I'm enjoying the worldbuilding--took a while for it to sink in, but I like the little bits of "the magic came on" or "the technology came back"

I always felt that the (view spoiler) storyline came a bit out of nowhere and felt the story was one of the more boring ones. Somehow on this re-read though, I was way more into it and decided to raise it from 4 stars to 5. There are some really great moments in this book. Both funny and emotional. As well as a big start to the overarching storyline.

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments Audiobook pet peeve. If you don’t know how to pronounce something in a book you are narrating, please look it up. Don’t just wing it. It’s go-lem. Not goy-lem. The word is used like 50 times in chapter 19 and listening to the narrator mispronounce it has become like nails on a chalkboard.

Oh gods, I hear you! Some of the more horrendous mispronunciations will stay with me for a long time... I keep thinking of how in ALL of the Rick Riordan Heroes of Olympus books Gaea is pronounced "Jee-ah" ugh.

Sometimes it is just as annoying to look up the word and realize they are pronouncing something correctly, just not the way it's pronounced on my coast... What was that word in all of the Joe Abercrombie books? It made me realize just how often the word was used, but I can't for the life of me remember it now...

I dunno if it's a recognized pronunciation, but I feel like that was done because these are Jewish golems, and goy is a jewish word?...

I’m Jewish. I’ve never heard it pronounce Goy-lem before. The synagogue in Prague where Golem were first “created” even pronounces them golem. Goy is a word used for a non Jew. It’s not the creation of Jewish rabbis. I can say with 99% certainty that the narrator is wrong 🙃

message 315: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments Well in Czech we say Go-lem. It's enough to just open wiki to see the pronunciation... Even Google translator reads it right.

Also I feel you, Nirkatze, with the right pronunciations being different from what you know. I was confused when she pronounced gyros as euros lol. I was like wth are they eating.

Go-lem is the right way and only way I’ve ever heard it until this book. Considering they originated in Prague I’m pretty sure the Czech would know what they’re talking about 😂 I thought books had someone editing the narrator usually. When I hear things pronounced wrong or differently in audiobooks I usually just pass on it as whatever. But when it’s 50+ times in one book, like this one is, it starts grating on me.

Yea I know... I'm not saying it was the right thing... it might even be racist/antisemitic to think that's the right way to pronounce it...

Then again, I hear all sorts of weird audiobook pronunciations sometimes...

There's a youtube video saying golem like 50 times, and I listened to a bit of it... and some sound weird, but not goylem weird...

It almost sounds like a cross between gargoyle and golem...

If you're good at linguistics, this linguist subreddit goes into alot of talk about GOAT split, and linguistic drift over time... but I honestly am lost when looking at linguistic syntax and can't really parse...

message 327: by Marie (new)

Marie Chalupová (levitara) | 738 comments Seems to me the Goylem version often appears as Der Goylem so it's probably German oriented pronunciation. Comparing it on Google Translate the y sound is more subtle in German than in English. Might have just been some linguistic effort of adding the y to approximate the perceived pronunciation and over time people started reading it as full y instead.

In German alphabet Y is read as oopsilohn. So the aim might have been for the oo sound? But who knows...

message 328: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

Timelord Iain | 35293 comments Mod
That's what I thought (the top layer German part, not the more in-depth oopsilohn part)

Language is a very interesting thing... we get very possessive of our preferred pronunciations...

But if the word is made up, you can accept almost any pronunciation, as long as it's consistent...

Wandering in has these Antinium with names like:

Klbkch (Killgitch on audio)
Ksmvr (Kissemver)
Xrn (Xern/Zern)

Imperial Radch is constantly referring to the vowel-heavy emperor Anaander Mianaai (audio seems to add a T in Miaatnaai the ways it's pronounced)

Names are different. Until the audiobook made pronunciation there are a billion people pronouncing Jasnah in different ways. But this is a word that has been used for centuries with a generally accepted pronunciation. If a word has been used for a few decades and an only pronounced a certain way I’m inclined to say that’s the correct way to say it.

I can't think of specific examples right now, but I've been jarred by a handful of words on audio over the years, where the narrator chose a less-used or regional pronunciation... and one time I was really unhappy to learn I'd been pronouncing wrong the whole time... that one was kinda my hill... I think it was cache...
