Steven Odhner | 6 comments My wife is looking for this one - she read it 20-25 years ago, it's a YA novel about 3-4 kids whose parents have died(?) and don't want to be split up, so they go to live with their aunt. But she has a brain injury, at one point they have to teach her how to write a check. One kid chops her foot while trying to chop firewood.

Some stabs:

To Grandmother's House We Go

To avoid foster home care while their mother is recuperating from illness, three children run off to the home of a grandmother they have never seen, where they find a cold reception and a terrible secret. Their Uncle George seems friendlier, but there is a third, unseen resident, an obscure face at an upstairs window, a visitor in the night, that both their grandmother and their uncle pretend to ignore.

The Village by the Sea

When her father enters the hospital to have open-heart surgery, ten-year-old Emma is sent to Peconic Bay to live with her tormented aunt and finds the experience painful until she meets a friend who suggests making a miniature village in the sand.

All of these are from 20 or more years ago.
