This year it is Before Lunch (which is also in the Book Pool)

But I'm Thirkelled out. I did have a volunteer to lead the read in June, but she has left the group.

Would anyone else be interested in leading the read? I can help you set up the threads if you have never lead a read before. :)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments I would definitely need help setting up threads, as I’ve never lead a read before , and am an absolute Luddite, but I would lead - I planned on rereading it for the book pool, anyway! I last read it in 2012, I think, didn’t even write reviews back then, so I don’t remember anything, I’m afraid!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I didn't want to lead without reading as I may want to go back to Thirkell in a year or two.

I'll talk to you nearer the time!

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments You bet! And fear not, there will come a day when you’ll be in a committee meeting or family get-together, and something silly and trivial will happen and you’ll think of a similar scene in a Thirkell book, and want to get back to Barsetshire for a visit! ;o) ( you’ll be cackling to yourself, everyone will look at you oddly, you won’t be able to explain unless they are Thirkellites…in which case, why are you hanging around these people?!😉😂)

I just checked the Pool, I only see Cheerfulness Breaks In by Angela Thirkell. I’m still happy to read and lead Before Lunch, because I read Cheerfulness for the pool in 2023, and this title comes next; but I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing a title in the list, thanks!

I guess Cheerfulness Breaks In has been in the pool two years in a row! I think I nominated and read it last year - I found several books in the pool I read just last year.

Yes I got it wrong - Before Lunch is the group read
Cheerfulness Breaks In is from the pool.

There is another book that has been in the pool two years running I think. If we do the pool next year I might make those two ineligible.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments Ok, thanks for clarifying! Yes, I’m not sure why there are so many repeats from last year for me personally-I can’t remember if they were in the pool, or if GR friends recommended them in reviews and I read them…I know the Dean Street Press reissues have been prominent favorites!

Jackie | 639 comments THANK YOU so much for volunteering to be the lead on Before Lunch Susan! I'm really looking forward to it and will likely start it mid-May.

sadly, I'm that way with Heyer's romances so I really need to stop trying for now. Let some time go by!

Same here! (On Heyer’s romances, not Thirkell). But I totally get it, sometimes you need a break from one type of book/author, we’ve all been there!

You bet! I’m looking forward to it as well, there is no audiobook that I can find, so I’ll probably start in May as well - I find I’m slower without an audiobook to keep pace!

message 12: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 639 comments oh, that's interesting, I have found that I like audio books to slow me down so I can savor a book.

My reading pace has slowed considerably even since I have been on Goodreads.

With GH - I still love her books but I don't really have anything more to say about them. The good ones speak for themselves & the bad ones I'm not intending to read again.

Hi Everyone

Susan has a busy few days at the start of the month, so we have pushed back this group read a couple of days till the 8th. :)

Jackie | 639 comments I keep meaning to ask, how is Thirkell pronounced?

message 18: by Old Scot (last edited Jun 01, 2024 03:10AM) (new)

Old Scot | 4 comments Before Lunch is on FadedPage.com as a free download, as it's out of copyright. Many of Thirkell's books are there.
Such are the limits of technology, I can't start it at the moment because my Kindle has died!

I am currently making a spirited attempt to finish Cheerfulness Breaks In before Nov 30th as my final Book Pool Read and again I'd like to settle the question of how to pronounce Thirkell.

googling leads me to believe it's thirKELL if you are British? but since I am not I'm still not sure.

& I guess this is as good a time as any to ask if anyone would like to lead our annual Thirkell read in June or JulyI believe the next one is Northbridge Rectory?

I never really vibed with thisw series & I don't think I'll go back to it.

message 21: by Susan in NC (new)

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments I will, if you’ll set up the threads (I haven’t a clue…) I thought Northbridge Rectory was one of her best wartime books, so I look forward to revisiting it, it’s been a while since I read it.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 2069 comments July is fine - it’s a funny one, I think, so a good beach/plane read!
