One of the Cosmere content creators I follow on instagram asked an interesting question on one of their posts… it includes Oathbringer Spoilers kind of so be warned…

The question is, who is/was worse? Dalinar or Taravangian?

I have some very pointed thoughts on this topic and am super interested to hear what you all think. There’s a pretty solid discussion happening in the comments of the creators post so hopefully we spark some good dialogue!

Taravangian is 100% and without a doubt worse than Dalinar.

Dalinar was a warlord, conqueror, and a tyrant, but while his crimes and the pain he caused to numerous people were his own, you must note that he was a result of his war centered culture. People congratulated him on his actions, he was taught to be like this from childhood and was praised for these actions by his brother and all his people.
The only person to truly show Dalinar the ugliness of what he did was the wife he loved dearly, and losing her due to his own actions made him change and become a better man.
Here is my point, Dalinar changed, he became probably the most honorable man on the world, and the embodiment of Radiant ideals. Dalinar of today is one of the greatest men alive on Roshar.

While Dalinar follows journey before destination, Travangian is the most terrible example of ends justify the means and at least he could have had some saving traits but NO.
He's self centered and egotistical to the point of delusion(only I can save the world), he's selfish beyond imagine (literally bargained to destroy the world for saving his little city), and for the sake of his stupid, extremely unreliable "diagram" that's so flawed that it practically worthless, he committed atrocities that is even worst than what Dalinar committed back in his days, too egotistical even to consider that the whole thing is just garbage, and then he literally became Odium and is about to cause more pain and destruction.
So yeah. Taravangian is a true villain in my opinion with no way to redemption.
Dalinar already redeemed himself.

gabby | 5 comments No because why's that even a question😭 Dalinar did some terrible things and def needs to work on redeeming himself but Taravangian was so willing to sacrifice the entire world for one city?? Taravangian is much worse and I will die on that hill.

Robert terry | 2 comments Taravangian he knew was he doing and had the motto the ends justified the means. Taravangian is basically the same as a Hitler, He didn’t care about who he hurt, as long as he got what he wanted in the end. Dalinar was caught up in the moment because of the Trill and was greatly effective and went into a big spiral because of his actions. .

Anya Neusiis | 11 comments Based on their interactions with Odium, I think Taravangian is worse. Both did horrible things and killed many people heartlessly. Both did so of their own will (yes Dalinar was possessed by the Thrill at the time, but he also states in OB that it was still his choice to burn and kill). But Dalinar was willing to change his ways, and Taravangian doubled down. Dalinar felt remorse, Taravangian didn't.
