Underground Knowledge — A discussion group discussion

What really happened to the dinosaurs? And how come the Bible doesn't mention dinosaurs? (A satirical discussion thread from deep inside the Underground mental asylum - DISCLAIMER: consult with your shrink before reading and post at your own risk!)

Perspective????? obviously the perspective of me and my Ivy League colleagues. We, of the greatest of minds, have rigorously pursued the disciplines of scientific fact. Our sacrifice has given the rabble of the world the benefits of nuclear energy, thalidomide, MK-Ultra, and bacterial warfare, to name a few; the rest rightfully only privy to those of us with a certain level of understanding. I have taken the risk of sharing some of these thoughts with the inferiorly educated and prone-to- nonsense habitués of Underground Knowledge. For that venture into egalitarianism I have been rewarded with chastisement, low class jokes and derision. Talk about casting pearls before swine. ..."
ha ha ha!

Technically we're all cousins... very distant cousins...

It may annoy one or two Princeton-style scholars as it highlights the delusion that science already knows everything about the nature of reality...
The Science Delusion: Freeing The Spirit Of Enquiry by leading biologist Rupert Sheldrake is a scientific rebuttal to The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.
The science delusion is the belief that science already understands the nature of reality. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. In this book, Dr Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world's most innovative scientists, shows that science is being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. The 'scientific worldview' has become a belief system. All reality is material or physical. The world is a machine, made up of dead matter. Nature is purposeless. Consciousness is nothing but the physical activity of the brain. Free will is an illusion. God exists only as an idea in human minds, imprisoned within our skulls. Sheldrake examines these dogmas scientifically, and shows persuasively that science would be better off without them: freer, more interesting, and more fun.
In The God Delusion Richard Dawkins used science to bash God, but here Rupert Sheldrake shows that Dawkins' understanding of what science can do is old-fashioned and itself a delusion.
About Rupert Sheldrake:

Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and ten books. A former Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he studied natural sciences at Cambridge University, where he was a Scholar of Clare College, took a double first class honours degree and was awarded the University Botany Prize. He then studied philosophy and history of science at Harvard University, where he was a Frank Knox Fellow, before returning to Cambridge, where he took a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology. As the Rosenheim Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he carried out research on the development of plants and the ageing of cells in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University.
Recently, drawing on the work of French philosopher Henri Bergson, he developed the theory of morphic resonance, which makes use of the older notion of morphogenetic fields. He has researched and written on topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, telepathy, perception and metaphysics.

Didn't God or his representatives on Earth speak of the brotherhood of man?

It follows on from Ed (in character as Princeton scholar) saying the rest of us are all idiots and he knows everything.

You see, Laureen? Now you're the one making the mistake of thinking any of this is anything but satire :)

You are far to quick for me James. "Scientific fact ... Until next revision" love that quote. I always get the giggles.

Sounds like you're literally going underground with those holes you're digging...If you find any dino fossils while you're digging, please report back.

Because dinos were the only animals on the planet 65 million years ago...Science says humans and modern animals arrived much later and only in the last few million years.

Surrrrrre... *cough cough*

Why were dinos the only creatures then?

Fay, we're starting to go round and round in circles like your earlier description of dino birds flapping and flapping their wings as they circled Noah's Ark after the flood...
Basically, Christian Fundamentalists (not to be confused with regular, mainstream Christians) have trouble understanding things like dinosaurs or virtually anything science says about the Earth's 4.5 billion year history as it clashes with their stubborn belief that the Earth and the entire Universe is only a few thousand years old.
But I've got faith you'll eventually see the Light ;)

What I'm saying is it's impossible to have a "scientific debate" when one party believes the Earth is only 10,000 years old (and therefore denies all scientific discoveries of the last few centuries!).
So I vote we go back to the comical angle of this thread and agree to disagree.

What I'm saying is it's impossible to have a "scientific debate" when one party believes the Earth is only 10,000 years old (and therefore denie..."
Well, I wasn't feeling up to a debate I just kinda wanted to know...

Okay guys, you're forcing me to just google this stuff. Thank you.

Anyways, so then if the earth is soooo old, why isn't our technology waaaaay more advanced than it is now? I mean, I'd expect that everybody drove flying cars by now...

So you're saying that the apes we evolved from were not as smart as humans?

Good luck, Fay.
Independent research, beyond what we have been told by our parents or teachers or society, is where it all begins for each of us. Even if you change none of your beliefs in the long-run, at least by doing independent research you can confirm and verify the beliefs you currently hold.
Also keep in mind this has been a satirical thread, so please don't mistake any of my jokes in this discussion as being disrespectful. I actually see zero conflict between religions/spirituality and science and think all perceived conflicts are actually misunderstandings by either religious people or scientists.
I just happen to strongly believe you're wrong in this particular view you have on the Earth's history, but that's merely one subject and no doubt I am wrong about many other (different) subjects so it all evens out, know what I mean?

Actually, the oldest human remains found so far is 2.8 million years old as per this article:
First Known Human Found in Ethiopia -- http://news.discovery.com/human/evolu...

Krishna, one thing about the evolution theory is they keep finding older and older human remains...So how do we know humans didn't "evolve" via intelligent design? Like, intelligent (ET) design as per this pic: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...

Okay then...

The Underground Knowledge pea brains!
Ha!
You're a master of the one-liner, Ed.

You ol' fossil. You are doing really well to be digging up pipes. Must be a pretty fit old fossil!

So could it be that whoever controls the matrix just pressed the "delete" button and the dinos were instantly erased from the computer simulated world we find ourselves living in?
:)

Probably right.
But you gotta admit the image of some guy outside the matrix simply pressing the delete button and the poor dinos being instantly erased from our reality is pretty funny mental picture.
And in case you haven't noticed, this entire discussion thread seems to favor humor over logic...

Hmmmm...I still think my Matrix theory is more likely!

Well, if true then I hope everyone in this group doesn't get erased from the matrix due to us questioning things society tells us not to question...
It seems to me, in amongst all the silly humor and heated arguments and intellectual point-scoring, this group is starting to get into Adam & Eve territory i.e. We may be about to start eating some forbidden fruit from the tree of (forbidden) knowledge...
Either that or this group is just a forum for endless dino jokes!!

I have no idea the answer to your complex question but I think what you're implying is right: once your reach a certain level of understanding this world it seems like you start finding every serious argument humorous and conversely you start seeing deep truths in comedy or supposedly meaningless comments.

It's funny you should mention that James, because I've been contemplating a similar combination of subjects with the Matrix in mind, but seeing as it's going back down the 'Earth is 10,000 years old' route I thought I might leave it alone- but, with that in mind; I was thinking what an odd belief it is, held by so few (not meaning to label you particularly Fay!) and how adamant I am that its likeliness has a probability somewhere plummeting down from zero, when I suddenly realised that I believe we are indeed in a matrix of sorts, and if that is so, then actually the Earth could well be only 10,000 years old. A 'computer programme' can conjur whatever tricks it wants.
Now then, who'd like to tell me if we're in the land of humour or serious discussion? ;)

Not sure which land we are in, but maybe we are in hell. Literally.

Ha ha ha!
I assume you're joking?
If not, read the Bible and you'll find out.
Then again, maybe the writers of the Bible had time machines and stole Jeffrey Archer's idea from the future...

Cain and Abel were Adam and Eve's kids. Cain killed Abel.

Cain and Abel were Adam and Eve's kids. Cain killed Abel."
Not according to the Gospel of Ed (written in New Mexico, 2015, but since included in some Bibles).
In this Gospel, Abel was James Dean in "East of Eden"...Cain was some B-Grade actor, which is a lesson to all those who are thinking of doing bad things in this world.
