Drace (dracenines) | 7372 comments So recently a number of Alternate Cover Edition paperbacks of classic noir novels by Raymond Chandler were published but have not yet been added to Goodreads. I'm working on typing up a thread to get ACEs created and the ISBNs moved over to the ACEs. However, I've noticed an issue with conflicting dates across all of these ACEs:

- The publisher website lists a date in the 1980s. Since in my experience publisher websites almost never update the date when they give a book a new cover/description but keep the same ISBN, I assume that this is when an older cover edition of these books were published.

- The copyright page of the book lists a date in 1992. As far as I can tell, this is when the previous edition of the book was published. Pretty straightforward, but...

- These new ACEs were not published in the 80s or the 90s. They were published in 2023, and even if the publisher website doesn't say that, the Goodreads bot auto-created new ACEs for the Kindle ACE editions that list 2023 as the publication date. 2023 is not listed on the Amazon page, so I would assume that the bot picked up on the publisher making changes on Amazon in 2023 when these ACEs came out and created a new page for it.

So, discounting the Kindle editions for now, how should these new paperback ACEs be dated? Do they get the 1980s date (I think this is the least likely candidate for the proper date, if I'm being honest), the 1992 date, or the 2023 date?

Dobby (dobby0390) | 7857 comments ACEs are given the publication date of the month and year they are created, unless the actual publication month and year are known. In the case you cited, the month and year of the ACE's creation is correct (2023).

Thanks for the clarification. I might try to reach out to the publisher to ask when these new ACEs were put into publication to see if I can get a more specific date, but I'm guessing that month/year might be as far as we can get with it.
