I expected it to be about the difficulties and burdens of the time period, whatever they may be; but have I not spent enough time with Mr. Dunbar to know that he would present something entertaining?

This poem is about Thanksgiving and all of its anticipations that tickle your senses: from the cool weather to south-flying geese, walnuts and hickory nuts falling from trees, apples and the sound of the apple cider press squeaking, children finding eggs in the yard and pumpkin ripening. Even the smells from the kitchen tell all that Thanksgiving is coming.

The farmer makes his rounds to see all is coming along. But that turkey doesn't know what's coming; he does a lot of strutting and gobbling.

Until one day, he stopped gobbling...
