Sometimes that’s the way it is. Makes the good ones even more appreciated. 🙂

Week #10
Sun Damage by Sabine Durrant
[*book:Sun Damage|60655767]
Read: 6/11/24
Rating: ✶✶✶✶
Review:
I really enjoyed this psychological thriller, featuring 2 grifters conning their way through France. It was a bit slow burn. But I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters. And the setting, in the south of France, came to life, which was perfect as a summer read. The ending was satisfying, with some good twists. This was my first book by this author, but definitely not my last.

Review
So by looking at the cover and reading the blurb, one might get lulled into thinking this book is a light-hearted rom-com. It's not. It's not an angst filled and heavy-laden with drama either - it fits somewhere nicely in between. The author wasn't afraid of and didn't skirt the hard reality of addiction issues and life in Hollywood, but she didn't make is so harsh that you didn't feel like there would be some redemption at the end. This was a romance but the heart of the story was about both MCs figuring out their issues, at first together as a catalyst, but in the end on their own because they had to find their way for themselves first.

LaurLa | 5085 comments Great job! We are all caught up and ready for the last week!

We should decide now if we want to go for the win by trying to be the first team finished with our books for the final call. I usually try to find a shortish book regardless but I think we can do it, unless any of you have plans that would keep you from reading Friday eve/early Saturday. Just let me know what you think - I'm happy either way!

message 205: by minnemoo (new)

minnemoo | 523 comments Wouldn't mind trying since we're so close and have a chance, but it's fine either way 🙂 I've got time Friday afternoon/evening so I may finish the book early anyway. Currently digging through everyone's shelves to find something short.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 1067 comments I say we go for it, but I also want to say that I'm in Utah and when we go sight seeing I have been able to read books; however, there are a lot of times the internet doesn't come through. So I might not be able to post anything until late tonight if we go back into one of the national forests here. But I say we give it a shot.

Date read: June 14
Rating: 4★
Review:
This was a cute, whimsical story with a cast of odd but endearing characters. The writing style reminded me of Georgette Heyer. Despite the silliness of the plot, there was also some interestingly sarcastic commentary about social class and the attitude of the rich, which made for some hilarious moments. I had a lot of fun reading this. It was just perfect for the afternoon right before the weekend.

Review:
Oh, I really enjoy this lighthearted, paranormal cozy mystery series. The characters have grown. And there is always an interesting mystery to solve. In this book, Holly has to find a missing princess that boards with them at the manor. The whole gang joins in on the search at a magical farm. My only complaint is the relationship between Holly and Adam. Not sure why they are together? I don’t feel the chemistry. But there were some good twists in the end. And some cliffhangers to keep me reading this series. LOL

Review
I've sort of lost the thread of this series, it's been almost 5 years since I read the last book. But there didn't seem to be much in it that mattered as far as the series goes - this book was more an intro of characters for the next books I think. Anyway, it was fast paced but still an enjoyable read. Not really rushed but I could see where the author might have skipped some deeper plot development for this being a novella. The romance between Carlyle and Jocelyn didn't actually feel rushed, no more so than most romances, I mean. It was quick but their interactions felt genuine, not contrived. Since this did intro the next set of characters who seem interesting indeed, I am looking forward to finishing out the series.

The Wharton Plot by Mariah Fredericks
[*book:The Wharton Plot|126918887]
Book: The Wharton Plot
Read: 14 June 2024
Rating: 3 stars
Review: I have to say this wasn't my favorite historical fiction. It was set during the Gilded Age, so that was kind of fun to read about. Mrs. Wharton is a writer and she meets a man, David Graham Phillips, but for some reason takes an immediate dislike of him. The next day Phillips is shot and his sister thinks it's because someone didn't want him to publish his new book. He had been getting threatening notes, so when Edith decided to do her own investigation, she began getting threatening notes too.

I liked that this was inspired by true events, so I especially wanted to like it more than I did but I'm still glad I read it.
