Hannah | 3326 comments When Madeleine falls in love with Giles whilst she is studying at the Sorbonne, she becomes pregnant and they decide to get married. They continue to live happily in France until the outbreak of the war, when Madeleine moves with their son Olivier to England, and Giles remains in France, joining the resistance. After the death of their son, Madeleine joins the war effort and is sent to France, where she hopes to find her husband alive and get revenge for the death of her son. I really liked in this novel how we saw the extent to which ordinary citizens tried to resist the Nazis, even in small ways, and we also got to see a bit more of the training that SOE agents would have undertaken. There was a sub-plot to this book that I knew little about and I would like to read more about in the future. This was a fast-paced plot-driven book, and the characters were all relatable. I liked the description of the setting and whilst the ending felt a little rushed, Bowen is definitely one of my favourite authors.
