That's interesting- I've never met anyone who belonged to a Mennonite or Amish community. Oh haha, I only wear my hair loose 😄 It's hard to catch me with my hair up.

Haha, that's happened to me pretty frequently, unfortunately. My memory isn't great when it comes to remembering specifics, so I've started to try and take notes on things that stick out to me during sermons.

I want to point out that men making more rational decisions than women is not always the case. Unfortunately, I know many, many instances in which a man thinks that he's making the better, more rational decision, but he most certainly is not (in my opinion), and he won't listen to his wife because he's the "man."

Also, just because wives are supposed to submit to their husbands does not mean that they are greater or better than women in any way. Christ submits to the Father and yet is equal to Him.

Sorry, just had to point that out, haha.

Elisabeth (Bets) (livingforjesus) | 1194 comments @Catherine, yeah I agree. Our pastor just had a sermon on Father’s Day where he was talking to the married men in church and he said even tho men are the leaders and wives are supposed to submit, you can’t just run over them. And he said that in Ephesians where it says that wives are supposed to submit to their husbands it also says husbands are supposed to love their wives as Christ loved the church. There has to be mutual love and submission

BooksNCrannies (booksncranniesofficial) | 552 comments Wow!!! Lots to read here! I didn't see the painting cuz I'm using the app (so I don't think I want to after reading how disgusting it is). I will say though that Trump is definitely the better of the two candidates and I would definitely choose him over Biden. Biden supports abortion, LGBTQ+, other radical agendas, and struggles to even speak sometimes. On the other hand Trump doesn't support abortion and LGBTQ+. Politics can be a very divisive subject; I'm not trying to divide here or start an argument: only pointing out why I would support Trump. But certainly none of these men are the answer to America's problems. As the Bible says government isn't what will save society — only God can. So we shouldn't be looking to any man (or woman) to save America from destruction, if you will. And while, voting is a right we should use to elect upright leaders to office, that's not what we should put our hope in. I think it's the Psalms that say something to the effect of "Trust not in princes or the arm of man for they will fail" (sorry if I misquoted). I think we need to come to the realization that America is under judgement from God; I mean think of all the perverse sins that have become "normal" today — abortion (or murder), homosexuality, pedophilia (some groups are trying to do away with the laws that make this a crime), and the list could go on. And these sins are so sickening to us... how much more so to a holy and righteous God? Every great civilization in the past (Rome, Greece, ect.) exhibited these same sins in their latter years — and what happened to them all? They all were either destroyed, plundered, or taken over by another nation. As demonstrated many times over, history repeats itself. America is now exhibiting the very same symptoms of Godlessness and rebellion that the other great civilizations of society did before they fell. Yes, God is slow to anger and is merciful but He can't let sin go unpunished. America is headed down a very dark path (and so is the rest of the world for that matter). But this should be no surprise to Christians because the Bible says that in the last days there will be violence and all the sins that I've mentioned — it will be just as in the days of Noah.... Ok. Sorry to be rambling but what I just wanted to bring out is that man isn't the answer, we need to be wrestling with God in prayer that He would be merciful and long-suffering. I'll end it here. I hope what I said is coherent. :-)

Elisabeth (Bets) (livingforjesus) | 1194 comments I love it Caleb!

And yeah, like I said, of the two candidates Trump is the one I’d vote for.

Catherine (semi active) | 273 comments @Bets Amen to that. Very true; I'm glad your pastor talked about that.

@Alana For some reason it says the video is unavailable. Does that show up for anyone else?

@BooksNCrannies Oh, I didn't know your name was Caleb! That's a good name- is it alright if I call you Caleb instead of BooksNCrannies? XD

Haha, you're not missing out on anything by not seeing the picture XD Hm, personally, I'm very torn over Trump/Biden.

Very true! Those are such great points. I consider myself fairly patriotic, despite America's shortcomings, so reading that does make me quite sad :( I can't argue with any of that, though.

What you said was very coherent! Thank goodness that God is the one who is in control ❤

✧Bella✧ | 1121 comments Well, I haven't been on this thread in a while lol

Yes, let's call that painting rubbish.

As for women pastors, my opinion is I'm good with it. I believe God calls both men and women to be pastors. (Although, ahem, not all pastors SHOULD be pastors). But, yeah, if I have a problem with someone being a pastor, it will have nothing to do with their gender.

Catherine (semi active) | 273 comments @Bella Agreed about the rubbish!

That's true, not all pastors should be pastors...what do you think about 1 Timothy 2:11-12 ("A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.")?

@Caleb Okay cool! Caleb is a lot shorter than BooksNCrannies, haha. Makes sense!

message 69: by ✧Bella✧ (last edited Jun 25, 2024 07:01AM) (new)

✧Bella✧ | 1121 comments @Catherine--I'll have to think about that one. I always thought maybe it was just because of their culture at the time.

Maybe I should do some research. (There's actually a book I'm planning on reading about that sort of thing, I'll have to see what I think of its arguments. And still do my own research of course).

But I feel that God does call some women to preach. And I don't think women should just submit to men and be silent. I don't think God really wants that. Because that's sexist.

message 70: by BooksNCrannies, Co-creator/Head Mod (new)

BooksNCrannies (booksncranniesofficial) | 552 comments @Bella, you're right. Women don't need to be silent or submit to men in the context of just everyday life. There are certain contexts, however, where God does command women to submit to men, most notably in the created order of marriage — the wife is to submit to her husband. God is definitely not sexist in setting this created order but rather assigning different roles to both genders. The New Testament teaches about men's and women's roles in both the home and the church. Ephesians 5:23 says: "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body." This verse confirms that husbands are indeed heads over their wives. Does the Bible teach female inferiority? Absolutely not! God is just giving certain roles to men and women. The same with roles in the church. Consider these verses: "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach" (1 Timothy 3:2; emphasis mine); and "Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well" (1 Timothy 3:12; emphasis mine). From these verses we can see that those (bishops [or pastors] and deacons) who expound or preach the Word to God's people are to be men, the husband of one wife. Some may reply that this phrasing can include women a well. This can't be the case, however, if one is applying good exegesis. Nor are these verses restricted by the time period in which they were written. The commands of the Bible aren't limited by their time period and still apply to this day. But if this were true (that the commands of God were restricted by time period), why can't we ignore other commands that "seem" outdated today, like not participating in homosexuality? The Holy Spirit inspired the apostles to record these commands — God could certainly foresee the future but nonetheless included this exhortation to His people. The Bible makes it quite clear that men are to preach the Word, not women. And again this isn't sexist or unfair to women but rather a reiteration and reinforcement of the created order of the two genders. Women have their own gifts and talents that they can use in the church....

Well, enough of my talking. Please understand that I say all these things in love and respect. Fellow believers should be able to discuss these things in a kind and loving manner and to share biblical insights with one another. I hope what I've said will challenge you to always search God's Word for the answer to these important questions.

I'm including some links for you, Bella, that I encourage you to read.

Here's a link to a PDF that I strongly encourage you to read. It is written by a former feminist who is now a Christian; in this article she addresses the issue of women preaching in the church from a biblical worldview and talks about her own struggles with Paul's seemingly restrictive attitude toward women. It will answer many of your questions about this topic a lot better than I could. The link's below. 👇🏼

Like I said, I need to do more research, but I firmly believe that it is fine for women to preach if that's what they're called to do, and I believe that you can be both a feminist and a Christian although I don't agree 100% with some secular feminists.

BooksNCrannies (booksncranniesofficial) | 552 comments @Elisabeth, it seems that over the years our family has taken the same position. My dad was the first to decide not to vote many years ago just because of the implications voting entails along with not wanting to participate in a government that's gotten to be more godless. Especially recently our family is stepping away from voting. That is why I haven't registered to vote even tho I legally can. I know people have many reasons for voting and that's fine but in the end government can't be the answer to everything. So, yeah, it's not wrong to vote but we as a family have come to the conclusion that's it's best if we don't for many reasons.

I believe voting is one of the ways of having a voice, especially when there are candidates with such opposing views/records, such as saving babies vs killing babies. I pray for the USA and pray people stand up and speak up.
