Mike's Bookshelf | 29 comments 3-5. Any more than that is heinous. The only exceptions are Land of Stories and KOTLC

Mike's Bookshelf | 29 comments I'm willing to read over that though if all the books are really good.

Neil Tostevin | 1 comments I’ve always loved Karin Slaughter and her main series is up to 15-16 books now. As much as I love the books and the characters I am starting to feel like it should end, like surely these guys deserve a happy ever after?
I guess the big question for her is how to end it. I’ll keep reading them as they’re released though!

Diane (drl451) | 6 comments I think it depends on how the series develops, and what the premise is. If it is a detective story series, then it could go on indefinitely since there are always new crimes to solve. If just about the life and times of a particular character or characters, then perhaps the stand alone format is better to avoid the story becoming dull and boring.

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments It does depends, preferably 3-5 books but I think if you are going to have more than that at least do not make them so lengthy. I love to read but sometimes picking up a book series that each are 700 pages or more can be quite overwhelming and intimidating. Don't get me wrong I don't mind reading a nice long book however, why not break down some of it down. I'd rather read a series that has 10 books that are at average 300 pages than 5 books that are 600- 800 pages long.
A series that has more than 3 books and each are over 700 pages long gives me the impression the Author and/or Publisher is saying "cram as much as you can or you will lose your audience/fans." Sometimes they lengthy books will work but some let's be honest there is so much going on, so many POV's that are added that it can pull a reader out of the story. You want to keep your audience wanting more not be exhausted and needing that year in between books to rest and take the chance of losing interest. Plus if they are shorter than maybe you can release them closer together. At least this is my opinion.

I agree but even with Detective stories sometimes if you go on pass 10 books for example the stories can become repetitive or stagnate all off course depending on the author's writing style.

Eli | 71 comments 2-5 for me. I’ve had to read some really long book series before and thats personally fine, but it needs to keep me hooked really well..

Catherine Rivera | 51 comments I agree with the comment that it will depend on how well the story develops. I have been reading a couple of series that have over 20 books in the series and I still love reading each book when it comes out. They don't come out every few months so it helps with the anticipation and build up. The characters remain the same for the most part but a new adventure/murder occurs.

Lesa McAuliff | 12 comments Less than 10.

Ginnie | 10 comments 3. Maybe 4 if books are short

message 77: by Vítor (new)

Vítor Monteiro | 70 comments It can really be any number. Technically Agatha Christie made a whole series of books with Poirot and one with Miss Marple, but they're technically individual novels who happen to have the same characters.
Many old timey fictional "series" that didn't advertise them as such could last over 10-20 books. With enough breathing room you could even keep it going till world's end (like Nancy Drew and "rebooted" Famous Five stuff).
We have to remember that in the end, all books (series or no series) just become a tome you find on its own. Any book can be someone's 1st and you may read that one and that be the 1st and last in the series you ever will read. We do not have to binge through everything in anything.
