Raven Silverburg (ravensilverburg) | 35 comments For me personally, I don't like it. especially if it is a fantasy series (eg fourth wing)or there is such a huge cliffhanger that I literally cannot read another book (eg Haunting Adeline). so I would rather wait a few years for all the books to come out before I jump into that universe.

I also feel like I may even forget half the book by the time the next part comes along and then I would have to read the previous book first and continue the series which I think its pointless. but that's just my opinion. what do you guys think?

cligg hangers- yay or nay?

message 2: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Roth | 17 comments Nay! Cliffhangers are one of my pet peeves! I prefer standalone books, so I try to look in the review section for “cliffhanger” to help me avoid them. I understand if an author’s writing a series, he/she wants readers to buy the subsequent books, and thinks cliffhangers make readers do just that!

Artemis~Ebonie (Inactive) | 65 comments NO! I hate it so much because then I feel forced to read the next book

message 4: by Svetlana (new)

Svetlana | 6 comments Actually, it's a yay from me, as long as it's continued in another book. I like cliffhangers as they're motivation to continue the series and they illicit emotions like shock and dismay, which is pretty uncommon to occur every day irl :)

message 5: by Sharni (new)

Sharni Stein | 16 comments Ooh thats a tough one. My favourite cliffhanger was Prophecy of a Vampire. The book was so good, so exciting and so unique. I wanted to read more. The cliffhanger was actually perfect because there must be a sequel in the works.

Natalia (nataliarr99) | 13 comments It´s okay if they continue to explain that in a saga, also I don´t quite like it.
But when it´s standalone that ends and they use it to capture you to read the next books that it´s another saga but are connected it´s too much.

message 7: by maja (new)

maja | 151 comments if theres another book in the series it's ok bit if it's a complete standalone then no

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 125 comments I like them if it's in a series.

message 9: by Gypsy (new)

Gypsy (ignited_red_queen) | 25 comments I don't mind if its in a series and it's actually continued on well in the next book. Some books do not do this well and it's annoying.

message 10: by Susanne (new)

Susanne | 102 comments I really hate them! If they finish the current story arc of that book (eg the murder is solved) but there's an underlying story arc that continues through the series (eg the MC's personal issues) that's okay. But if the book ends and even the current story arc isn't done, then it's a big turn off for me. Nothing worse than turning the page just to find you need to buy the next book to actually finish the story.

message 11: by sab (new)

sab | 46 comments i'll act like i hate it, but it adds to everything. personally i think it depends, but if done properly and in the right circumstances cliffhangers will send me into a spiral and while it is painful and heart wrenching it is one of my favorite things ever. call me masochist, cliffhangers make my brain run at 100mph and i love the thrill.

message 12: by Maja (new)

Maja | 61 comments If all the books are already released, I don't have a problem with it, if not, I hate the wait

message 13: by Anne (new)

Anne Esp Mass (anneespmass) | 63 comments They better have the sequel ready by the time I finished that cliff hanger!!!

message 14: by Shelton (new)

Shelton | 15 comments Really really annoying

message 15: by Shelton (new)

Shelton | 15 comments unless it's a series

Gina Marie ~books are my drug of choice~ | 9 comments If they are a mild cliffhanger between books in a series they are fine but I absolutely hate them in duets and trilogies where the entire group is not available when I find book 1. Hate even more when I discover I am reading book 2 in one of these without realizing this is what it is and haven’t read book 1 so am confused more often or not. Many of my favorite series I started reading not with book 1 but with whatever book was in the bestseller section at the store. Then I went back and got the every book leading up to the book I bought. I started Kim Harrison’s The Hollows with book 4. That was actually the first book in the second collection of stories that I found online from a book club. Got the first 7 books in hardcover for less than $20 by ordering from a book club. Most book clubs have gone away but you can still order from Literary guild and One Spirit online.

message 17: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Rose | 89 comments I like it cause it gives me the excitement of making my own theories as to what will happen next. The only reason I don’t like them is if the book/series(tv shows do it too) isn’t getting more and it gets cancelled

message 18: by becs (new)

becs | 178 comments i actually don't mind it if the book is a part of a series, BUT if its a stand alone, thats a big no no for me lol...like for example, the invisible life of addie larue??

message 19: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessacumberlandcountypa) I'm better with them now that I'm older and if a series I expect it.

message 20: by Jocie (new)

Jocie C | 10 comments I have a love-hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love them because most cliffhangers give you a rush of intense feeling and I always rate a book by how I feel about it when I finish. However, I'm not too fond of it when there is a cliffhanger and the next book is not out yet. Like right now I am reading Iron Flame, I know it will end with a cliffhanger and we do not even know when the next one is coming. I am dreading and terrified to reach the end.

message 21: by Kai's (new)

Kai's Darling | 660 comments crap. cliffhangers?? No!! I'd rather only not mind if the series is complete, if it's not no (eg powerless) did I still read it? yes. do I regret it? idk. am I waiting for the next book? obviously

message 22: by Philmore (new)

Philmore Olazo (philmore_olazo) | 23 comments Hate it

message 23: by Audrey (new)

Audrey Adams | 39 comments Depends. If I already have the next book on my shelf then I love it because of the suspense, but if I have to wait it’s absolute torture.

message 24: by Robert (new)

Robert Robertson (trk06) | 52 comments No I like a story to be resolved . It's slightly different if it's a series as long as the next book is available .
Game of Thrones is a perfect example of where readers have just been left hanging .

message 25: by Amy (new)

Amy J | 20 comments Fourth Wing.... and then Iron Flame...and I have NO CLUE WHEN THE THIRD ONE IS COMING OUT!!!!

message 26: by Kie (new)

Kie (kie06) | 96 comments if the books are already all released and i can read the next book right after, then I'm fine. But if I have to wait a whole year just to find out what happens next i literally lose my mind

message 27: by Surajat Debbie (new)

Surajat Debbie It depends on how the author releases them. Ending a book on a cliffhanger when the next one will take over a year to come out is annoying. Not only because I want to know what happens next, but because over time the story becomes less interesting and easy to forget sometimes. Overall, I love a good cliffhanger but ONLY if done right and it doesn’t take too long for the next book.

message 28: by James (new)

James Joyce (james_patrick_joyce) | 16 comments As long as the book has a contained story, with a beginning, middle, and end, I don't mind a cliff-hanger regarding "further adventures".

I've noted that a lot of YA seems to end the current story in a cliffhanger, so that you are left with nothing, except a goad to "read more SPEND MORE", in the hopes of some kind of ending.

I think this arises when an author (or publisher) wants a series, but the idea only covers a single book. Stretch that out and you don't have enough reveals and sub-plots to expand on... and you get cheap cliffhangers.

I'm not reading any more from any author who leaves me dangling, at the end. It's extremely cheap.

End the current part of the story and leave the hero dangling, at the entrance to the next story. Cool.

message 29: by Jessi (new)

Jessi Blackmon | 3 comments It's both yay and nay for me! It truly depends on the book! I feel most books I've been like "yes I love a cliff hanger!" because then I'm super excited for what will be next! I haven't read a book yet where I didn't like a cliff hanger but I think soon maybe I'll run into a book that I'm like "WHYYYYYYY"! I also love being on the edge of my seat and in that like "Oh my gosh what's gonna happen now?!"

message 30: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (quakerwidow) | 155 comments Hate them and usually dock half a star unless exceptionally well written (ie: no editing required on my part).

message 31: by Dee (last edited Feb 18, 2024 11:11AM) (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments Cliffhangers exist for one reason only: to bait the reader into investment in the sequel. It's a worse manipulation even than Amazon through Goodreads pushing us to read a certain number of books per year as a form of competition, but really just to buy more books--all hail end stage capitalism! UGH

The worst has been Delemhach's The Burning Witch. They had to create a deus ex machina character, yes, the devil's son, to pull it off. It was a miserable fail--they've published what, 5 books in a year??? But what made it truly awful is that the first two books, The House Witch and ITS sequel, were lovely. They could have sparked a whole new push in literature based on kindness and doing what's right. The Burning Witch tanked all that, and it's obviously only to SELL SELL SELL.

message 32: by Pisces51 (new)

Pisces51 The answer is yes and no. Yes, I hate cliffhangers in serial thrillers due to wait time to read the next installment. In The Fourth Monkey, part two was available but I waited forever and practically had to read the first book again. Only then did I read Part 3 of the trilogy. The answer could be no. In a standalone where I am favoring or desperately want a particular outcome, but the option for a horrible ending is also on the table, let it hang out there. I will finish it in my head.

message 33: by Rae (new)

Rae | 3 comments I personally hate it, not because it's not good, but because im not satisfied with the ending. there should be more 😭

message 34: by Jasmina (new)

Jasmina (vjecnisanjar) | 9 comments Love-hate relationship. I love it only if I have the next book of it already there with me, hate it if I have to wait or if it's a standalone.

message 35: by hannah (new)

hannah | 1 comments Love hate for sure, for example the empyrean series. We now have to wait for the other books to come out and yes i’d definitely forget important notes from the books and etc. But also at the same time i wouldn’t mind rereading these books before the release of the next one!

message 36: by Kar (new)

Kar love-hate relationship with any cliffhanger
