When the bastard son of the king-in-waiting, Prince Chivalry, is dumped at the royal family’s feet, his life and the lives of everyone around him are changed forever. Fitzs spends his childhood on the outskirts of court, raised mostly by the stable-master. When he accidentally crosses paths with the king, he begins training as an assassin, on the king’s orders. Over the years, through challenges, disappointments, and deadly trials Fitz learns what it means to be truly loyal to someone, and who he will give his to.
I loved this book. It really sucked me in, and I could read a hundred pages without moving. Hobb’s prose is beautiful, almost musical. Although the whole book is written from Fitz’s point of view (1st person), the other characters clearly stand out. As a main character, Fitz is great, and I never got bored of spending so much time in his head. The world-building is also wonderfully done. I was never confused, but there were enough unexplained details to weave a layer of mystery into everything. Hobb has established a good base to build upon in her later books, without confusing the reader, or making the world feel too small.
