Finishing the month on a high note. This is a glorious novel, deceptive in its simplicity, of a Cypriot family transplanted to London after the partition of the island. Despite tragedy and sadness, it’s somehow overwhelmingly optimistic, with love in many forms conquering political and personal divides. The fig tree, a character in its own right, is a particularly lovely invention - and the tree is a great metaphor for all the layers in the book.
