Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments Woohoo, can't wait to get started on this with y'all! 😄

Katherine | 231 comments This is so creative! Looking forward to reading with everyone!

message 4: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments Looking forward to reading with everyone! I added what I have to the spreadsheet, but will look more for specific prompts after the plans tab has more filled in. By chance, I happened to have 3 audiobooks checked out that were 5 hours or under, so saved them for the r-a-t.

message 5: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments This looks like a lot of fun! I added the books I am planning on reading next to the spreadsheet but once we get into it I am open to changing this up to fill in any gaps we might have.

message 6: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments Hi Team, I'm so excited to be doing this readathon with you all :D This theme is so fun!

I added our names to the tracking tab of the spreadsheet and added a bunch of columns to the planning tab (and some to the completed tab) since we're already making great progress on that.

I definitely have a historical romance novel I can throw at the 18th century prompt, so I'll get started on that today and will revise the title I have on the planning sheet once I've chosen one.

message 7: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 303 comments Hello everyone! As always I love a read-a-thon. I love that I get so much reading done! This should be the boost I need right now...been in a wee bit of a slump.

message 8: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments Jessica I hope you are able to get out of your slump! Read-a-thons are often a perfect cure.

I am working my way through All the Sinners Bleed it is hard to put down so hope to finish quickly.

message 9: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments Hi team, happy first day of the readathon!!

@Jessica, I also love readathons for the same reason - I always get so much more reading done than I normally would in the same timeframe. And I love the team format since we can cheer each other on!

@Samantha, it's awesome that your book is hard to put down, I hope it's a great read!!

message 10: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments I usually end up in a slump the week after a readathon since I try to read so much more during the week.

I've had a pretty busy day, but have gotten some audio time in while in transit. My friend's kiddo is sick so evening plans got canceled which means I now have some time for reading.

message 11: by Robin H-R (new)

Robin H-R Holmes Richardson (acetax) | 957 comments A Lack of Temperance (Hattie Davish Mystery #1) by Anna Loan-Wilsey A Lack of Temperance, Anna Loan-Wilsey

Finished: 2/10/2024
Pages: 135 (read after 12:00 am)

message 12: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments @Traci, I do too! Sometimes I read more during a readathon than I do in 1-2 months!

@Robin, Woo hoo, thanks for completing the first book of our team challenge!

I did not have time to properly sit down and read today, but I did manage to read a short book of nature comics for pages during my downtime. I should have more time to read starting Monda!

message 13: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments That's funny. I did not realize that this was beginning so soon. But I had been pushing to finish a book (Kindle) that the library was planning to take back by the end of the day.

The Great Train Robbery (Movie Edition) by Michael Crichton The Great Train Robbery by Michael Crichton

Finished: 2/10/2024
Pages: 255 (read today)

message 14: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments Busy day today, at my niece's 7th birthday party, but I did finish King Nyx. It's a strange but compelling book, and I really liked it until the ending, which didn't totally work for me unfortunately. I put it on Green > Outdoors plays a significant role.

message 15: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 231 comments I thought I would finish one of my In Progress books yesterday, but instead I started two new ones, one Kindle and one audio. Both of them are longer and won't be finished until the end of next weekend. Today I'll try to finish Chain-Gang All-Stars, which I actually don't want to end!

message 16: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments @J, that book looks super interesting, I had no idea Michael Crichton wrote books like that! I have yet to read Jurassic Park even though it's been on my shelf forever.

@Roxana, happy birthday to your niece!

@Katherine, I also started a new book instead of finishing one I had in progress. I decided to read Candide by Voltaire for the 18th century book prompt since it's another book I've owned for years.

message 17: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments @Irene I am glad that you are taking on the challenge of reading an 18th century book. I am generally ok with changing up my reading to fit prompts but historical books are not my strength. Nice to have a team!

I finished All the Sinners Bleed. I put it under Purple - A book in which a character gets justice.

I am not sure if after the super bowl I will be eager to indulge in reading or if it will dull my brain so much I can't concentrate on anything.

I am going to start Seven Days in June next.

message 18: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments I finished audiobooks yesterday and today and added them to prompts/ completed tabs. This ended up being a busier weekend than expected, but still got some good hours in.

For a character cooked a meal: there was a brief mention of cooking a meal in my book including what was being cooked, 30-60 seconds probably. Do you all think that counts? Maybe there will be another cooking mentioned.

message 19: by JessicaMHR (last edited Feb 11, 2024 10:58PM) (new)

JessicaMHR | 303 comments Well, this weekend did not go as planned. All I wanted to do was read and that just did not happen nearly as much as I wanted. My sister and I took a days long trip to the other side of the island yesterday and then today I just got lost in other things.

Thankfully, it got kinda saved with my audiobook.

I just finished The Two Lives of Lydia Bird and will look to see where I can add it. I had planned it for book with pink we'll see if that is still available.

EDIT* Remembered I was going to use it for book with Silver on the cover because of the author's name.

message 20: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments Another full day, though this time it was all sports-watching, lol. And though my team lost the super bowl, over in the premier league the team I'm way more invested in won their game *decisively* so that more than makes up for it! Anyway, despite all the sports spectating, I read The Sandman, Vol. 4: Season of Mists. and put it in for related to mythology. :)

@ Traci -- that sounds like enough to me, for what it's worth?

message 21: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments Irene wrote: "@J, that book looks super interesting, I had no idea Michael Crichton wrote books like that!"

Crichton was a medical doctor who decided to start writing books. His earlier books are all using his experience to write books from a medical practitioners perspective (he later created and wrote the TV show ER). I read A Case of Need which was written before Roe vs. Wade and deals with a doctor who has to make the tough decision when it was very much illegal to do so.

His first big hit book was The Andromeda Strain, which while marketed as a Sci-fi novel is really still one about doctors. It's about a small town which has an outbreak of a seemingly incurable disease and has to be quarantined.

So yeah, The Great Train Robbery is a bit of an outlier. But I get the impression that he was the type who would read a lot on a subject and then decide to write on that. It is written very analytically, but there isn't a doctor to be seen.

Back on topic I also didn't get much reading done Sunday. I only managed to complete one short story from Night Shift. I am hoping to get at least a hundred pages on that book, so it can count for something. But looking at the list, I have no idea what.

Currently reading The Mating Season by P.G. Wodehouse and The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel García Márquez, because I have them checked out from the library and did not do any planning specifically for this challenge.

Mooseevi (mooseevi) | 16 comments Hi! I’m new here and I’ve never done a read-a-thon but I’m very excited. Could someone catch me up on how this works? Sorry for the inconvenience

message 23: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments Hi Mooseevi! I'm not a captain, but I'll catch you up since I saw this post. We're reading together to try and check off as many prompts as we can. This time, we're trying to earn "beads" for Mardi Gras.

You can click on the link to the team spreadsheet in message 1, where you'll find a bunch of tabs. On the first tab you enter in your daily pages read and hours listened to. These will add up to fill in the pendant prompt for each bead.

On the plans tab, you can include the books you're reading or that are on your TBR, and check off the prompts the book will meet. Sometimes you know in advance, sometimes you learn as you read.

Once you finish a book, you decide which prompt to use, and put the title in the appropriate tab. You also can mark the book as complete, move it from the plans tab to the complete tab, and color the prompt on the plans tab (we're using blue so far) so it's easy to see that a prompt is complete.

Feel free to post here if you need any help!

message 24: by Mooseevi (new)

Mooseevi (mooseevi) | 16 comments Hi Traci,
Thank you so much for filling me in :)

message 25: by Irene (last edited Feb 12, 2024 01:12PM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments @Traci, I totally agree with Roxana, it sounds like it would definitely count for that prompt!

@J, Thanks for the explanation, that's really interesting!

@Mooseevi, welcome!! Traci did a great job filling you in :) The only thing I would add is to please not delete the other options your book fulfills once it's in the completed tab. That way, we can move books around later on if need be since they usually fill more than one prompt. You can do that by leaving the "x" there for every prompt it meets while highlighting the prompt that you are actually using it for.

I added the title of the book you read (The Complete Maus, if I'm not mistaken) to the completed tab - please feel free to change/edit that if someone else read it!

Otherwise, I cleaned up the spreadsheet a bit and color-coded things (hopefully it'll be a little easier to see what prompts we still need in the planned tab). Like everyone else, it seems that I had a busier weekend than anticipated, but I'm almost done with Candide and should be able to start my next book tonight!

message 26: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments @J, which prompt did you want to use The Great Train Robbery for? It looks like you completed it but it's not yet slotted into a particular prompt.

message 27: by J (last edited Feb 12, 2024 04:20PM) (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments Right? I think the prompt it fits best is the crime one

- A book whose main character breaks a law.

message 28: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments Hope everyone is having a good Monday. I got started on the audiobook of Seven Days in June today will pick the ebook later. Hoping that I will finish it tomorrow.

message 29: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 231 comments Not much to check in with today -- reading time was limited. I did listen to 2.5 hours of my audio book while I was prepping things after school today. I hope to finish something else tomorrow.

message 30: by JessicaMHR (new)

JessicaMHR | 303 comments Did an OK amount of reading today. Get some more pages read in Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones and also finished the audiobook of Call Us What We Carry: Poems. It was only about two and a half hours so still not much. I used it for book with blue on cover.

message 31: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments I meant to finish Lunar Love today but not quite; I'll probably finish it either before falling asleep or pretty early tomorrow! At the moment I think it'll probably be a best fit for the source of light prompt. Hoping to get lots more reading time in tomorrow (famous last words...but really, lol).

message 32: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments I'm on track to finish The Mating Season today. Night Shift and The Autumn of the Patriarch will take a bit longer.

I tend to read one audiobook, one physical, and one eBook at a time. I'm looking to start a new audiobook. It might be good to have an idea which prompt(s) to target.

message 33: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments I'm hoping to finish 2 books today.
Finch House - purple maybe (I think her jacket is purple? see below), or else author name in Blue.
Finch House by Ciera Burch
How the Word is Passed - probably someone travels to another state/country.

I can confirm I'll be starting a book where someone plays an instrument next.

@J it's a bit tough to know. I usually target those with low number of options on the planning tab, especially if all the options are TBR or have other prompts they can also fit. If there's not a slot open for your book once you finish it, we can always start another round.

message 34: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 231 comments I’ll finish my book that has a body of water on the cover later tonight.

message 35: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments It sounds like everyone is making great progress! @Katherine and @Jessica, 2.5 hours is fantastic :)

@everyone, do you consider beverages to be food items? I have a few books with cups of tea/coffee on the cover but am on the fence above whether that should count as food.

Otherwise, I'm in-progress with a book where someone goes to a hotel (The Maid) and will probably start another book later today if all goes well!

message 36: by Mooseevi (new)

Mooseevi (mooseevi) | 16 comments @everyone, do you consider beverages to be food items?

I would, as it is still something you consume

message 37: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments I wad thinking that it did not qualify. I'm also finding beverages on covers far more common.

Might be worth asking it in the main thread.

message 38: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments Good idea, I just posted in the FAQs thread! It's extra confusing when it's something like a teapot or coffee cup without the liquid inside actually being visible.

message 39: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 904 comments Emily said yes! That'll definitely make that prompt easier to tackle :)

message 40: by Samantha (last edited Feb 13, 2024 04:46PM) (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments I finished Seven Days in June and put it under spicy.

I started on Heartstopper: Volume One and should finish it tonight.

I am not sure what I am going to read after that. I think I can listen to Chain-Gang All-Stars on Spotify so will probably do that and find another book I can read with my eyes. I will see if I can find anything with food on the cover.

message 41: by Robin H-R (new)

Robin H-R Holmes Richardson (acetax) | 957 comments The book I'm currently reading has a totally purple cover. Will probably finish it tomorrow.

message 42: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments Finished Lunar Love last night and The Exception to the Rule earlier today. The former was kind of a dud for me, but the latter was very cute and sweet. I put them on source of light and travel to another state, respectively.

I've got a few more hours of my audio reread of The Midnight Bargain, and I'm not sure what to pick up right now for non-audio reading... I have a book club meeting this weekend to discuss Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, and I haven't even started it. So the answer should be that. but. . ....well, we'll see, lol.

message 43: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments I have a book with food on the cover, but was going to listen to the instrument book first. I guess I could read the Violin Conspiracy (since I also have the book) and listen to Fake it Till You Bake it. Not sure what I'll do, but no need to read a book you don't want to for food on the cover since I have one I'll get to by the end of the week. Obviously if someone wants to read one, go for it!

message 44: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 231 comments @ Traci--I highly recommend The Violin Conspiracy!

message 45: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments The Fortunes of Jaded Women by Carolyn Huynh The Fortunes of Jaded Women A Novel by Carolyn Huynh does it look like they are picking apples in the up corner of the first cover? Are those oranges on the second?

message 46: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments I loved both the Violin Conspiracy and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Hope you guys enjoy as much as I did!

message 47: by Traci (new)

I'd say the second is definitely fruit, not sure on the first.

message 48: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments Katherine wrote: "@ Traci--I highly recommend The Violin Conspiracy!"

I'm definitely reading it, just need to decide on audio vs. physical. There were a bunch of copies at the library so I have it in both formats right now.

Roxana (luminate) | 767 comments Samantha wrote: "The Fortunes of Jaded Women by Carolyn Huynh The Fortunes of Jaded Women A Novel by Carolyn Huynh does it look like they are picking apples in the up corner of the first cover? Are those o..."

Definitely oranges on the second cover. I think the first one is picking fruit, too, cause you can see some of them in the basket as well as on the trees and in the reaching person's hand. (Since it's the same book, my guess would be it's the same kind of fruit on both, tbh, but I haven't read it so I don't know if that's actually plot-relevant at all.)

message 50: by Samantha (last edited Feb 13, 2024 09:04PM) (new)

Samantha | 1565 comments I will get started on Fortunes of Jaded Women. It was already in my plans but just noticed the fruit when I was looking at covers so works out well.
