Hi!

I was nervous going into this one because I wasn’t sure if I would remember the necessary details from Divine Rivals as I read it a few months ago, but luckily, it all came back to me.

I really loved the letter format of book one so I hope we get more of that in this book. I’m curious to see how Iris’ relationship develops with Forest. He’s completely different from everything we knew about him in book one (thanks to Dacre) so I can see her struggling to repair her relationship with him, especially with everything going on with Roman.

I foresee some sort of altercation/power struggle spearheaded by Iris towards Dacre for everything he’s done/doing to Forest and Roman towards the end of the book.

Are you enjoying so far? Let me know your thoughts.

Happy reading! :)

It hasn't been that long for me since I read Divine Rivals. I was so surprised by that book. It was refreshingly new and just such a page turner. The slowburn romance had me on the edge constantly and the ending broke my heart eventhough I wasn't a whole lot surprised. Of course they'd be separated! Pain and heartache is inevitable for our wartorn couple.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments The overall vibe has gone way more dark than it had been in the first book. That had been frontline war descriptions too but for some reason, being back in Oath without Roman hurts all the more sharply. And I have a feeling Chancellor Verlice is our newest villain alongside Dacre. Him and Roman's dad. Agh why are these men so arrogant, entitled and plain dense? I wanna knock some heads here.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments "If my words have bewitched your son, then know that his possess the same magic for me."

AAAAHHHHHHHHH! I LOVE IRIS!!!!
She's just so bold and unafraid, standing up to Mr. Kitt like that.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments I hate what Dacre has done to Roman's memories to make him write for his cause. But I knew that Iris would understand. The whole world could scream against Roman but she would always know he was good and just and moral and plain perfect! Yeah I'm fangirling over Roman Carver (Charming) Kitt! I hope he gets his memories back soon and that this separation isn't for long! The poor newlyweds had barely any time together before Dacre destroyed their fragile sense of safety.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments And Iris is going to pull off a heist?? Whoa! Things just got super intriguing super quick. Haha. This is going to be a page turner like the first one, I'm sure. Iris needs her Alouette typewriter soon and I need letters from Roman equally sooooon!

I feel like we’re getting close to the reunion! I can’t wait for Roman to get his memories back, and I love that Iris has complete faith in him.

I agree that Chancellor Verlice is definitely becoming an additional villain alongside Dacre.

I think the author writes her settings very well. The imagery is so clear, I can always distinctly picture wherever the characters are and whatever’s being described.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments Yes! I loved how annoyed Dacre got when he realized Roman was still remembering things eventhough he switched his typewriter. Little does he know Iris' typewriter would be all the more precious to our boy!
On the other hand, my feelings for Dacre are getting more complex. When he talks about Enva, I feel pity for him. In his own messed up way, he did feel like he loved her and she betrayed him. Somebody tell Dacre that love is never returned through threats and captivity and force. The poor misguided God! I really wish to see some Enva-Iris interactions now that Dacre-Roman keep happening!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments And I already like Tobias Bexley, the motorcar racer turner post-runner! I foresee a romance between him and Attie! Ahh! Precious!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments Part One is done! And this feels like deja vu! We had Carver in the previous book and Elizabeth in this one. Haha. Cute. Onto Part Two now!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments I loved reading about Roman and Iris' first meeting through his perspective.

And all these mentions of the other Gods and their powers is so intriguing. I can't wait for more of them to show up! Some sound really cool. For some reason, it's giving me Throne of Glass by S J Maas vibes. That one had multiple gods and deities too.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments And I'm back to hating Dacre. The callous way in which he ordered the weakest worker to be fed to the hounds? I can't even---- aghnbvhgdi!!!!!!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments Roman and Iris letter texting each other is so cute!!!! And he told her he's HUNGRY for her wordsss! He said that without the memory that she's in fact his wife! These two are such soulmate goalssss. I don't know if you've read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi but it's a little similar in this regard. No matter how many times you take someone's memory away, if the love is true, the couple will keep finding their way back to each other and I find that so precious!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments They're going to Alva's grave!!! Exciting exciting exciting! We need more Gods in this story!!!! Even if she is the evil Dacre's sister!!!

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments Roman's letter might have just saved so many people of Enva's army but I have this feeling that he would have to pay for this. Iris did not "burn his words" like he had asked her to repeatedly. This feels ominous for some reason. Agh! I'm panicking.

And Captain Keegan is now BRIGADIER! Whoa. That escalated real quick! She deserves that promotion though, really.

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments I'll stop here for the day even though it's hard and I NEED TO KNOWWW what happens to Roman after this but---- deep breaths. Chapter 20 tomorrow!

I completely agree with the shatter me comparison. Just like Juliette and Aaron did, Roman and Iris give me Invisible String by Taylor Swift kinda vibes, if you’ve ever heard the song.

I am hoping to get a little more into the nitty gritty of the war, maybe some front line scenes.

The letter is definitely going to have consequences. I have a feeling that Dacre is going to somehow figure out that the letter was sent and then punish Roman-whether that’s punishing Roman himself or Iris, I don’t know

I’m so here for the Attie and Tobias Bexley romance. I really want to see Marisol and Keegan reunited 🙏

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments Keegan is so precious! The way she said "of course I remember you. Didn't I oversee your wedding vows?" ahhh! I smiled so big in that moment. Brigadier Keegan is awwwwesome!

I absolutely love the books where I get attached to secondary characters as well and not just the MCs. ♡

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments I'll have to listen to "invisible string" ASAP!!!

Hiiiii! Sorry I’ve been MIA, I’ve been busy the last couple of days and I’ve just caught up.

Roman has his memories back!! Yayyyyyy!!

I was surprised at how smoothly Roman convinced Dacre that there was no mole, he appeared to be nervous throughout the rest of the book, so this was definitely due to his memories coming back.

Mr.Kitts protectiveness over Roman was unexpected. I know he’s his son, but he’s been cold towards Roman in both this book and the previous.

The graveyard (I think that’s what they’re called if I’m remembering right) came out of nowhere. Their motives are unclear but it’s looking as though Mr. Kitt is associated with them. I do want to know more about Bruce.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we’re getting more of the fantasy aspect in this book compared to book one, but it feels like the romance is suffering for it. I wanted an equal balance of building the romantic connection whilst simultaneously having that fantasy plot going on. One always takes priority over the others.

The Forest and Sarah Prindle storyline literally came out of nowhere lol. Did not expect it and not sure how I feel about it. Speaking of Forest, considering that the main plot of book one was Iris trying to find him, he’s barely been in this book. I was hoping to get to know him more and see how he bonds with the other characters.

We’re nearing the end now and I’m shocked we’ve still not seen Enva in the same way we’ve seen Dacre. Or, like, seen her at all. I imagine she’ll come out of the woodworks when we hit a climax.

How’re you getting on?

Brianna C | 1252 comments I hope y’all don’t mind me hoping in on this one! (Albeit a few days behind)

Anushka Malik (_anushkamalik) | 482 comments So, I finished reading this. I'm sorry I went all radio silent towards the end after we'd been doing so well with this buddy read. Life just went bonkers and I had to travel a lot and other stuff that made me unable to update here. I had similar qualms as you, sophie. Forest was supposed to be just....more. I don't know. And no Enva (not much of her anyway) or the other gods. That was a bit of a letdown. I don't know why she ended it like this, as a duology. She had ample material for more books. Ahhh. But anyhow, I loved how Roman and Iris made me feel and that's what my review is about. Do take a look if you get time. And also, I'd love to do another buddy read sometime. This was fun!

I'm sorry we didn't get to interact more Brianna. Of course we didn't mind you hopping in. I'd love to read your views on the book and maybe we could discuss your favorite parts or the bits you didn't much like. That'd be great!
