow down next to her. "Yeah, just as long as you keep to your word to fixing me up."

message 59: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "I'll keep to my word, but I won't be much good with shaking hands, so talking will have to come first," she told him, sparing him an apologetic glance, still trying to get her hands functioning again. "You probably remember that we met on that path. I tried to scare you with a mask but you weren't scared, you took it from me. I don't know quite what did it, but we were fast friends. My name is Genevieve, some people call me Gen, but that doesn't matter much. I grew up in the castle with you. We used to run rampant in these forests, even within the castle walls. I was the one with you when we found the potion. I wanted...my hope was that with the potion I could somehow know my father for once in my life. You already know that the guards figured out something was wrong. You told me to run, and I tried to talk you out of it, but you made me do it and I thought you were gone. I thought you were dead. No one would tell me anything. I wasn't allowed near the tower," she took a deep breath, breaking out of the fast paced babbling she had slipped into. The memories were still so pressing in her mind, she couldn't help it. "I decided that since I suddenly had these powers, I would use them to make up for the fact that I got a second chance at life. I've been policing the guards, helping the people as much as I can, but the king has put out an order to figure out who is doing all of this interfering. I still refuse to stop. The guards are monsters. Someone needs to protect the people."

message 60: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger The memories didn't come flooding in a swiftly as he thought it would. Nevertheless, a lot of it did make sense. That potion for one was a hoax from what he told. "I'm not sure if this was relayed to you after I was captured but that potion was never meant to make wishes come true. It was an experimental serum for an army. But a failed experiment to their knowledge. No one in the prison actually knows that I gained powers." Bastion then turned and faced Gen. "However, I had no idea you had any powers. What can you do?"

message 61: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen's hands were finally steady enough to start tending to his wounds. She moved from the fire to grab an old box of bandages and basic first aid supplies she had stolen from the infirmary in the castle. "Take off your shirt," she told him, pulling out a few bandages, and a bottle of alcohol that was used to disinfect wounds, as it was too strong and bitter to be stomach by even the most stubborn drunk. The light still wasn't enough, so she pulled out a few candles, looking to him. "Would you mind?" she asked, pulling her chair around to face him. "Powers wise, I can move things with my mind at will. No matter how heavy it would be to lift, as long as it isn't incredibly large or tied down, I can lift and move it without touching it. I also noticed that my reflexes got better. I can catch almost anything. Even if I knock something off a table, I can catch it before it hits the ground. I can also hover. I can't get more than a few feet off the ground, maybe twice my height. Then I don't know if this is just by chance, but I'm faster than I was before, but not super fast." She tried to explain, thinking it would be easier to just show him, but that the situation they were in at the moment wouldn't really allow it. "So is the fire thing all you can do?" she asked, thinking it was much more flashy than anything she could do. She poured some of the liquid on a bandage, gently trying to clean the cut on his head from their earlier collision, knowing from experience that the liquid hurt like hell, but was effective in stopping things from festering.

message 62: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion took off his shirt, allowing her to exam the cuts and bruises. 10 years worth of damage all seen in a single glance. He hoped that the sight was not too burdensome for her gentle eyes, but she carried herself as someone who has seen much worse. Didn't stop her from burning him like mad with the bandage on the forehead. He winced and hissed just a tad. Guess there are slightly worse things than being beaten half to death.

He lit my pointing finger and touched the several candles. "As for my own powers, I would rather show you. Hand me the coal picker by the fireplace."

message 63: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Bracing herself, Gen moved around to his back, her sharp intake of breath the only indication of the shock she felt. She slowly ran her fingers over the bruises, her eyes softening as she re-soaked the bandage in her hand, gently cleaning the wounds on his back, knowing how much it would hurt him. "Don't show me anything, let me get you bandaged up first," she told him, almost done disinfecting his wounds, the process causing some of them to bleed. She then began slowly wrapping his chest in bandages, her hands feather light against his skin. "And whatever you're about to do, please don't hurt yourself," she told him, reaching for the coal poker. She hadn't expected the handle to be hot already, but it seemed to be just as hot as the fire, burning her hand. She swore, the words seeming absurd coming out of her mouth. She grabbed her hand, the picker moving of it's own regard to him. "If you hurt yourself, I am not going to be happy."

message 64: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion took the coal poker. He held it in both hands as he slowly bent the metal portion. "I can withstand the heat among other this. But also..." He grabbed her hand slowly and they both vanished. Next place they appeared was a small creek behind the house. He glanced at the clear water next to him. "I'd think you'd be a bit happier if you soaked that burn."

message 65: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen was surprised as he touched the poker as though it were never in the fire. Even though it was warm, he still shouldn't have the strength to bend it, not like he was. She saw him reaching for her, and had to stop herself from pulling away, thinking his hands would still be hot, burning. She stumbled as their surroundings disappeared, catching herself before she fell into the creek. She took his advice though, adjusting her skirts around her and kneeling down to slip her hand into the water, the cool water soothing the burn. "I guess I got the short end of the stick on this one, though the vial did break right at your feet," she joked lightly, clenching and unclenching her fist to keep the mobility in it. She had made the mistake of keeping her hand in one place the last time she had been burned. It made moving your hand thereafter a real pain. "Thank you, though, this is a lot better."

message 66: by Joseph (last edited Apr 12, 2015 03:31PM) (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion knelled next to her. The sweet scent about her didn't seem to bother him as much as before. Reminded him of how things truly were before life took a dark turn. And as a child, he never thought too much of how a girl smelled. Honestly, he never really thought of her as a girl growing up. Just a really faithful friend. But to see someone as elegant as her made him feel a certain way. He couldn't place it really. "I still think you got the better end of the deal. A life with the freedom to come and go as you please." He patted her back before standing again. "And thanks for the trip down memory lane."

message 67: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) She looked over to him, immediately regretting her words. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that. I just don't think about things sometimes," she apologized about saying he got the better deal. "You can still have that life though, we can run away from this place, find a place far away where no one knows us. We could just forget everything and be friends again." She was hopeful, trying to find a way to make it up for him. "You aren't leaving, are you?" she asked as he thanked her. She hoped he wouldn't. She needed to make sure that he was okay, and she wasn't so sure at the moment.

message 68: by Joseph (last edited Apr 12, 2015 03:56PM) (new)

Joseph Ballenger He shook his head. "Of course not. I don't have to energy to travel." He rubbed his eyes a bit. The past few hours really did drain him. Then again, it's been years since he did much running around at all. Would be good to train up before going on his search, that's for sure. "Should take a few hours to rest up before going out again. Afterward, first order of difference is finding my mother."

message 69: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "We should go back then, get settled in for the night. You can have the bed. I've always been more comfortable on the couch," she said, standing up and removing her hand from the water, glancing down at the angry red mark on her hand and sighing. She would bandage it up when they got back, and find some excuse to tell her mother in the morning. "Bas, your mother hasn't lived in that house for at least two years. I don't know where she went, but I don't think she wants to be found. She publicly rebuked your father, and I don't know, but I think she fled town. She was in danger here."

message 70: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion sighed a light huff. Figured as much. If he went back to the house, he probably would find it bare. But that still didn't answer why the guards were protecting the place. And in the morning, he may not have the luxury to search the place either. "You know, we should actually go back to my mother's place to get your arrows. The guards may very well inform the other guards and perform an investigation of the place. Besides, my mother may have left some clue as to where she went. I need to do a good sweep of the place." He looked at her burnt hand. "If you bandage up real quick, we could make it there and back."

message 71: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen nodded at his suggestion. "Can you flash us back to the cabin, or do we have to walk?" she asked, still working her hand to keep her hand from losing any mobility. She was used to dealing with injuries, most of the time she had to do it herself, because going to the castle physician with cuts from a guards sword would raise to many suspicions, and probably get her beheaded. "We can also grab a lantern from the cabin so we have some light to look around the house. It isn't exactly well kept up." She suggested.

message 72: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion shook his head. "Oh ye of little faith. Here, hold on." He grabbed her hand and teleported them back into the back to the cabin. Once there, he noticed the lantern and saw it was low on oil. He looked around and found a canister. Pouring it into the latern, he looked back at Gen. "Is there anything to eat very quickly? I'm still a bit drained."

message 73: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) Gen laughed as he grabbed her again, ready to catch herself this time, instantly moving to the bandages, wrapping her hand with practiced ease. "There are a few rolls in the cabinet above you. They're from yesterday though, so they might be a tiny bit stale, but still more than edible if your hungry," Gen told him, clipping the bandage in place. She stood up, looking to him. "When we go through town, I can grab you some more, every one asleep, and no one is expecting a pretty little thief to stop by."

message 74: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion opened the cabinet above him and sure enough, there were rolls in a tied plastic bag. He grabbed the bag and took out several rolls, heated his hands and rolled them around between this palms. He blew on them and placed one out in front of Gen. "Here, nice and warm." He smiled as he looked at her bandaged hand. "And correction: they won't expect a slightly clumsy pretty thief."

message 75: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "I'm not clumsy," Gen grumbled, shooting him a look but taking the roll anyway, savoring the warmth of it. Without a partner in petty thievery, she almost never got to enjoy the treats she stole while they were still warm. She took a bit, smiling, debating if she should thank him, but deciding they had both had crucial parts in the food situation. "Anyway, at least I was never the one the bakery yelled at when we were running away. He always thought you were chasing me, not that we were in it together."

message 76: by Joseph (last edited Apr 12, 2015 05:28PM) (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion laughed, remembering the many times that had happened. She was always nimble on her feet back then. Well, guess that what happens since she had twigs for legs for years. He tossed his roll several times before taking a bite. "You always ran first, without warning might I add. You never gave me a signal, nod, nothing. If I reeked of bad breath, you could have told me instead of flying like a bat out of hell." He smiled just waiting for another one of her famous looks.

message 77: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "You never had bad breath, just a lack of attention to detail. Whenever I heard his footsteps I took off, you just never were fast enough to catch me," she teased back, finishing her roll with another few bites, then wiping her hand on her skirt. "I'm ready to go when you are, just don't zap me anywhere strange, or try to drop me in the middle of a river or something." She told him, giving him a level look that told him he would regret it if he tried. "Any way, stealing things is easier now, they just kind of walk their way out the door and into my hands. No one really notices randomly floating bread or meat."

message 78: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger "I see," Bastion said. "Don't worry about the zapping part. We have to walk majority of the way anyway." He finished his roll and clapped his hands several times to removes the crumbs. He walked to the door and looked back at her. A slight chuckle left his lips. "As for stealing, we could, I don't know, just appear in the store, grab them, and disappear right out. Just a thought."

message 79: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "Either way, the stealing has become much less difficult than it was when we were children," she admitted, moving over to the door with him. "Nothing will be fresh at this time of night though, it's all going to be leftover or stale." She hesitated at the door, turning back to grab her bow even though holding it would be a challenge now. She was still deadly with it. She stepped outside and picked up a few stones, tossing them in a pouch around her waist. "Not exactly arrows, but they'll still do the trick, need be. Just don't get in front of me," Gen warned him.

message 80: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) [Joseph?]

message 81: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger (I'm still here. Got very busy lately and dealing with a few health issues. I still want to continue)

"Staying in front is the least of my worries," Bastion replied. "Just don't leave me behind this time." He stepped out the way to allow her to lead. She knew the area much better considering he hasn't been around for many years. Things has changed so the layout of the town may differ from before. Not to mention, following her from behind could prove quite useful. He could see first hand the extent of her powers.

message 82: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) ((Okay, I hope you feel better.))

Gen shook her head at him, keeping her bow in her hands, her eyes sweeping the area as she set off. She would know immediately if guards were around. They were obvious, more accurately oblivious. They always carried torches, and rarely got off their horses in this part of the woods. "I won't leave you behind, but I also don't take leisurely strolls, so keep up," she warned him, throwing a grin over her shoulder at him. She set off quickly, used to the uneven terrain. It certainly wasn't a walk in the park, and running would be dangerous to someone who didn't know the lay of the land.

message 83: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger While running behind her, Bastion lit his hand and took glances below him. The dark surroundings were not helping with this jog through the woods. And since he hands worked well as natural torches, the jog should become just a tad easier to deal with. And by how swiftly Gen was maneuvering through the tight spots and narrow ways, it was clear this wasn't her first walk-through. "You must get quite the workout doing this, huh?"

message 84: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "A workout? Hardly, this is nothing. You should try scaling castle walls and jumping over roofs. That's a workout. Running from guards on horses also kind of gets your heart going," she admitted, not even winded, thinking she should tell him to put out the fire, as it would immediately alert anyone around them to their presence, but she believed they were safe, at least for the moment, once they got out of the forest she would tell him to put it out. "Just because one of us is out of shape, doesn't mean we both are."

message 85: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger He frowned upon the last comment. Not his fault he was trapped within a prison. But seeing as his powers came later in the years, maybe if he escaped much earlier he would keep up a bit better. There didn't seem to be any guards present, which was good. This time of night may well be a down time for them. "Why aren't there any guards around this area? There used to be plenty when we were younger."

message 86: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "This area has mostly been abandoned. Only a family or tow lives out here, so the guards don't ever come out. There are plenty of abandoned estates over that hill. People with the resources to escape the prince all up and left before he could force them to stay," Gen told him, turning suddenly up a steep hill, turning back to make sure he could get his footing. The path they were looking for was about halfway up the hill, where it evened out slightly. "Plus the king is too busy making sure no drunk is saying a word against him. You have to be careful around here, if you say one wrong word, people will turn you in, and the king has more "executioners than the princess has ladies.

message 87: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Ballenger Bastion shook his head. So much has clearly changed within the land. And to think all of the changes due to the new king. So many people have deserted this area and yet, if he remembered correctly, Gen was fairly well off too. Why didn't she go along and leave town with them? "And I take it you don't want to abandon the kingdom for a rather personal reason? You could have left this place long ago."

message 88: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) "Trust me when I say I would have abandoned this place long ago if I could have, but just after you disappeared, I was matched up with the love little king we have now. My mother and the king negotiated the terms of my betrothal to the little bastard. If I run away now, he'll undoubtedly kill my mother, and I'm not risking that," Gen admitted, her tone bitter, her eyes tightening into a glare as she stood up slightly straighter. "If he tries to make this marriage real I will tell him exactly where he can shove it."

message 89: by Megan (new)

Megan (nightrunner) ((Joseph?))
