Welcome to our Feb/March 24 buddy read A Case of Perplexity in Piccadilly A Case of Perplexity in Piccadilly (Freddy Pilkington-Soames Adventures #7) by Clara Benson Published in 2022 this is the seventh, and currently last, book in the Freddy Pilkington-Soames series so another series we have finished.

West End theatre impresario Septimus Gooch is a man with many enemies, but when he's found dead in his leading lady's dressing-room the police put it down to an accident.

The cast of Septimus's latest musical production at the Jollity Theatre are having none of it, however—this is the second mysterious death in two months, and they're convinced Septimus died after being frightened out of his wits by the ghost that's haunted the theatre ever since it burned to the ground many years ago. A malevolent spirit is on the loose, striking them down one by one. Which of them will be next?

Press-man Freddy Pilkington-Soames was backstage at the Jollity on the night Septimus died. He doesn't believe in ghosts, but he knows a suspicious death when he sees one—and when a third person dies there's no doubt this time that a human hand was behind it.

Freddy's fending off the attentions of several chorus-girls at once, so has his own distractions to contend with. But murder's no joke, and he'll do anything he can to catch the killer before the whole production falls apart.

After all, the show must go on.

Please do not post spoilers in this thread. Thank you.

Thank you for creating the threads, Susan. Who is reading this one? I've just started listening to the audiobook on Spotify and am enjoying it so far - looking forward to another light mystery starring Freddy.

Just a shame this is the last one in the Freddy series as yet (though there is another Angela Marchmont book, The Body on Archangel Beach, which was published last summer.)

To be honest, I am pleased that I have now finished this series. I don't think it has improved.

However, if anyone wants me to add the new Angela Marchmont list to our buddy reads, let me know.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5048 comments Same here, Susan, it was fluffy and light, and I always listened while knitting, so really don’t remember much. Always gave me a “Bertie Wooster investigates” vibe! Not a bad thing, just not terribly engrossing or memorable!

Yes, like the Ocean mysteries, you listen, you forget. Not sure what else to say about this one!

lol, ah well, there’s plenty of news and current events we listen to and CAN’T forget, so I guess something innocuous and innocent is pleasant to listen to sometimes! ;o)

I used to feel that way, but I think I am a little more demanding now and I am unsure why often such poor series get so many books. It makes me wonder if book buyers just keep up with a series through habit?!

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I think maybe some characters you sort of click with. Freddy seemed fun at the start, him pushing a dead man through the street, away from his mother’s house, but from then he sort of lost it.

I think I liked him better in the Angela Marchmont stories, where he popped in and out.

I definitely think this is part of it - they like the ‘sameness’ I think, because they want the same rather insipid satisfaction with each read - it’s really like rereading the same book over and over again! I don’t get it, either, there are so many cozy series out there, I’ve tried a few, but they were so lame in writing, characters, dialogue, plot I just couldn’t bring myself to waste my time! I’d rather reread Christie, Sayers or continue with the reissues of Lorac, Dalton, Bellairs, etc., so many more that are becoming available. Plus newer mystery writers.

Excellent point - yes, the first really had a Bertie Wooster silliness that was fun. After that, meh…I’ve read many series, I’m sure we all have, that were uneven-I think it’s tough to launch and establish a new series and keep it moving forward.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I think the writing out of Corky was a mistake. The competition between them was interesting.

Thanks, I wanted to mention him, but wasn’t sure of his name - he kept things interesting, as did the girl with the Italian name who I thought would be a love interest , but turned out to be a jewel thief, I think? Not sure, but she was funny and intriguing.

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Yes I was hoping they would run in to each other again.

Michaela | 542 comments I´ll read this too, but haven´t started yet, so please no spoilers!
I liked the first in the series best, but the others weren´t as good. Looking ahead to see what I´ll think about this one.

I'm about halfway through and enjoying it, but I'm finding the audiobook narrator, Gethyn Edwards, a bit annoying - his upper-crust accent is rather over the top imo. I've been listening to some parts on Spotify while doing housework, but am also reading the ebook.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5048 comments Oh, definitely he always sounds like he has lockjaw! Him I won’t miss…
