Carro | 216 comments So I love T Kingfisher. Recently read Nettle and Bone several times. Looking at a list of "if you like Nettle and Bone you'll like these" Stephen King was included on the list. I've not got on with Stephen King in the dim and distant past (long before T Kingfisher started publishing). So does anyone think that any of Stephen King's book would appeal in a Nettle and Bone sort of way? And which one?

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments This is just a guess, but I think it's more likely that people who read Nettle & Bone, a very popular fantasy book, have also read King, a very popular (horror) author. It's been very long since I last read anything by King, but the only similarity between these two authors in my mind is that they both write books that can be categorized as (different types of) horror.

Someone who has read more King more recently, please correct me if I'm wrong!

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments (May I suggest The Path of Thorns by A.G. Slatter/Angela Slatter instead? In general Slatter's writing has less humor and feels darker, bordering more on horror at times, but lives in the same darker fantasy about women space in my brain.)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I've read a LOT of Stephen King (though have stopped reading him over the last several years because I've been disappointed), but only one book by Kingfisher (The Hollow Places) and I am struggling to think of a King book that has a similar tone/feel. MAYBE Lisey's Story? But it's a bit of a stretch, and I'm really just basing it on the alternate dimension, scary things there, and grieving family member going through the deceased's stuff bits.

I have not read Nettle and Bone, but looking at the description, you MAY like The Talisman - it's a fantasy/horror quest coming of age about a 12 year old who must save his mother, and her corresponding person in an alternate dimension. Don't let the 12 year old protagonist aspect turn you off. It's very much an adult themed book. (If that's a concern.)

Thanks. I was wondering that. I am not a very dedicated horror reader, it is more reading everything by authors I like.

Thank you both for your recommendations, I will go add to the list.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3184 comments I don't think their works are at all similar. I really like T. Kingfisher's characters and sense of humor, but Stephen King's books don't have the same feel at all.

Sarah | 3180 comments The closest Stephen King has to Nettle & Bone is Fairy Tale.

And I can definitely see why that comparison was made.

But no other works of his that I’ve read really compare. King is a Horror writer and intends to scare/disturb/gross out.

Whereas Kingfisher’s horror has a cozier vibe (of the two I’ve read, which is Hollow Places and nettle and bone.)

And you're the unofficial horror expert, Sarah, so you would certainly know :)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Agree, they aren't really comparable. The recommendation engine is often super vague and weird with what it recommends. Probably it is just as Anna says - both are popular authors tagged as horror/fantasy.

I stand by my recommendation for both King books I mentioned though. They are good. The Talisman has been a favorite for years. :)

Rick | 260 comments Look folks, they both have "King" in their names, they must be similar!

And... it wouldn't surprise me if this was what happened,....

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Yeah, Ursula Vernon (aka. T. Kingfisher) is fishing for King fans XD

Honestly, based on some of his recent books' "quality", they'd do well to be caught!

You could be onto something there, Rick! We all know how spot-on the GR recs can be!
