theDuke | 6491 comments Hi Val......a chap i have played a separate tipping comp on a vaping forum i'm a member of, is hoping to find his way on here and ,maybe join in with our group. I've invited him to come over, as there aren't many AFL fans on the vaping forum, but not sure what one has to do to join a group? I would ask Gordon, but hasn't been around for yonks...in fact who is the mod here now?

Anyway..hopefully he find his in, and join in with our rabble lot! :)

Val H. | 22141 comments I think he will have to register with Goodreads first. If he is already an Amazon customer (in any country) he should be able to join/sign in to Goodreads using his Amazon details.

Once signed in he should be able to access the Amazon Exiles forum is at:
https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

and the 2024 tipping comp at:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I can give him average scores for the Opening Round and Round 1.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Wow Val just got home from a Peter Garrett concert at the Thornbury Theatre. What a venue. He is playing in his separate band The Alter Egos and after one of his new songs from the album only released this week he made the comment that tonight it was the first time it has been played south of the Murray. Not sure if he was being ironic but he said all he was thinking of was would The Bombers win this weekend!
It was a great gig at such a small venue.

message 60: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I've been there a few times - last being last October when we saw American country/swing band Asleep At The Wheel - fantastic night, sat at round tables of about 8, the dance floor was chockers. Earlier last year we saw The Milk Carton Kids there but it wasn't as good in squashed rows of seats. But I agree, it's a nice venue, though I think I prefer the Brunswick Ballroom. On Easter Sunday we're off to a new venue (to me), the Northcote Theatre (not to be confused with the Northcote Social Club). We're going to see Drive-By Truckers there. So, is Peter Garrett a Bombers supporter or a worried Swans supporter? If the latter, I'm pleased he's worried although I think it's needless.

P.S. Did you see my message re the M.T.C. play "37"? Highly recommended. I'm sure you'll recognise the jumper number.

message 64: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Sorry Val I must have missed your comment but Adam Goodes wore number 37. Think I must try to get to see the play as I understand it is set around the incident of the 13 year old who racially abused him from the touchline on that infamous evening.

message 65: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Not so much about that specific incident as about racism in footy in general and footy as a sub-set of society. It stems from Adam Goodes' dance (in Indigenous Round) which apparently "threatened" the Carlton cheer squad! The two indigenous main actors are also trained dancers and the footy sequences are choreographed by one of the Bangarra members. Good review in The Age which you should be able to find online.

message 66: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Yes just discussing with my wife so we are planning on going.
I was at the match against Carlton and his wonderful tribal dance took place just in front of us. I dont think anyone appreciated what he was going through at the time.
He provided so many memories in my first few seasons as a supporter although I suspect I missed his best years. Of course he was playing alongside a young Buddy in that period.
Last night I hadn't thought Garrett, being so serious, could also be very funny. Think he was very relaxed and happy in front of a small audience.

I always liked Micky O'Loughlin's defuser. Something along the lines of "Shame Adam wasn't a better dancer."

It is to the AFL's eternal shame that Adam Goodes left the game under such a cloud after the terrible treatment he endured. The fact that he wasn't able to celebrate his stellar career, both as a player and a man, at that year's Grand Final parade of retiring champions still sticks in the gullet.

6.2.38 (Q2) 7.4.46
11.7.73 (Q3) 8.5.53
14.10.94 (Q4) 12.7.79

Once again, I may have tipped the Pies but there is nothing as satisfying as seeing them get beaten. 0-3 - what a dream start to the season for all us Collingwood haters! Well done St Kilda for throwing everything at the reigning premiers and not losing their cool at any point.

And well done Tim for picking the closest margin (Saints x 10). You win another $7.00 for the Koala Hospital at Port Macquarie.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments My roll will disappear from today. Made a few odd picks but simply didn't understand why only 3 out of the 14 experts in The Age tipped the Cats.
Seems to me everyone is going on about The Swans (maybe rightly but its only 2 matches) and The Bombers have big players returning this evening.

message 79: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I was surprised that 6 of The Age experts tipped St Kilda! I thought Collingwood would have to turn around after two losses, and especially playing at the G.

The Bombers may be getting a few players back but they've also lost Parish, Redman, Reid and Ridley. The Swans play so well on the smaller ground, I expect them to really expose the Bombers' weaknesses.

message 80: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Anita wrote: "so sorry,a very bad week"

Hope things improve soon Anita.

message 81: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Best wishes to my fellow Swans supporter.
Agree it was the case they played well on their small gound but they did revel at the G last weekend and stretched The Pies all over the place. We shall see. What is annoying is the fact that for the second week running The Reds and The Swans are starting again within 5 minutes of each other. In this case there is little reason as The Reds are playing in Perth but the match kicks off locally at 4 35 making it 7 35 here in Melbourne. They normally start at 7ish in Perth. Could be a hot one. The Sheffield Shield final is currently on in Perth and that looked very hot for the first 2 days.

message 82: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments Well I don't know how things are going in your house Tim but we're witnessing a very tough and tense game up in Sydney. I've given up counting how many times the lead has changed. I don't like watching niggly games and it seems that Brad Scott's call for Essendon to have an "edge" has been heeded by the players. I still think Sydney are vastly superior, and more experienced, and will prevail in the end but the Bombers must feel like annoying mosquitoes to the Swans.

It will be interesting to see how the tribunal judges Peter Wright given their inconsistencies already this year. I don't know how James Sicily won his appeal but Mason Redman got rubbed out for a fairly innocuous contact (but then I would say that, wouldn't I?) I thought Wright had his eye on the ball up until the last minute when he turned his shoulder and dropped his eyes.

I suppose the teams do have history too. Luke Parker's jibes at Dylan Shiel; Dane Rampe's climbing the goal post and shaking it; Plugger's behind in the 1996 Preliminary Final, beating Essendon by a point. And you can probably come up with some examples where the Swans felt hard done by. Mind you in the three examples I've given, the Swans won each time. I must admit I've never quite forgiven Rampe for yelling from the boundary that North had too many players on the field and thus denied the Roos an inspirational win in a season where they hardly won any games. I know Rampe was right but he had no business coaching from the boundary when Lachie Hunter of Melbourne got a $1500 fine for yelling at a Hawthorn player (also from the boundary).

That's the thing about footy though - we're all one-eyed when it's our team!

message 84: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments That is a full summary of the Swans match. I have sympathy with Wright. It is a split second decision and once in the air it is impossible to pull out. I hope he doesnt get too many matches but think he will miss at least one. There was niggle all night and you are right these two teams do not get on.
Thought Bombers were on top in first half but so pleased the way Swans came back particularly at the end. Gulden and Heeney were magnificent and Chad Warner just kept running.

message 85: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Very rare you score 100 and lose so Bombers should feel proud about that

message 86: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments The Bombers started well and went on the attack immediately. I think their defence was shown up too often. Once Sydney detected the gaping holes they took advantage of it and they are fortunate in having any number of players that can score. Five goals was probably an accurate example of the difference between the teams. They are looking awesome.

message 87: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thanks Val we are looking good in attack. We have speed from so many players. I think we have been building up to this for a couple of seasons. Need to keep perspective but unlike the last two premiers we are a young team and fingers crossed we can keep it going for 2 or 3 seasons. Swans have always managed to rebuild and I love the fact we have a long term coach who from time to time faces criticism but mainly from Victoria and never from Sydney.
I rarely speak positively about my teams for fear that they will crumble but I really feel the Swans can go on from here. I hope I do not regret this on Easter Sunday at the G against Richmond.

message 88: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments You are right about the Rampe incident last year. It sat uneasily with me at the time and still does. It is a very tough game and you do not need players intervening like that. I was at that match and had no idea what happened until I got home. At the game I was thrilled we had pulled out a miracle but to be honest it felt false.

message 89: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments John Longmire is so underrated as a coach. People and the media rave about Chris Scott and Damien Hardwick and Craig McRae while Longmire quietly goes about his business turning out a competitive team year after year. Credit must also go to their list management. They have had the benefit of the Sydney Academy but it has been warranted by the way they have grown the game in NSW, as seen by the great crowd last night. And they've also managed to maintain a loyal following in Melbourne.

message 90: by Tim (new)

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments The support here continues to amaze me. Its over 40 years since they were relocated and the loyalty of fans in Melbourne is fantastic.

Val H. | 22141 comments The Swans are immortalised in two songs that I know of - both by favourite artists of mine. Both songs are paeans to a time gone by:

When The Swans Return - Weddings Parties Anything

I spent my youth down by the markets near the docks
We went chasing all the wharfies girls in their cheap floral frocks
I spent my money at them waterside hotels
We were regulars at all of them the barmen knew us well
Six o'clock was closing then we would swill then travel home
or drink some bottles on the beach
Then when winter came around we'd head down to the oval
We'd stand there in the freezing cold, watch our heroes train

Chorus:
Because there's just so many tricks that an old dog he can learn
and I will spend my life a waiting 'til the Swans return

I earnt my money doing this and doing that
I could never seem to stick at anything
I'd turn my hand to almost any job of work
and it was funny how my luck would run, I'd look after number one
Then when the depression came it was time to hit the track
There was no point starving in the town
Told my Mum that I would write, and my old man that I'd be back
By footy season, couldn't let our heroes down

Chorus:
Because there's just so many tricks that an old dog he can learn
and I will spend my life a waiting 'til the Swans return

Bridge:
Well I was down the Star and Garter when the news it came
There was nothin' anyone could do nor anyone could say
So we will fill a flowing glass to a team that's gone
but we're drinking to the red and white (to some of us it'll always be South Melbourne)

Chorus:
Because there's just so many tricks that an old Blood he can learn
and I will spend my life a waiting
I will spend my life a hating
Oh I can't do nought but bleeding, 'til the Swans return

(This clip by WPA frontman and songwriter Mick Thomas isn't as good as the recorded version but it's the only one available)

and

The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw - Perry Keyes, a rusted on Rabbitohs fan (more recently covered by Perry's good friend Tim Freedman of The Whitlams)

Sunrise on the station breaks the morning's spell
Red and green streamers flyin' outside the Railway View Hotel
Cleveland Street shuffles shinin' into the mighty roar
We were walkin' through the twilight the day John Sattler broke his jaw

Livin' eight to a house, post Menzies' Land of Plenty
But there was nothin' left for people like us in September 1970
Some worked the Eveleigh railway yards, some worked the tanneries on the Botany shore
We didn't work the Saturday that John Sattler broke his jaw

Chorus:
If it's high enough, if it's long enough, if it's straight between the posts
Drink your beer but shed no tears for these days you miss the most
Every step and sill sat shinin' in Black-It from door to door
And the tears rolled down like Reschs the day John Sattler broke his jaw

Saturday morning on the Botany Road was mean and it was lean
Rabbit killers in old Ford Falcons stallin' through a richer man's dream
By afternoon we were jammed tight inside the hotel doors
Even the T.A.B. was empty the day John Sattler broke his jaw

Chorus:
If it's high enough, if it's long enough, if it's straight between the posts
Drink your beer but shed no tears for these days you miss the most
Every step and sill sat shinin' in Black-It from door to door
And the tears rolled down like Reschs the day John Sattler broke his jaw

In the Ladies Lounge a young girl rocks a pram
Some old guy downs a Flag Ale with the ghost of Dave Sands
Clothes lines fly high, the sun sinks behind the flats
Where stoned girls walk in circles with their babies on their backs

As big trucks roll down wide streets with heroin filled storm drains
Suburban towns turn blue and brown and use old wars for their street names
They sent you down to Campbelltown to Mount Druitt and St Marys
Young Labor sits stoned in a terrace house, the Sydney Swans on Pay TV

Chorus:
If it's high enough, if it's long enough, if it's straight between the posts
Drink your beer but shed no tears for these days you miss the most
Every step and sill sat shinin' in Black-It from door to door
And the tears rolled down like Reschs the day John Sattler broke his jaw

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Thank you so much Val for sending those songs through which I shall print off for my mates for next Sundays game at the G. I have been told the history of Sydney in a time not that long past. When we moved we lived in Pyrmont for 7 years and whilst by the time we lived there it had become genteel we found out that it had not been that many years before when it was a very rough place to live with regular fights between bikers and wharfies who frequented the 2 pubs at the bottom of our road. One had been closed in the mid 1980's after an ugly fight resuling in a fatal stabbing. This remained ivy clad with rotting and boarded up windows and we were told inside the glasses remained on the bar where left when the police closed it. This pub was finally refurbished and brought back to life in 2018 and called by its original name The Terminus after the fact that it is was by the final stop on the
old tram route along Harris Street. The whole area has an old history of heavy industrialisation and the main employer was CSR as a sugar refinery. Today there are only a few reminders of this time but there are bits of the old machinery and wharfs to be seen.
We have also heard of the old 6 o'clock swill which sounds horrendous and I believe remained in Victoria until 1966. In Sydney Pyrmont was on the main route out of the CBD and its pubs became regular stops for drivers to down a few beers for the journey home. Great safety.
My friend Chris has been a Swan fan since they moved to Sydney in the early 1980's soI know he will love these songs so many thanks.

Val H. | 22141 comments It was my pleasure Tim - as I said, I am a real fangirl of both artists, own their complete discography and go to see them whenever I can. I'm proud to call Perry a personal friend. Caught up with him last June when he played a hole-in-the wall venue in St Kilda. He's a lovely bloke. All his songs are about the lost Sydney of the 1970s and how the gentrification created a dispossessed population in the new suburbs that had little infrastructure. They are bittersweet vignettes about poverty, drug taking/dealing and prostitution. They can bring me to tears very easily and I'm not even familiar with Sydney or the era.
EDIT: I believe the Eveleigh Railway Workshops are now the site of Australian Technology Park. I vaguely remember seeing something on Getaway or one of those programmes about keeping some of the metalworking crafts alive.

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments That is wonderful. Living in Sydney for 10 years it never ceased to amaze me that suburbs like Balmain and Pyrmont where you need 2 million to buy a broom cupboard now were so poor and fill of poverty and drugs as recently as the 1990's.
I will watch the links you sent.

Val H. | 22141 comments I should have mentioned that Mick Thomas is a Saints supporter. He mentions footy in some of his songs. There's the one about winning the Grand Final (for any team) - "A DVD and a New Tattoo". And his lovely song about Melbourne, "Under The Clocks" says:

We could find a pub where it is warm,
Study up our racing form,
Hit the TAB, we'll blow our money there, tell me this -
Is there anywhere you'd rather be
Than with me at the MCG,
And if the Saints get done again,
By Christ, I couldn't care.

Billy Bragg (not an Aussie!) also sings about the Saints in his "Yarra Song":

There's a chill tonight on the Yarra
Winter is creeping in
While far away my loved ones
Wake up in England's spring

And although delights await me
All the way to Flinders Street
It's that little piece of heaven
With which they must compete

When The Saints take on The Magpies
Some day too far away
I barrack for St. Kilda
In that funny game they play

But my heart's not really in it
My mind wanders to a town
Where The Hammers sing "I'm forever blowing bubbles"
And the rain comes pouring down

Yes, it's still raining in England
Guess that's why I like it here
There's a brolly in my hotel room
For when the skies aren't clear

'Cos it never rains in Sydney
And it never rains in Perth
Adelaide's a desert
And Brisbane's just scorched earth

So excuse me please such days as there
And send me to the town
Where the children sing when St. Kilda win
And the rain comes falling down

So wake me up tomorrow
And send me home again
To where The Hammers sing "I'm forever blowing bubbles"
In the pouring London rain

Tim Watts (redswatts) | 550 comments Not bad for a Londoner. Obviously has an affinity for Melbourne and sums us up nicely. There is a special feeling around the G on match days in Richmond and around Flinders Street.
