📝 Review: First cosy mystery I really enjoyed.
This murder mystery was charming, fun and exciting. A very intelligent, but spoiled and shallow military daughter is left at the altar and soon after receives an inheritance that will keep her in a small town up north in America. She gets the house, bakery and a dog. It was lovely to see her change, make meaningful relationships, work hard to keep her great aunt legacy and grown into an independent and self-assured woman. The mystery kept me guessing. I loved the dog and Madison, she was adorably incompetent in the begging but a completely different person at the end.
The narration was amazing, great interpretation, and I could follow the story easily.

Week #9
Book: Unexpected Mate
Date Read: 05/31/24
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Review: This is my third read of this book. It's like an accident you can't look away from and as such it's earned an extra star. Brian is kicked out of his pack for being gay and his fated mate, Marcus, thinks he's straight. Marcus's most recent ex is not happy about his new mate and tries to make problems but luckily, she's not successful. If you can look past all the typos and grammatical errors, it's a good a decent story.

Julie | 858 comments WEEK 9 COMPLETION POST - 9. Small town: Read a book set in a small town

The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker The Simple Wild
Page Count: 402 Kindle Edition
Date Completed: 2 June
Rating/Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️When Calla finds out her estranged father has cancer she flies to the Alaskan wildness to see him. She soon finds out how different life is the Alaskan wild and unwittingly history might just repeat itself when a city girl falls in love with a wild man.
The Simple Wild is beautifully written, moving story of regret and hope, of choosing love and being true to yourself. The characters are all engaging. At times I wanted to strangle them, especially Calla with her selfish immaturity, however I love how they each grow throughout the book.
Fav Quote:
“I don’t agree with the choices Wren made where you’re concerned, but I know it was never a matter of him not caring about you. And if you want to blame people for not trying, there’s plenty of it to go around.” Agnes turns to smile at me then. “Or you could focus on the here-and-now, and not on what you can’t change.”

Week: 8
Book: Freeing Luka
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Although not as good as the first in the series, this was still a pretty fun read. The leads were likeable enough and the growly, possessive alien hasn't gotten old yet -- we'll see in a few books. It moved the overarching story along and apparently there's an bigger baddie to be found still. We are introduced to some of the women who will be in future books and continue the story line. I've found the background story in this series to be interesting enough to continue.

Week: 9
Book: Wild Love
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review: Elsie Silver tells a good tale -- her characters are relatable and have conversations that I could see myself having. I loved the MMC and his willingness to step up for a daughter he didn't know when she needed him. Unfortunately I got a little cringe from the FMC -- she just seems to be trying tooooo hard to be "chaotic" and instead just came off as silly and immature. Also, the boyfriend at home thing went on way too long. But you know I'll be back for West in the next book in the series.

Book: Wolfhunter River
Author: Rachel Caine

Qualification: Swedish cover has a car on the cover.
Blodsband (Stillhouse Lake, #3) by Rachel Caine
Review:
Once again, this series did not disappoint. As the third book in the series, the intenseness of the storyline ramps up - which I didn't know if I thought was possible after the action in the last one.

One thing I truly enjoyed about this book is that it has to be read in order of the series because Wolfhunter River picks up exactly where the last one left off. Due to a phone call from a stranger, Gwen is off on another adventure and this poor family has quite literally been through the ringer. What I have loved about this series is that as a reader, I never can tell who the bad guy is and it always takes me for a loop - which is nice after spending time reading novels where it's easy to predict.

This gives me faith for the rest of the series since it has all been so good so far.

Option 1
12. Glasses / gloves / hat / bag / phone / watch
Read a book with one of these items on the cover.

Sunglasses will count as 'glasses'. Winter gear such as mittens and beanies will work for 'gloves' and 'hat'. 'Bag' will also cover luggage/backpacks.

A clock will NOT work for watch. The items need to be things that may be packed for a holiday or travel.

In the case of 'phone', cell-phones (mobiles) count. I will also allow a handset that you would find in an office/home or a payphone, as these may be used to book holidays, flights, etc.

As proof, please post the edition's bookcover in your selection post that shows the items described above.

Review: I wanted to like this more because I really love a secret baby trope, but this was not done well. I gave an extra star just for the trope. Harper and Reggie would have benefitted from a whole lot of communication. The story was dragged out way too long before the reveal and then it was wrapped up quicker than Maury saying you are the father.

Read: June 9-10
Review:

If I had to pick a quote from the book that sums it all up perfectly, it would be "I had a marvelous time ruining everything". Em truly did ruin everything through her groundhog day experience - or did she? As a reader, we got to experience Valentines Day over and over again while Em had to figure out why and then decide that she just didn't care why. She was going to live life to the fullest which hadn't been doing up until this point.

This was a fun book to read - it was light while also having those tearjerking moments. I definitely wasn't expecting to tear up and cry a little but it had certain scenes that truly tugged at your heartstrings. I definitely recommend this book if you like YA, romance, groundhog day tropes.

Apologies for not updating the tracker but I will do it as soon as I have some spare time. 😬😇
Anyway, I would like to check if we are playing for a win this Friday or just for fun? 🤔

If we are play for a win🏆, we could find novellas that fit each prompt left and have them ready to read as soon as the last task is called. 📚
If fun is the aim, it doesn't matter really.🤷🏽‍♀️ We can just read at leisure 🧘🏽‍♀️

I wanted to like this book, because I believe that we should celebrate how far women have come in society, but I couldn't. The author did have an interesting writing style in setting a scene but this doesn't encourage a reader to continue if the characters are unlikeable and dysfunctional.
While I'm sure this book accurately reflects the attitude/experience of many during this time, it was clear the author's own ideas about religion, men, marriage, family, education, money, friendship, were clearly on display and sweepingly negative which is disappointing.

I'm happy to play to read to win or at leisure - whatever the consensus is.

I've never been on a winning team in this challenge so I don't recall how fast the winning team normally is. But, I think as long as we finish by Friday at some point it would be fine.

Review:
I read this book a long time ago when it first came out (about 17 years ago) and I remember really enjoying it. This time around was no different. It was very reminiscent of old school Nancy Drew - Gilda using her desire to be psychic to solve the mystery.

I think there are some heavy topics but the author does a good job at making them appropriate for the middle grade students - while also making the storyline intriguing enough to keep reading.
