SOLVED sci-fi space crew get stranded on new planet revert to meat-eating, "the discipline" [s]

This was a paperback I picked up when travelling in America in the early 80's. Everyone is vegetarian, there are people from ?Venus and ?Earth in the crew of a spacecraft think sent to investigate a planet. The Earthborn resent that they are given all the menial labour jobs (being stronger, having developed under a higher gravity).

The ship is stranded on the planet and loses contact with the outside world. The Earthers have a drunken party and revert to eating meat, they are basically the baddies of the story. They get violent towards the other ones, who I think are pacifists. Towards the end of the book I remember as the ?venusians are being tortured they use a breathing routine called "the discipline" to blot the pain out. It was clearly intended as the first book of a series.

Alana, I think you are almost certainly right!

The reviews on Amazon mention the "Discipline" and "heavy-worlders". Funny that I don't remember anything about the dinosaurs - what a selective thing memory is!

I have ordered it, and will confirm if it's right so this can go in the "solved" folder.

Yes, it was "Dinosaur Planet". Thanks Alana. I was not aware that I had read any of Anne McCaffrey's, so now I have a new author to explore - great! :-)
