I am not a Zoya fan, even though I have read beyond S&B. And while I will not argue that Nikolai deserves his place in the winners' circle, I think Mal was more noble in his treatment of Alina. I did not appreciate how Nikolai used her.

@Catherine, people hate on Mal because they see him as oppressive. Instead of seeing him the way Bardugo presents him, they read between the lines and see something that isn't there: him holding her back from her true potential. In actuality, he sees what is happening to her, and knows it isn't good. He tries to get her to see, and instead of people appreciating him for his self-sacrificial decisions, they malign him for not letting her go without a fight.

Personally, I don't like Mal, but that's because I saw him as slightly annoying (especially in book 3), and with the show, I only saw him as "nice" and nothing more.

@Catherine-- KoS is really good, but a certain character's chapters made me super angry. Still a great series, though.

@Sharon-- I do get what you're saying about Nikolai, but the thing is, there was never really love on either side. And she kind of wanted to use him to try and forget Mal, remember? He did annoy me when he kissed her that one time, though. But he's great, so I can forgive him. ;)

If you mean do I love Matthias and Nikolai, then the answer is yes, they're both great characters imo. If you're asking if they're a ship, the answer is no. That wouldn't make ANY sense as they literally never even met each other. Or did they? I've read a lot of books between CK and now. But anyway, no the nik comes from Zenik, as in Nina Zenik

If you leave Zoya alone for a bit that would be appreciated. :)

I personally don't like Mal from the books because it seemed like he ignored Alina until she became "beautiful" due to exercising her Grisha powers. Only once did she become powerful and had everyone noticing her did he finally notice her.

I can see that, but I think Bardugo did a good job of fleshing out their complicated relationship and helping us (me, anyway) understand why Mal took so long. (view spoiler)[He was attracted to her, but didn't want to lose their friendship, so turned off those feelings, if I remember right. And one of my favorite lines is him telling her he was sorry for not "seeing" her before but that he "sees" her now. Then he stays committed to her despite not wanting to go back. (hide spoiler)] I liked him much more than any of the other options!🙃 He could have had better morals, but so could all of them.🤭
