May Panayi (goodreadscommayjpanayi) | 4 comments Actually this topic is not specifically about the above book but it does fall into the area of concern. I have read some posts here and on a SN site recently indicating Kindle will no longer publish books with swear words. Have they changed the rules is my question. The above book got through okay with swearing and in places fairly explicit sex scenes, and I have a Kindle book by a friend that is much more graphic erotic fiction. We both ticked the 'over 18' box too. I am currently writing a horror novel, and pondering whether to edit the language. In places I think it would detract from the story to do so, and in the sex scenes to use other words would make the reader cringe or laugh and that just isn't the intent, obviously. But if I am going to have trouble publishing because rules have changed, I will buckle under and do the edit. Does anyone have any good advice, or know more fully what is going on with Kindle?

D.S. Wrights (dswrights) They have earlier this year. I've had my own experiences with it. I have found out by trial and error that there is an amount of times you are allowed to use specific words.
If the amount is surpassed, the book will be blocked. If you manage to get your book accepted and you want to change ANYTHING, make sure that you add a higher number to the version of the book, otherwise: your book will be blocked.
Rather take the safe path and publish a revised edition as a new book, in case it gets blocked, you have at least the older version still available.

Words that are sensitive: fuck, rape, sex, shit,...
It looks like you cannot use them more than 10 times.

My advice is to keep swearing out of your blurb and title. I used the word, "fuck" more than ten times in my novel. No mention of rape, underage sex , bestiality or incest are allowed in the blurb or title.

D.S. Wrights (dswrights) All of this applied to my book as well - apart from the usage of the verb rape less than ten times), until I tried to update the edition.
You can imagine my surprise.

May Panayi (goodreadscommayjpanayi) | 4 comments Thanks for the feedback. It's very confusing. I think I'm going to go ahead and try without the edit, but will keep an eye on how often some words come up and maybe change some of them. Not quite at the final edit yet, but it's good to have a bit of a handle on this stuff in advance.

D.S. Wrights (dswrights) I'd still listen to Brina's advice. It's obviously very important which genre you pick to and what you are writing in your blurb.
