The book Pouch by David Ezra Stein is about a young Joey building the courage to leave his momma’s pouch. Throughout the book it describes the new interactions and experiences the Joey has. Because the young Joey hasn’t explored before he is often to shy and overwhelmed by the new people he meets in his way. This leads the Joey to return to his momma’s pouch almost every time. This is, into he meets another young Joey, and they share the fear of meeting new people, through this they bond and create a friendship, which leads to them not wanting to return to their pouches. The section, the codes of line and capillarity states that “thin spare lines might suggest mobility and speed, thick, blurred or puffy lines, paralysis or comfortable statis” (Moebius, 258). The images provided when it mentions that the Joey hops say a lot whenever they are shown. For example, when the Joey initially hops out to explore, they are yellow and solid, indicating where the Joey has hopped. When comparing the lines shown when the Joey returns to the Pouch, they are less defined as they are showing the rush and anxiety that the Joey feels while returning to the pouch. In addition, as mentioned in the section of codes, positions, size, and diminishing returns the size in characters matter, as it can be a sign of power or position. Whenever the Joey is returning to the pouch, the size is smaller compared to when he is leaving the pouch expressing how small and vulnerable, he is when the Joey is out in the real world. Overall, the story book, concludes by the Joey forming a friendship and both remain out of their pouch showing confidence in both characters.
