“Not at all. She was horrible to me. She would hurt me.” She felt a sharp pain in her arm and grabbed it.

“Woah, are you okay?” Anjali asked, looking concerned.

“I- I’m fine. Kinda.” The pain in her arm burned. She gripped it tightly, even though that wouldn’t do anything.

“What’s causing you pain?” She asked, hoping to be able to help.

“Memory.” She pulled her sleeve up to reveal a red scar, which was running along her arm, starting at her wrist and ending at her mid arm.

Anjali didn’t know what the appropriate reaction was as she looked at the scar. “I’m so sorry.” She said, since she probably triggered the memory.

“It’s ok. It’s not your fault.” She said, her head replaying the sound of her aunt yelling and screaming at her.

Anjali saw her visible distress. “Focus on something that can ground you to block out the memories.” She said, hoping it would help Ja’naya.

Ja’naya thought of her mother. The opposite of her aunt. Sweet, kind, caring, loving. She sighed, “thank you.”

Anjali smiled back. She pulled her bracelet off her right wrist so she could fidget with it in her left hand.

“Oh, it was from my grandmother.” Anjali said, looking down at the bracelet.
