Marti I don't know about mystery, but if you want to recommend a book to someone who is 12 years old to start reading, "Maze Runner" were the first books I read at that age. The author is horrible, but I always really liked the books. I recommend.

Vítor Monteiro | 70 comments Plenty of good suggestions. I'd suggest the "Alfred Hitchcock and The Three Investigators" collection, especially "Alfred Hitchcock and The Three Investigators in The Mystery of the Coughing Dragon", if you can find those old books.
