Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments I've found that some old books or classics have sequels but the authors [now deceased] don't appear to have assigned an official name to the series. How can we create a series page in this case?

Edit: I found this old thread https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... I guess we can make up a name for it. Not sure if this still applies as the thread is from 2012.

Melanie (mvalente89) | 2197 comments The times I've come across these types of series, I've noticed the series is usually named whatever the title of the first book is. Occasionally I'll see them as the main character's name or even the place where they're set if it's unique but I'm not sure if there's an official policy of what to choose for the name.

Tami (tamicarvallo) | 6987 comments Thanks Melanie! I think the title of the first book makes a lot of sense.

I added Att. Jaclyn for an official response on the policy.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments I've used the name of the main character, but I can change if there is a definite ruling.

Hi everyone. There isn't an official policy here, and I believe the main character's name or the name of the original book is fine. Would this group prefer to have a set rule?

I can add this to the Manual.

I'd rather a little freedom.

For example https://www.goodreads.com/series/3842...

The names of the books don't make it clear that these are Park's memoirs.

Olga Silvertongue (olgasilvertongue) | 6723 comments I usually check publishers' sites. When old books are reprinted many times, publishers often give them titles.

That's a great example. I agree that a little freedom could help in such cases. I had not seen one before so didn't think of it.

Thanks for sharing.

Great, happy to suggest that Librarians check publishers' sites to see if a series name has been allocated. If there isn't one, Librarians can use the main character's name or the name of the original book.

Thank you so much, Jaclyn!

Confirming that I've added this information to the Librarian Manual: Adding books to a new or existing series page. 😊

Closing thread.
