Master of Longbourn: A Sequel to Mr. Darcy's Comfort by Leenie Brown (5 stars)
An endearing Mr. Collins and a Kitty who finds herself.

Larry Bond is near clairvoyant as some of his other books of similar ilk has, in some way, come to pass. I suppose politics can be very predictable.

I'll say.

I was not quite sure what to expect with this book about the rebellion led by Queen Boudica of the Iceni against the Romans in first century AD Britain. I picked it up because I have enjoyed everything I have read by Kate Quinn, so thought I would try it. I thought with seven different authors, it might be disjointed and not very cohesive - I was wrong. Each author wrote a part of the story of the year of rebellion, but each wrote from a different character's perspective. All the character's appear in each section and the story arc flows very well.
The novel begins with the events that triggered the rebellion - the death of Boudica's husband and his funeral that ended with Boudica being flogged and her daughters raped by the soldiers of Rome. We are then taken through the rising of the rebellion, the march through Britain, the desecration of Mona (the sacred island of the druids), the final battle and Boudica and her daughters' flight from Roman retribution. We see the rebellion from the perspective of a queen, a slave, an Iceni son who had been sent to be raised by the Romans as a hostage who has now returned to his tribe, a Roman centurion, an Iceni warrior and a Roman woman, a druid, and the daughters of Boudica. I really found it interesting seeing the overlapping Celt and Roman perspectives.
A novel that does not shy away from the brutality of the subject matter and at times could turn the air blue, but one that is enthralling and so very well written.
