ABANDONED. Kids go to live with brain damaged aunt

My wife is looking for this one - she read it 20-25 years ago, it's a YA novel about 3-4 kids whose parents have died(?) and don't want to be split up, so they go to live with their aunt. But she has a brain injury, at one point they have to teach her how to write a check. One kid chops her foot while trying to chop firewood.
