James Morcan | 11380 comments I added this book (below) to the group's bookshelf.
It may annoy one or two Princeton-style scholars as it highlights the delusion that science already knows everything about the nature of reality...

The Science Delusion: Freeing The Spirit Of Enquiry by leading biologist Rupert Sheldrake is a scientific rebuttal to The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins.

The science delusion is the belief that science already understands the nature of reality. The fundamental questions are answered, leaving only the details to be filled in. In this book, Dr Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world's most innovative scientists, shows that science is being constricted by assumptions that have hardened into dogmas. The 'scientific worldview' has become a belief system. All reality is material or physical. The world is a machine, made up of dead matter. Nature is purposeless. Consciousness is nothing but the physical activity of the brain. Free will is an illusion. God exists only as an idea in human minds, imprisoned within our skulls. Sheldrake examines these dogmas scientifically, and shows persuasively that science would be better off without them: freer, more interesting, and more fun.

In The God Delusion Richard Dawkins used science to bash God, but here Rupert Sheldrake shows that Dawkins' understanding of what science can do is old-fashioned and itself a delusion.

About Rupert Sheldrake:

Rupert Sheldrake

Rupert Sheldrake is a biologist and author of more than 80 scientific papers and ten books. A former Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he studied natural sciences at Cambridge University, where he was a Scholar of Clare College, took a double first class honours degree and was awarded the University Botany Prize. He then studied philosophy and history of science at Harvard University, where he was a Frank Knox Fellow, before returning to Cambridge, where he took a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He was a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, where he was Director of Studies in biochemistry and cell biology. As the Rosenheim Research Fellow of the Royal Society, he carried out research on the development of plants and the ageing of cells in the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University.

Recently, drawing on the work of French philosopher Henri Bergson, he developed the theory of morphic resonance, which makes use of the older notion of morphogenetic fields. He has researched and written on topics such as animal and plant development and behaviour, telepathy, perception and metaphysics.

James Morcan | 11380 comments Fay wrote: "Why were dinos the only creatures then? ..."

Fay, we're starting to go round and round in circles like your earlier description of dino birds flapping and flapping their wings as they circled Noah's Ark after the flood...

Basically, Christian Fundamentalists (not to be confused with regular, mainstream Christians) have trouble understanding things like dinosaurs or virtually anything science says about the Earth's 4.5 billion year history as it clashes with their stubborn belief that the Earth and the entire Universe is only a few thousand years old.

But I've got faith you'll eventually see the Light ;)

James Morcan | 11380 comments Fay wrote: "Okay guys, you're forcing me to just google this stuff. Thank you."

Good luck, Fay.
Independent research, beyond what we have been told by our parents or teachers or society, is where it all begins for each of us. Even if you change none of your beliefs in the long-run, at least by doing independent research you can confirm and verify the beliefs you currently hold.

Also keep in mind this has been a satirical thread, so please don't mistake any of my jokes in this discussion as being disrespectful. I actually see zero conflict between religions/spirituality and science and think all perceived conflicts are actually misunderstandings by either religious people or scientists.

I just happen to strongly believe you're wrong in this particular view you have on the Earth's history, but that's merely one subject and no doubt I am wrong about many other (different) subjects so it all evens out, know what I mean?

James Morcan | 11380 comments To combine two different discussion topics (for humor or legitimate discussion purposes, I'm not entirely sure!), I was thinking about the mysterious disappearance of the dinos 65 million years ago in relation to the idea that this whole universe could be nothing but a computer simulation ala The Matrix: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

So could it be that whoever controls the matrix just pressed the "delete" button and the dinos were instantly erased from the computer simulated world we find ourselves living in?

:)

Probably right.
But you gotta admit the image of some guy outside the matrix simply pressing the delete button and the poor dinos being instantly erased from our reality is pretty funny mental picture.
And in case you haven't noticed, this entire discussion thread seems to favor humor over logic...

James Morcan | 11380 comments Krishna wrote: "I think the matrix theory makes some sense."

Well, if true then I hope everyone in this group doesn't get erased from the matrix due to us questioning things society tells us not to question...
It seems to me, in amongst all the silly humor and heated arguments and intellectual point-scoring, this group is starting to get into Adam & Eve territory i.e. We may be about to start eating some forbidden fruit from the tree of (forbidden) knowledge...

I have no idea the answer to your complex question but I think what you're implying is right: once your reach a certain level of understanding this world it seems like you start finding every serious argument humorous and conversely you start seeing deep truths in comedy or supposedly meaningless comments.

Harry Whitewolf | 1745 comments James Morcan wrote: "To combine two different discussion topics (for humor or legitimate discussion purposes, I'm not entirely sure!), I was thinking about the mysterious disappearance of the dinos 65 million years ago..."

It's funny you should mention that James, because I've been contemplating a similar combination of subjects with the Matrix in mind, but seeing as it's going back down the 'Earth is 10,000 years old' route I thought I might leave it alone- but, with that in mind; I was thinking what an odd belief it is, held by so few (not meaning to label you particularly Fay!) and how adamant I am that its likeliness has a probability somewhere plummeting down from zero, when I suddenly realised that I believe we are indeed in a matrix of sorts, and if that is so, then actually the Earth could well be only 10,000 years old. A 'computer programme' can conjur whatever tricks it wants.

Now then, who'd like to tell me if we're in the land of humour or serious discussion? ;)

Not according to the Gospel of Ed (written in New Mexico, 2015, but since included in some Bibles).
In this Gospel, Abel was James Dean in "East of Eden"...Cain was some B-Grade actor, which is a lesson to all those who are thinking of doing bad things in this world.
