It's about time.

And the baseball fans rejoiced!

It has been an article of faith for nearly a century, as if chiseled onto a tablet by Abner Doubleday himself: The leading hitter in major league history is, and always will be, Tyrus Raymond Cobb.
But history evolves. We know that Doubleday did not, in fact, invent baseball. And as of Wednesday, Josh Gibson will replace Cobb as the leading hitter in the official records of the game. At .372, Gibson’s career batting average eclipses Cobb’s by six points.

Major League Baseball will announce on Wednesday the results of a newly integrated statistical database covering records from Negro Leagues that operated from 1920 to 1948. The formal acceptance of the data comes three-and-a-half years after MLB officially recognized the Negro Leagues as major leagues in December 2020.
“People will be, I don’t know if upset is the word, but they may be uncomfortable with some Negro League stars now on the leaderboards for career and seasons,” said Larry Lester, an author and longtime Negro Leagues researcher who served on the committee.

Berh; Thanks for posting this! Don't have access to The Athletic. I'm reading The Baseball by 100 by Joe Posnanski. He has Josh Gibson as #15 & quotes Barry Bonds on breaking the home run record: "No. In my heart it belongs to Josh Gibson." Although Posnanski does rank Ty Cobb at #8.

I remember him - started the 1985 All Star game (the only one I have seen live) and was the winning pitcher.

I know that finding any official statistics for some Negro League games, teams and players has been a challenge. I wonder what the minimum amount of at bats or plate appearances are required in the games and seasons they have compiled?
If it truly is Gibson and not Cobb as the best hitter…well that simply means that the title is passed from one legend to another.

This article answered my question. For those who don’t subscribe to the Atlantic, here’s an article on Josh Gibson’s achievements

Another article on Negro League statistics- what caught my attention is near the end of the piece. Now players like Oscar Charleston and Turkey Stearnes will be in the top 10 of some categories as well. Time to find some more books on the Negro Leagues! https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/n...

This doesn't surprise me in the least. Glad there doesn't seem to be any ill will as his lawyer is adamant he wasn't "forced out" of the position.
Last night agent for Cubs’ pitcher Ben Brown called GM to tell him to leave Brown in game after 7. He was throwing a no hitter and up to 93 pitchers. Of course next guy in loses no no in 8th and Cubs nearly botch things up in the 9th. I am hardly a fan of combined no hitters. Leave the guy in until he gives up a hit especially if after 7. I think by then he’s earned the right to finish the job.

As I already do - well, "hate" is a strong word - but I sure hate seeing them win! Ah, well, my team can only do what they can do, right? And beating the Royals three out of four this week was great! Now onto Houston.
Going to a Syracuse Mets game tomorrow. I have a conference in Syracuse and the sessions run Sunday-Tuesday. Because they start 8 AM Sunday, wanted to get into town tomorrow and I'll be there early enough to catch Saturday's game between Buffalo and Syracuse.
I've been to this ballpark once before - similar conference and scenario in 2019. Main difference will be prices and this time, no Tim Tebow to embarrass himself.

I’m convinced a break in the space-time continuum caused Cubs to win World Series in 2016. For as long as I can remember they have done the same formula to lose and it’s not pretty. Today was horrible. I’d love just one more space-time continuum break in my lifetime.

Ha! No worries, guys :)

Brina; Have been reading Why We Love Baseball: A History in 50 Moments by Joe Posnanski & today got to #3 titled The Rain Delay Speech. Had to stop reading as I started to cry. Even though I'm a die-hard Padres fan; that game in 2016 when Cubs won WS is my pick for best baseball game ever! I know others have their favorite but that was such an emotional moment. I can still see the smile on Bryant's face when he caught the ball for the last out & then threw to Rizzo. And Rizzo knew he was going to field it. So don't give up on your Cubs :)
Those were the 8 years ago cubs. This group needs a spark. I’m headed offline for the next 24 hours. I need to be away from sports for the moment so I’m thankful for the offline time.
Best game ever: c’mon Peggy, how can anything beat game 7 in 1991? Veteran Jack Morris and youngster John Smoltz (both future HOF pitchers) matching zeros for over 7 innings and Morris ends up with a 1-0 win. THAT is the best game in our lifetime.

HaHa! I knew my comment might be controversial :) Although is always sweet when Braves lose!

If there are breaks in the space-time continuum we had best call in The Doctor. We don't want anything breaking into our universe that shouldn't be here. Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
I’m sure many here will want my team over the evil Astros this weekend. So far so good - Twins take game 1 6-1. Pablo Lopez looked like the 2023 version of himself last night.

I can totally understand your frustration.

That was a tremendous and historic game. I used to think game six of the 1975 series(the Carlton Fisk home run) was the greatest big game ever, but the Cubs game was game seven of a world series, and I guess kit was the greatest of my lifetime. Game seven of the 1960 World Series is a very close second. With due respect to Lance, the Braves were up and comers and the twins didn't have a national following. But, I will draw the scorn of Brina an others when I say that the speech was overly hyped. Hayword really didn't give a Knute Rockney like speech. Maybe it's because he was a veteran by then and the core were kids, but here is what he said. "“I just had to remind them who they were,” Heyward said to Fox Sports. “I just had to remind everybody who we are, who these guys are, what we’ve overcome to get here. Win or lose, we never worry about that. … At the beginning of the day, we never worry about win or loss. We just worry about how we’re going to go out there and have fun, compete, be right there for the guys next to us and not take the situation for granted. I just had to remind them that I’m proud of them. I say it all the time, but I’m proud of you guys.”

And the baseball fans rejoiced!"

I'm interested in this one too, but I'm going to listen to the audiobook. And it would be nice if he could pitch later this season but I am skeptical that he will be able to return to form that quickly. From what I've seen pitchers usually take about 2 years to recover from shoulder surgery, and at Kershaw's age I just don't see him making an impact this season. But we'll see...

Oh, this is the first I've heard of this! Must go digging. For your sake, C John, I don't want them to trade him either!

A great story.

Nor am i however if they don't want players to bet get rid of all the temptation. And 4 other guys suspended for a year.

Betting may become the opioid of sports.

Sort of reminds me of the Glow Bowling that has become popular, though not for league or tournament play.

To be a little bit fair, the players know that they can't bet on baseball, or while at work. It is explained at great length and there are all kinds of warnings posted in clubhouses, etc. They even know their actions will be monitored, yet some of them still try to get away with it. (I have read up on all of this because I helped my daughter with a paper she had to write for a college class about this topic.)
What I find hypocritical is this:
Bet on your team's game = lifetime ban
Cheat in World Series = no punishment (unless you are a member of the 1919 White Sox)

The reason the 1919 White Sox get singled out is that they were throwing the games on behalf of gamblers (supposedly). To the best of my knowledge no one else has been accused of that, at least not in the modern era. Of course with prop betting becoming popular who know what is going to happen. Personally I think prop betting may be more insidious than betting on the straight outcome of a game or series.
Back from Syracuse and watching the Twins-Yankees to wind down. But then, given how Yankees-Twins matchups have gone the last 25 years or so, maybe I shouldn’t subject myself to torture after the 2 1/2 hour drive home.
