so i dont really do it often
but ive dine it a couple times
and theres a couple reasons
1. its very aesthetic to do it, if that makes sens
2. its kinda fun to put colors and stuff in your books
3. it can be really pretty as a result
4. its a really good way to engage with the text
5. it doesnt even have to be like "symbolism." or "metaphors"
it can be just your pure unfiltered thoughts
which are REALLY fun to write down
hope this helps =)

I annotate to remind my future self what I thought about the book at that time. (Now, I highlight in my Kindle and write reviews for the same purpose.) For example, I read Middlemarch in my 30s, when I had not yet embarked upon my chosen career and was alone in the world. Then, I was filled with the same misguided religiosity and angst as Dorothea Brooke! Today, after 33 years of marriage, what I've focused on instead are all of Eliot's spot on, snide remarks disparaging society's most banal conventions--the book's frankly hilarious, now! It took 35 years, but I've changed completely. My annotations showed me my former self and allow me to laugh at the differences. We don't need school to learn.

not really
i dont reallyt annotate
for several reasons
but a major one is that a lot of my books are library books and i dont wriet in those
HOWEVER
i did annotate one of my favorite books, The Outsiders, not too long ago, and it was really fun just writing notes =)

I ..."
This is why I annotate too! I have a copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower that has been with me for over ten years. It has tabs, highlights, stains, etc. I read it every two years and it is incredible with what my younger self thought was worth highlighting (an 18-year-old relating to the moving beyond high school to a 20-year-old experiencing a mental health crisis). Annotating a favorite book that you know you will reread is like a time capsule you open every time you read it.

I might write notes on a notepad if I'll be reviewing it or am reading it for some comprehension or information. I can do this with a paper notepad or with an online notepad for an e-book.

But I think obsessing with aesthetics when annotating takes the fun out of it - so do what makes you happy, it’s your book! Worst comes to worst, use tippex haha!
