BeanSchnitzz | 19 comments Hello, lovebugs; I am putting romance on the backburner right now. Trying to satiate my reading challenge without reading solely smut is proving to be a challenge...

Should I read The Secret History by Donna Tartt, My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, or People Collide by Isle McElroy?

If you have any fiction/nonfics recs, help a woman!

Oh, haven't read any of those. But would recommend The Painter by Peter Heller

I tend to be genre-driven. I appreciate both, so I'm open to anything!

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 212 comments I just finished reading The Fire in the Glass (The Charismatics, #1) by Jacquelyn Benson which was an excellent mystery. No smut.

Or try this The Yellowstone Convergence by S.L. Hansen which is another great smut free story.

Both have fantasy elements.

Or try this series the first book being The Ark (Children of a Dead Earth Book 1) by Patrick S. Tomlinson

✨ Kayla Lynne ✨ (princess_of_pages) | 4 comments Do you read historical fantasy? I just finished The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden which comes out this month and it was SO amazing! It's slow-paced but just genuinely one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read.

Aly (lyanarty) | 42 comments The Secret History for sure!

message 10: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Durand | 29 comments What! Abandoning smut! Well, since it’s temporary. You’re forgiven
For nonfiction: Isaac’s Storm - about the great hurricane of 1900 that killed thousands when Galveston flooded
Ghost stories - humorous with murder mystery - Tarah Benner’s books
Ghost with romance (non smut) - Brush With Death by Elizabeth Blake, poignant and tragic
Murder mysteries in general - Preston and Child’s books
Fantasy - any Sarah J Maas book - starting with A Court of Thorns and Roses “ACOTAR”.

I've read EVERY John Grisham book and love them all. I think A Time to Kill and A Time for Mercy are among the best. Don't miss those too. The Firm is also a classic.

I haven't read any of the three that you mentioned as possibilities.

Hyun wrote: "I'm reading The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka right now and it's great!"

I agree with Hyun, The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a great pick for a read. It's creative, intriguing and thought provoking.

Some recent reads that I really enjoyed include:

a ghost story, that has a bit of a love story within it Bag of Bones

an Arthurian trilogy, that has some love interests, that starts with The Winter King

a historical fiction set in WWII with a romantic interest The Book of Lost Names

a thriller that I unexpectedly really liked Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre

and finally, so that I am not giving you an entire book of suggestions, if you enjoy magical realism, this book has a bit of romance but also the main character is just a kind and loving soul, who gives so much of herself to others The Wishing Game

Whichever you pick, I hope that you really enjoy your trip outside of your regular reading selections!
