what's your interpretation of cowboy like me?

How do you interpret the story in cowboy like me from evermore? I've heard so many ideas, and would love to hear yours!

I personally think theyre con artists, or shady business people, who tricked themselves into falling in love, but I've heard good cases made for the idea of them being an actual cowboy and cowgirl

Yeah same! Every time I listen to it I picture two con artists falling in love and living together and being happy for a while. Except it doesn't last because they can't help being who they are ("forever is the sweetest con"), so they eventually go their separate ways even though they were probably each other's true love.
However I do think the song is up to so many interpretations, not just in regards to the story, but the scenes it describes. For instance, when the song goes "and the tennis court was covered up with some tent like thing" it makes me think of a wedding tent, and how that might be the place where they first met, but someone else might have a completely different take on that lyric and I think that's part of the beauty of the song!
