2024 May Pick-It-For-Me Challenge

Pickees
✳️ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✳️ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✳️ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✳️ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✳️ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A few hints to help with book selection:
✳️ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✳️ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✳️ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✳️ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✳️ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✳️ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.
If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✳️ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Thank you!!
(You do not need to include a preferred shelf if you would like to use your tbr shelf.)

Picks will be posted by 7am (US ET) April 26
Please pick for the person below you in your group. The last person in the group will pick for the first person. For example: Darcy picks for TL and HeatherMarie picks for Darcy.

For those who don't know this, I live in central Indiana and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana... Home of the famous Indianapolis 500 Race. Car racing is a big part of our culture here in Indiana, especially in and around Speedway, Indiana which is where the track resides. I personally am not a huge race fan outside of our "humble little race" but I love everything about the Indy 500 - the history, the pageantry, the speed of the cars...
But I won't belabor you with the details around this particular race. Instead I thought we could look at the most prestigious auto races around the world (according to Motorsport Network). No, Indy isn't #1 (spoiler, it's #2), but I don't begrudge the race that comes in #1 - it's a spectacular event as well.
So, as the famous line goes "Gentlemen (and Ladies for us), Start Your Engines!"

8.) 24 Hours of Nurburgring (First Held - 1970)
The Nurburgring is a massive, 15.5 mile circuit, nestled in the hills of Germany. You have to be somewhat mad to race here, and even crazier to partake in 24 hour event with over 200 cars. Not to mention, '"The Green Hell," as some like to call it, has claimed dozens of lives and is considered by many the most lethal race track in the world. It is a stunning race nonetheless; the ultimate test of man and machine. When it comes to GT-only events, nothing comes close to 24 hours at the track many sanctioning bodies proclaim is too dangerous to race at.

7.) Pikes Peak Hill Climb (First Held - 1916)
'The Race to the Clouds' is the king of all hill climbs. Pikes Peak ranks as one of the most challenging motorsport events in the world with its 12 mile course that runs up the side of a mountain. Each driver must master over 150 corners as they wheel their machines up towards the summit as fast as humanly possible. It takes an incredible amount of focus, tenacity, and sheer guts to conquer this event where just one mishap could send you tumbling off a cliff. There's a reason why they call it 'The Devil's playground.'

6.) Dakar Rally (First Held - 1979)
The Dakar Rally is a race that puts a whole new spin on the phrase, 'to finish first, you must first finish.' We aren't just talking about vehicles not surviving this rally; we're talking about people. Almost every year, there is someone who doesn't make it out alive. When it comes to rally racing, no race is as brutal and vicious. Baja is close, but not quite at the level that Dakar is. Drivers will find themselves stranded for days after mechanical failures with some resorting to burning their cars in a desperate attempt to signal for help.

5.) Bathurst 1000 (First Held - 1960)
The Bathurst 1000 is a V8 Supercar race held annually on a Mount Panorama. Yes, a mountain. You know it has to be a savage circuit when the first turn is nicknamed 'Hell Corner.' V8 Supercar racing is wild to begin with and when they hit the track for the Bathurst 1000, it's always a captivating show. It's a highly competitive event that has come down to a last lap duel for three consecutive years now. Every Australian racer dreams of winning Bathurst and the daunting event attracts international attention with stars from all disciplines flocking to Australia for a chance to compete.

4.) Daytona 500 (First Held -1959)
The Daytona 500 is the pinnacle of stock car racing and in North America, only the Indy 500 rivals it in popularity. It is the opening round of NASCAR's grueling season and has produced some of the most spectacular moments in the sport's 65 year history. Few tracks came close in size when it was originally built, and it's located in the birthplace of NASCAR ... Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1979, 'NASCAR's Superbowl' became the first race ever broadcasted live from green flag to checkered flag. The finish was nothing short of incredible, and the event drew ratings that were though the roof. That 1979 edition of this race rocketed NASCAR into the national spotlight and helped make it the multi-million dollar sport it is today. This is also the race where Dale Earnhardt, arguably the greatest stock car racer who ever lived, lost his life in a last lap crash in 2001.

3.) Monaco Grand Prix (First Held -1929)
Formula One is hands down, the most popular form of auto racing in the world. The Monaco GP has been held since 1929 though, two decades before F1 even existed. The race tests a driver more than any other on the calendar today. It's an incredibly tight, narrow circuit, with run-off areas far and few between. A mistake almost certainly spells the end of your day here. This street course has a plethora of twists and severe elevation changes. There is even a point on the track where the drivers must race through a tunnel. If it wasn't already on the F1 schedule, it wouldn't be allowed due to safety reasons. It is the ultimate test of an F1 driver and their ability. It's the one race where you don't necessarily need the best car when you have the best driver. Drivers can go their entire careers without attaining a World Championship but can still hold their head high knowing that they won Monaco.

2.) Indianapolis 500 (First Held - 1911)
The granddaddy of them all...it was an incontrovertible fact for half a century that no race in the world could hold a candle to the sacred grounds of the Brickyard. Although American open wheel racing popularity has been on the decline for a couple decades now, this race still holds great prominence in the motorsports world. It's history is fascinating, the races are breathtaking, and the drivers come from every corner of the globe for a chance to put their face on the trophy. At Indy, 33 cars bolt around a 2.5 mile circuit at speeds approaching 230 mph for 500 miles straight. It takes a lot nerve to compete here and there are some drivers, such as Mike Conway, who refuse to take part. A crash at Indy is almost always big, and if you haven't hit the wall yet, there's a good chance that you will. It is the race that preceded all others and to this day, is the one everyone wants to win.

1.) 24 Hours of Le Mans (First Held - 1923)
The lore surrounding Le Mans can't simply be explained in a handful of sentences. In fact, there probably aren't any words that can do it justice. Nearly every major race in the world has been modernized. It's been turned into a controlled, relatively safe environment. Le Mans has escaped that though. It can not be tamed. Control is not a word you associate with this event. What other race do you see drivers working tirelessly on their cars on the side of the track after a wreck? What other race can a car crash in the dead of the night and vanish for hours before being found? When you take the green flag at Le Mans, you are racing away from civilization and into the unknown, with a race car being your only salvation as you battle around a circuit 8.5 miles in length. The prototypes are a way for manufacturers to display the most advanced racing technology in the world and Le Mans is the proving ground. This is, in my honest opinion (not LaurLa), the most prestigious race in the world.

Well, they did and so I am posting sign-ups a little early this month and therefore will also close them a day early as well so I can go be with my son on April 26th as he walks across the stage for his college degree.
Hope you all will forgive me the date flexibility😊.
Having said that, if someone does come in a little late, I will make every accommodation to try and make sure they get picks this month.
As a reminder, since sometimes they get a little buried in the first post:

Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

Thanks! I am excited for him :-) He's already got a job and I am so thankful for that. It mean him moving farther away but also a good excuse for us visit the area (Lexington, KY)!

That isn't terribly far! Drivable at least. And any excuse to get out and travel some is always good in my book!
My youngest moved from SoCal to southern Georgia a few years ago when his wife finished her PhD and got a teaching position at the university. It does get me to the east coast where I have more family pretty regularly, so they are happy about that! The hard part is only seeing them a few times a year rather than more regularly.

TBR = To Be Read
So basically your 'to-read' shelf. 😊 And the app can be confusing, I find it easier to use the browser on my phone or device rather than the app for doing more involved things.

For our newbies...
I highly encourage you to read the first and second posts (if you haven't or even again) before we switch to picking recommendations. You might also want to look at the April thread so get an idea how it works https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Do you want to use your to read shelf or do you have another? 😜

Not to late!

Picks are due by midnight US ET on April 29.

To Read ASAP: Always Be My Banshee (Mystic Bayou #4)"
Hi Vivi - I'm sure this is a great pick for MountainKat, but per the challenge instructions HERE, you should pick at least 4 new books and 4 books from MKat's chosen shelf.
I realize as a newbie, it's a lot to process, but if you see how others have made selections, it might help you understand better. A lot of pickers choose a new and a preferred shelf book for each 'Picking Rule', but you are only required to do 4 of each.
Hope this helps and please feel free to message me if you have questions!

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations.
PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✳️The books picked for you are not yet released.
✳️If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✳️If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
