message 2: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments yes! i love annotating! i used to do the whole thing with highlighters and page tabs and stuff but now i mostly just use a pen to underline and dog ear any pages i really love! <3

message 3: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments I really want to try it with my favorite book but I don't want to ruin it but I have a book that I thrifted and its not really in the best state and I think I might tab that book since I love it so much

message 4: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments @killua go for it! if you’re super worried about “messing it up” you could use a pencil to underline and write with to start out! and just remember that if you don’t like the final look you can always remove the tabs! :)

message 5: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments yeah, I might post the final result on my youtube channel if I'm doing it.

Martha Welsh | 7 comments I am not being confrontational by asking the following question I truly do not understand. What is the purpose of annotating if you're reading for enjoyment and not for a class?

message 7: by Tanja (new)

Tanja | 315 comments No, absolutely never. It feels like violating the book.
The only exception are textbooks

so i dont really do it often
but ive dine it a couple times

and theres a couple reasons

1. its very aesthetic to do it, if that makes sens
2. its kinda fun to put colors and stuff in your books
3. it can be really pretty as a result
4. its a really good way to engage with the text
5. it doesnt even have to be like "symbolism." or "metaphors"
it can be just your pure unfiltered thoughts
which are REALLY fun to write down

hope this helps =)

message 9: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments @martha welsh sometimes I have quotes in a book I like and be like ohh I find it later but then I can't find it anymore

message 10: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments I'm not planning to write in it but maby I can tab them

message 11: by Killua (new)

Bella(✨❤️Hopeful Romantic❤️✨) | 251 comments NO WRITING IN BOOKS IS BAD AND ANY BOOKS WITH WRITING ARE BAD

message 13: by Sam (new)

Sam | 45 comments I annotate the sht out of my books :)) it feels good and even if I won’t look at them a single time after I read I don’t feel like I’m losing the parts that I loved! Besides it’s pretty!! I don’t write or draw on them tho, That’s a crime! I only annotate with sticky notes

message 14: by Azari (new)

Azari (azarvyx) | 25 comments I tried annotating a book but it's honestly confusing for me, having to rememeber what colors are for what. I think I prefer writing down notes on another book, or just highlighting

message 15: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments I always wonder what if you want to re-read your book won't you get distracted by all the tabs and lines and notes?

Dee Turner | 17 comments Martha wrote: "I am not being confrontational by asking the following question I truly do not understand. What is the purpose of annotating if you're reading for enjoyment and not for a class?"

I annotate to remind my future self what I thought about the book at that time. (Now, I highlight in my Kindle and write reviews for the same purpose.) For example, I read Middlemarch in my 30s, when I had not yet embarked upon my chosen career and was alone in the world. Then, I was filled with the same misguided religiosity and angst as Dorothea Brooke! Today, after 33 years of marriage, what I've focused on instead are all of Eliot's spot on, snide remarks disparaging society's most banal conventions--the book's frankly hilarious, now! It took 35 years, but I've changed completely. My annotations showed me my former self and allow me to laugh at the differences. We don't need school to learn.

message 17: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments Okay, i want to tab the book(paperweight by meg haston) so I will be buying white sticky notes tommorow so I can write on the sticky notes but I'm searching for cheap tabs with the color scheme of that book but I can't find any :'(

message 18: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments @killua amazon has cheap sticky tabs that come in like every color! :)

message 19: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments @jonesy I've been searching but I can't afford $10 for tabs right now and I don't know which ones are good :`(

message 20: by luna ♡ (new)

luna ♡ | 53 comments sometimes, it depends on what book and how heavily i annotate, but not always, sometimes i js wanna read to read

message 21: by ✰lilien✰ (new)

✰lilien✰ | 5 comments yess it looks so pretty and i find it so much easier to concentrate and understand what i'm reading if i annotate

message 22: by Der Ratterich (new)

Der Ratterich I tried it two or three times but each time I feel incredibly awkward about it. I just never know where to put tabs, what to highlight, with which categories to work, etc.

message 23: by Luís (new)

Luís (blue_78) | 452 comments Never. Never. But I already bought books with that costume tradition.

message 24: by han (new)

han (hanhantap) | 14 comments I have a writing degree with a minor in English literature. i physically cannot not annotate when i am reading.

message 25: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 131 comments @killua ok so here’s a few ones i found that i’ve used before that i thought were good, under ten dollars through amazon!

evie *s-ia* | 45 comments Killua wrote: "I always wonder what if you want to re-read your book won't you get distracted by all the tabs and lines and notes?"

not really

i dont reallyt annotate
for several reasons
but a major one is that a lot of my books are library books and i dont wriet in those

HOWEVER
i did annotate one of my favorite books, The Outsiders, not too long ago, and it was really fun just writing notes =)

message 28: by joanna :) (new)

joanna :) | 5 comments i sometimes annotate my books but it depends on what im reading and if i feel like it tbh! most of the time i just annotate classics and any non fiction books i read cause i like to go back and read the notes

Sara the Librarian (museoffire) | 6 comments So I've done this twice for my husband. I've done two books that mean a lot to both of us. The first one was Kissing in Manhattan: Stories because it was the first book he ever gave me and the second was The Gunslinger because its our favorite series like EVER. Very rewarding because he loved them both but dear god was it time consuming.

han (hanhantap) | 14 comments Dee wrote: "Martha wrote: "I am not being confrontational by asking the following question I truly do not understand. What is the purpose of annotating if you're reading for enjoyment and not for a class?"

I ..."

This is why I annotate too! I have a copy of The Perks of Being a Wallflower that has been with me for over ten years. It has tabs, highlights, stains, etc. I read it every two years and it is incredible with what my younger self thought was worth highlighting (an 18-year-old relating to the moving beyond high school to a 20-year-old experiencing a mental health crisis). Annotating a favorite book that you know you will reread is like a time capsule you open every time you read it.

message 31: by Courtney (new)

Courtney muir | 3 comments I haven’t annoted a book until the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. They two books are so heavy on with lots of detail I have been recently annotating the two but I am slowly doing it through re reads because I read to quickly and forgot to annotate throughout

message 32: by Elvira (new)

Elvira Bergquist | 28 comments lol I tried to do it once and it didn’t go very well. I ended up not remembering what I had read, bc I constantly disturbed my flow. Not for me, clearly :)

maïna ˚₊✩‧₊ | 38 comments the only book I've written in is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, but otherwise I don't annotate my books. It takes me too much time and it distracts me from my reading.

message 34: by Chris (new)

Chris St Laurent | 120 comments No I don’t, I pass on my physical books when I am through, yes I like to share but also need to make room for books yet to be read.

message 35: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Bramfeld | 7 comments It depends on the book. If it's nonfiction, I write all over (my opinions, connections, and things I want to remember later) and highlight. If it's for a book club, I take notes of things I want to discuss. I don't write in any other books.

message 36: by rakshya (new)

rakshya | 2 comments I used to want to annotate every book but I realized it would take more time for to read it so now I annotate on specific books. I don’t annotate romance books cause they are just a a lot of them and thrillers. I usually choose books from fantasy, contemporary fiction or historical fiction.

message 37: by Donna (new)

Donna Toland | 30 comments I annotated my divine rivals hardback and really regretting it. Although I loved doing it at the time

message 38: by Kimberlee (new)

Kimberlee (luvmyroarke) | 40 comments I do on some depends on the genre

message 39: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments I got those cheap neon tabs and I'm halfway tabbing my book im not writing in it just tabbing but now I'm out of tabs :((((

message 40: by Madelyn (new)

Madelyn | 1 comments No, if I really like a quote/section I'll just take a picture. Annotating is like torture.

message 41: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments but through how many tabs do yall go when tabbing a book because im not even on page 100 and im already through 2 colors

message 42: by karissa m (new)

karissa m | 139 comments I do not but I want to start this year

message 43: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamsreadneats) | 13 comments My paperback I highlight and tab. There's one book I actually wrote in because it was my friends and she wanted my thoughts in her book. Not sure if I would write in one again though. My hard covers are too expensive to highlight or write in so I just tab them.

message 44: by BethK (new)

BethK | 17 comments I don't annotate any physical book - it just feels wrong. Plus, I usually pass them on, donate, or sell the books I'm done with.

I might write notes on a notepad if I'll be reviewing it or am reading it for some comprehension or information. I can do this with a paper notepad or with an online notepad for an e-book.

message 45: by Molly-Sue (new)

Molly-Sue | 5 comments I tend to annotate books I find are very cleverly crafted, like The Murder of Roger Akroyd by Agatha Christie, or Emma by Jane Austen, but not so much for anything else as I don’t really feel the need to. I like to annotate because it feels more inclusive and I get more interested in the narrative and characters; it’s a way for me to further enjoy reading.

But I think obsessing with aesthetics when annotating takes the fun out of it - so do what makes you happy, it’s your book! Worst comes to worst, use tippex haha!

message 46: by Payge (new)

Payge Peterson | 1 comments I would love to, I’ve thought about it so many times. I just get too wrapped up in the technicalities/labels of what I want to annotate and how… then I psych myself out.

message 47: by Denim ♡ (new)
