Book 2 Yellowface
Book 3 Babel Fantasy, with the contemporary pairing with Yellowface above"
Apologies, I just saw that these are mostly approve already!
For book 3 - would Absolution (with a Fantasy MPG) work, paired with At Weddings and Wakes - with a Contemporary MPG?

For Present day:Northwoods
For Past ; The Curse of Penryth Hall
Thanks,
Andy"
Those two look fine.

Book 1 The Pull of the Stars
The Pull of the Stars looks fine for historical. I wondered if anyone would use the contemporary book of the Option 3 pair for the contemporary prompt. That's fine too - just link to this post when you claim the task.

I see nothing in the description of Absolution that suggests it's a Fantasy book, despite it having the Fantasy MPG, and I'm not seeing fantasy elements mentioned in the first few reviews, which seem to pretty soundly have it as Historical Fiction. Where do the Fantasy elements come into it?

Can a get a check on Book 3 options.
I thinking Elevation for the fantasy MPG, and Misery for the "present day" non-fantasy.
To confirm, I only have to read one of the two and just list the other?
Thank you!

That combination looks fine. Yes, you only have to read one and link to the other.

I'm going to check with the mods on this one.

Absolution is approved for the Fantasy side.
Looking closely at At Weddings and Wakes, that one is more of a problem, as "three generations of an Irish-American family through the eyes of its youngest members", and the presence of the Historical Fiction MPG doesn't seem to tie up with "For the "present day" book, there should be nothing in the GR description or setting metadata to indicate that it is set other than around the date at which it was published".
So, it depends which one is your "reading" book and which is the reference to the other genre. If you're reading Absolution, then just find a different book by Alice McDermott for the other one, which is more obviously set around when it as published - there look to be a few.
If you're reading At Weddings and Wakes, then it wouldn't work for this task, unless the whole book is set around 1992.

Thank you for checking. Absolution was my reading book, I'll see if I can find a different contemporary one.

It looks like an interesting book, but I'm afraid not. I'm seeing Historical Fiction as an MPG, which implies that it isn't set in the present day.

Jenna and Billy are in love. He's an app developer, a hyper-plugged-in citizen of the internet . . She is a yoga teacher . .when they can't get pregnant, Billy devises a plan: they would raise funds for their in vitro fertilization on Kickstarter, offering donor perks like cutting the cord, naming the baby, and catching the baby when it takes its first steps. These are certainly contemporary issues and there doesn't seem to be any supernatural element.
Do these work?

Margaret Atwood wrote:
The Handmaid’s Tale : MPG Science Fiction and Fantasy
AND
The Edible Woman : MPG Contemporary, and appears to be set in the mid-20th century (published 1969)
So, would The Handmaid's Tale count for Book 3?

That's my other option if my query above isn't approved, but I was doing it the other way around, reading The Edible Woman.

That combination looks like it works
Apologies for the delay - I've been out of town since Thursday.

That combo works either way around for Option 3.

Thanks so much, I know we can't always stay on top of every inquiry.

Present day: The Gray and Guilty Sea, set in Pacific Northwest in "present day" of publication 2010. This is the book I intend to use for the challenge.
Fantasy: has in this genre authored many short stories, as well as some adult books and some children's books. For example: The Dragon Lottery and Drawing a Dark Way: Rymadoon

Will this work? Thank you.

Hmm. Tricky one. The present day side is fine, but while the GR descriptions of the other two indicate fantasy, neither of them have either Science Fiction or Fantasy as an MPG, so they wouldn't work.
If you can find one of his novels which does list either of those genres, then he's okay.
I might look into reading something by author myself - I love Portland and the Pacific Northwest!

I found a few that say either science fiction, fantasy or science fiction fantasy:

I really liked the one book I read from this author, The Gray and Guilty Sea, and am looking forward to the next in the series.

I don't know if you noticed, but the Myron Vale books are also showing Fantasy and Urban Fantasy.

That's too much of a gap, I'm afraid. The task wording is "for the "present day" book, there should be nothing in the GR description or setting metadata to indicate that it is set other than around the date at which it was published" - and specifying 2000 in the GR description for a 2018 book contradicts that.

Sorry, I realised that I specified novel in the task, and Dinosaur Diaries is a collection of short stories, so you're safer to use something like Ghost Detective as the non-reading book, which has Fantasy. I've given the mods the heads up that I gave you the wrong information.

If you mean for Option 3, then that's fine, as long as you've got the fantasy/SF one to link to with it.
It wouldn't work for Option 2 as it was published too early.

Sorry, yes for option 3. I have a 2021 book for 2. Thanks
