Christine Mathieu | 948 comments When I started working in October 1990 at the movie archives in Hamburg, Germany, I checked their David Janssen file in my lunch break and read an article from the early 1980's on a planned book on DJ by two authors who also had written an excellent biography on Marilyn Monroe.
Unfortunately the DJ biography never was published. :( :( :(

Christine Mathieu | 948 comments The other book was "After The Reunion" by Rona Jaffe. A few years prior I had read the first volume "Class Reunion" and found out via fïche at the university library that Jaffe had written a sequel (these were the pre-Internet times). So I ordered this book through a German bookstore in the spring of 1991 and read "After the Reunion" with the help of a huge English_German Langenscheidt dictionary throughout that summer, every day a chapter during my lunch break.
I expected it was good.
It was so great that I wrote to Jaffe's German publisher and asked them to translate the sequel also into German like they had done with volume 1, but they were not interested. :(

Kimiko | 23 comments Twelve years ago, I went to Buenos Aires for a week long trip. On the way home, since I do not speak Spanish, I had to take a bus along with another American (who does speak Spanish) to get to the airport about 5 hours early. I brought paperback books to read but quickly ran through them. Stuck in the airport for hours with NO book is NOT an option. I went into the gift store and found some books written in English for $27 and $32 respectively...purchased 2. I would not usually ever spend that kind of money for paperback books in English but when you are *desperate*, you will do what needs to be done! :-)

Honestly do not remember the titles from 12 years ago (especially since I read 100 books or so per year). But it was worth it to me, at that time.

Helen Pasiali | 2 comments I did nt drink coffee for a day, because my son promised me a book I loved, so I made this huuuuge sacrifice and didn't enjoy one of my favourite things in life for a whole Sunday... I can't say it was worth it, because I could buy it for myself but it was just a bet between a mother and her 17 y old son, so I had to win this! :-D

Cary | 46 comments Hard to believe it was over 16 years ago, July 2007. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had a midnight release party at my local Barnes and Noble. I joined the glorious summer madness along with hundreds of (or likely more than a thousand) others, arriving several hours early in order to buy a copy for my young nephew who was traveling at the time. Hogwarts uniforms, trivia games, face painting, butterbeer, and wands magically took over the store. Everywhere you turned there was another Harry, Hermione, Ron, or Draco. The excitement peaked at 12:00 when the book became available and your turn to obtain it depended on the color of your wristband. Up until then, I hadn’t read any of the HP series. That night changed my mind, and I devoured each book soon after that. I believe it also earned me the title of being a good uncle. I wish every book lover could experience such an event for a book they love.

message 18: by Surajat Debbie (new)

Surajat Debbie I’d just gotten back into reading a few years ago and started a new fantasy series The Bridge Kingdom. The first book ended in such a way that I JUST HAD TO get the second instalment. But for some reason I couldn’t find it anywhere and I didn’t want to order cause I wanted it right that second! I reserved it at a Waterstones like 2 hours from me and went to get it first thing the next day. This was before my kindle and don’t have to wait to buy physical books anymore hahaha
