The book you like most discussion

be honest - do you judge a book by its cover when browing for a new read or do you genuinely take the time to read the overview first, to see if you like it?

becs | 178 comments not going to lie, i sometimes will dismiss a book just by the cover, or if i know its from a genre i dont like because i am strictly YA/fantasy reader for the most part

Deborah Durand | 29 comments I agree with both of you. If I don’t like the cover, I’m not going to read the synopsis. The covers I despise are those that look like children’s art or caricatures. What I really hate is when an ebook that I purchased has its cover altered into that sh**! Ugh! 😩

Morgan Rose | 89 comments It depends. I actually judge a book by the title sometimes. If it doesn’t catch my eye then I skip.

Artemis~Ebonie (Inactive) | 65 comments If I see a cover that looks exciting I'll pick it up and read the synopsis but if I were to see a book with just a plain blue cover I'd probably walk right by unless the title looked interesting. So yes and no because even if it has a cool cover doesn't mean I'll read it.

Pluto | 45 comments I am judgy and picky.

I firmly believe that if an author really likes their book they will take time to meet with a cover artist and truly make the book beautiful.
This is also something that is going to be on a bookshelf forever because I don't borrow books, I commit.

So if its gonna be on my bookshelf its gotta be pretty.
But then I'll read the synopsis and if I don't like it I'll put it back anyways lol.

MY_BOOKISH_ALTEREGO | 9 comments Definitely, always and genuinely take the time to read the overview to know about the plot, any historical background and the characters. Sometimes and about authors I haven't read before, I do read also their biography. ;)

Kawaii Suzuke | 22 comments If the cover or title isn't appealing I will usually ignore the book ;;

Jo Kerr | 76 comments A cover that catches my eye when browsing will be the book I pick up to read the synopsis.

However if I’ve researched what to read and know what I’m looking for I will buy regardless of cover.

So cover only really makes a difference to me when browsing…

Children's book covers and illustrations in the 1940's to 1960's were little master pieces. So beautiful!
If I look at new children's books these days in book stores, they either come without illustrations at all or they look as if the kids themselves have drawn them.
What happened to the art of children's books illustrations?

sab | 46 comments guilty of judging a book by its cover!!! if a book has an ugly cover, i won't spare it a second glance, if the cover is appealing to the eye, i'll give it a chance and see if the synopsis is as appealing. now if i get recommended a book and i see and love the synopsis first, even if the cover is bad i'll read it, i just would not spare it a second glance otherwise. i'm like a child who hates vegetables.

message 11: by Lance (new)

Lance | 48 comments yeah but then I read the blurb and see if it actually sounds good

message 12: by Lady Grace (new)

Lady Grace | 82 comments I definitely will judge a book by it's cover. mostly I avoid books that have real people on the cover or have covers that have cheesy vibes

message 13: by ella ☆*: (new)

ella ☆*: | 11 comments 😭like sometimes i won’t even read the blurb if the cover is bad because who’s gonna take me seriously when i’m reading a book with a shirtless man as a cover. come on

message 14: by Dana (new)

Dana Craig (secondgeneration) | 11 comments I'm a cover snob. I won't pick up a book to even look at it if the cover doesn't appeal to me, with the exception of the authors I always read. I probably miss a lot of good books. I do read the synopsis, inside cover, back. Pay no attention to reviews. I really dislike the newer covers with the cartoonish/line drawings and not really attracted to the very bright covers.

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 127 comments I will look at covers to see if they are interesting but don't usually judge a book that way.

message 16: by Maya (new)

Maya Sheppard (mayasheppard) | 2 comments I look at the cover and the title first and then read the synopsis. Realistically speaking, the cover is the first thing you see when you pick up a new book, anyway, so the whole point of it is to make us want to open the book, and if the cover isn't interesting enough to catch your eye, then it's failed in its purpose.

Ricki Brodie | 5 comments I have so many books coming in through emails as suggested reading that I would spend all my time reading overviews rather than actual reading. Therefore, I use covers to help weed out certain genres of books. For example, I do not read Rom-Coms (no judging please). I can quickly skip light fanciful covers. I do the same with self-help and biographies. I do read selected reviewers and if someone recommended something in a non favored category, the cover is the fastest was I can eliminate books. I read overviews before I read anything. My goal is tonget back to reading!

I feel the same way. If a book title makes me cringe, I probably won't read it.

message 19: by Emma (new)

Emma | 112 comments The only time I judged a book by its cover, I ended up reading one of the worst books I've ever read. I'll stick to the synopsis :).

message 20: by Carol (new)

Carol Engler It depends more on subject. If it a romcom I most likely will pass. But I do pick up books because of there covers. If they look interesting I will check it out. But if the cover is a mess I will walk passed it.

message 21: by Annika (new)

Annika | 81 comments I mostly read ebooks so I don't care for the cover at all.

message 22: by ali (new)

ali | 76 comments when I'm looking to borrow a book from the library yes, but i only buy books after putting a lot of research into them. for e books it really just depends :)

message 23: by Kai's (new)

Kai's Darling | 661 comments honestly? I'm not bothered to read overview, if I don't like the cover or title it's a no, no, for me

message 24: by luna ♡ (new)

luna ♡ | 53 comments yes, if a book is aparently super good then ill try to find an alternate cover for it but some covers i just cannot get behind. and I'm not saying it always has to be cute and aesthetic I'm just saying that i like the covers of my books to look tasteful

message 25: by ❁ Ashton ❀ (new)

❁ Ashton ❀ (readbyash) | 52 comments I sometimes judge the cover and I'm mostly wrong! But tbh the synopsis is what draws me in i will ignore the cover. Sometimes the cover just doesn't match and it puts me off

message 26: by maja (new)

maja | 151 comments Sometimes I judge a book by its cover because if the cover doesn’t speak to me I don’t read the back

ʚ manvi°•✮•° | 71 comments its always that the first thing to attract is cover, if it goes with my vibe then I read the synopsis.

message 28: by erindreads (new)

erindreads | 10 comments Honestly both. If I like the way a book looks I’ll buy it but make sure to skim the summary to make sure I’ll actually invest time in reading it.
