I agree...Peeta was not a great catch either, but he sort of did the job.I think Catniss needed another choice. But...the book only gives you so much.

He may have failed at that point but, he was a much better match than Peeta.Also, he did want to step in for her

That is not something you get over. The way you do one thing, and the way you do all things. Gale missed the opportunity. A woman needs a man who will fight for her, not one who stands by and lets others do it for him.
Peeta is not a great character. But he is kind of in the Steve Trevor role of the book. He was always gonna be weak, cause if he wasn't, Catniss could not be the lead.
Anyway...Catniss needed better choices.
Course....the real fail is all the adults.Cause when Peeta, Gale or Catniss got selected, the adults there should have said 'no way' and restarted the war.
