Dev Latimer | 324 comments I’ve often been told by many people who utilize e-readers that they are able to read more books, or read quicker on E-reader devices rather than on a physical book. What is everyone’s opinion of this? Do you feel that you read faster on E-readers, or with a physical copy?

Jael (ivonnini) | 4 comments Physical definitely

Zoe Anne M (theboundlessbookworm) | 98 comments e-reader for me since there's no need to be too careful when lifting every page. Also, I can read at night when all the lights are turned off.

Kiley Pingle (kpingle107) | 39 comments I love both physical and my kindle for different reasons. there is nothing like the smell of a new book and prefer it when reading in the mornings by the fire with my coffee on the weekend. I love my kindle for my lunches because it's super compact and fits better in my purse...I guess you can say it's my on the go reading device. plus I can start a new book on the go right away with my kindle!

Debbie Roth | 17 comments I’m almost 100% digital now. Read Kindles on my tablet in the app, and a lot of them are library platform Libby borrows, which can be opened and read on Kindle app. I can’t say that I read an ebook faster than a physical book, I like the ease of having all my books at my finger tips on a tablet wherever I go, can switch quickly to different books depending on mood, can read in night mode, can adjust type size easily, and also find using Audible narration helps me focus better when reading an ebook. Bottom line though, a good story is great no matter what the format!

Artemis~Ebonie (Inactive) | 65 comments Physical. It reminds me to read more if I have that book sitting next to me or something. With my Kindle, it's just harder to see (I lose it all the time) and I never remember to download new books anyway. Plus I really like just being able to flip the pages of a book.

Lynn (proudtobepride) | 11 comments Definitely my Kindle.

message 8: by Shae (new)

Shae (shaemaria) | 1 comments I read ebooks, because I travel quite a bit and I love to read at night while in bed.

message 9: by T (new)

T (mithrien) | 5 comments I read both but I prefer e-reader because I have all of my books everywhere I go.

Chris St Laurent | 120 comments I like both, advantage of physical books you can give to another to read. I love the local free libraries popping up along the road.

message 13: by Killua (new)

Killua | 364 comments my grandma gave me her old e-reader and i have to download everything from my laptop on it but I couldn't i just could not concentrate because somehow by just holding a thin kind of tablet thingy i couldn't get into it and it really felt like just words on a screen and my eyes started to hurt so i prefer physical book but the fun thing about that old thing is that I can also download music on it and listen to eat while reading but i still prefer physical books because some books are still expensive for e-readers like lets say the book ( fourth wing) its still $12 so I'd rather pay 8 bucks more for a physical copy on my shelf even tho im to broke for either of them lol i mean if i wanted I could buy a few books with the money my sister pays me for babysitting for her kid but its still only $5 and i only have to babysit 2 times a month so thats $10 a month and i can't get a job yet :(

message 14: by Geloü (new)

Geloü I read faster when using my Kobo reader. Though I still love phyical books. EReaders are just really convenient for me to use when I'm on a trip and cannot bring a lot of physical books.

No, Kindle would slow down my reading speed. I prefer hardcovers.

message 16: by Dev (new)

Dev Latimer | 324 comments That’s totally fair! Often times when I hear people make the number one argument for switching to an E-reader or primarily using an e-reader, they cite the fact that they no longer have to carry around a bunch of really heavy books. Literally just the convenience.

Janine Ballard (httpwwwdearauthorcom) | 108 comments Kindle primarily for multiple reasons — reading at night and in waiting rooms, being able to adjust the font, the convenience of borrowing library books. But also saving space in my small living spaces. Before e-readers I had piles of books everywhere.

There have been studies done and they show that people do read faster on e-readers but that they retain the information better when they read in print. For my work-related books (I am a writer and do a lot of historical research) I get print books.

As an aside, I used to love the smell of new books. Then I worked at a bookstore and let’s just say the experience cured me.

☆EmilyEverAfter☆ (emilyeverafter) | 102 comments Kindle 24/7 for me. Honestly, I don't have the space for physical copies. I can adjust the font, and I think that definitely helps me read faster and not lose track like I do on paper.

The smell of new books will never be something I don't love

message 25: by Sam (new)

Sam M I read at the same speed for both, but I remember the books better when I use a physical book. Whenever I read online, it's in one ear, I mean eye, and out the other.

BUT e-books are 99% newly published books which I don't like. Hardly any old and beloved novels.
Plus when I read an (auto)biography, I love to see the same 60+ photos that are in the hardcover version. Can e-book handle that?

In 1993 my first former husband and I drove all the way on his motorcycle from Hamburg, Germany to Corsica, France, in the Mediterranean.
I took the new Maria Riva autobiography (on her life with her mother Marlene Dietrich) and "Gone with the Wind" with me. I finished both books and bought some French books to read on the long way back to Hamburg, Gerrmany.
The two heavy books never inconvenienced me.

I worked at a library for a small amount of time prior to my current job many years ago. It was my favorite when we would get new books to add to the catalog. Book Stores and libraries are my favorite places to go.

This is me too. KU is my favorite! I have had so many good books come across that platform and Its easy on the budget.

message 31: by Ajyah (new)

Ajyah (firefictionreads) | 26 comments I love both but I’ve been reading on my kindle for months. I’ve tried reading physical but it had put me in a slump

message 32: by Moo (new)

Moo | 1 comments I love physical copy but I'm super picky about book-feel. The pages need to smell nice and not be too thick that I have a hard time holding it open (some thicker paper paperbacks really dig into my hands), and the font sometimes is itty-bitty. Plus thicker books tend to just be too heavy for me to cozy up with them.

Kindle is a really nice lightweight option that lets me read anywhere and not squint at tiny print, but sometimes I just want that book-feel satisfaction.

message 33: by Dee (new)

Dee Turner | 17 comments It was almost painful to get rid of hundreds and hundreds of books that had become fodder for earworms, but the house is a lot less cluttered now. I'm disabled, and my Kindle makes reading easier--and as someone above commented, I can read in the dark! (I do maintain a well curated supply of physical books for when the grid fails.)

I think it's not possible to settle a debate based on personal preferences "for once and for all." There's no right or wrong here, and everybody's preference is just fine. Isn't it great that there's still SOMETHING we don't have to adhere to as though it were written in stone?

message 34: by Karl (new)

Karl Lillie | 0 comments Definitely Kindle. I read way more since I started reading ebooks.

message 35: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 4 comments I love a real book as I can keep it like a trophy when I’ve finished it. My kindle is good for reading ARCs but I have to highlight the text in blue as it’s a bit too much contrast sometimes

message 36: by Shann (new)

Shann T (shanntrout) | 8 comments after kids ...kindle more. but before kids physical books.

Books and Chooks | 1 comments Im an Kindle convert.
I have always been a physical book person. I love the feel, smell and look of a book. But its been a very long time since I've been able to finish a physical book. I either lose interest because the gap between reading it too long or find it hard to recall what's even happened.
Since getting my Kindle a month ago I've ready 4 books. I love reading in Bed at night. The only time I get to read is from 10pm - 12am but I couldn't because my husband can't sleep with any type of light on. but with my e reader I can read it on dark mode and not disturb my husband. For an unknown reason my book recall is much better too. I can think back and recall everything about those 4 books. I could never do that with physical books, very strange. My plan now it to buy the physical books of the ones I LOVE and want to keep forever.

message 38: by Donna (new)

Donna Toland | 30 comments I love physical books but I do feel that with e-readers you get through the book easier with not really noticing how far you’re getting through in the book. I also take it everywhere with me so it’s handier to whip out for a few pages here and there.

message 39: by Zuza (new)

Zuza | 14 comments Reading a physical book feels more like ritual that I want to do at home. Yes physical books take more time to read. I also feel that paper/hardcover books are more like trophies. E-reader for me is good compact device that I can use at work or on the go. Also it's easier if I want to try out book or a series and I might not fall in love in it or I don't have a need to be able to touch this specific book.

message 40: by Haley (new)

Haley | 14 comments My kindle is the best gift I've ever received, the convenience of it is just so nice. I love reading it at night or by the water and it's so much easier to travel with, I can pretty much take it anywhere. (Which I do lol) I also read so much faster on my kindle! Though I will say having a physical book is just so comforting, I love being able to go back and forth between pages so easily, especially when books have maps or character lists/pronunciations in the beginning. I also love sharing my books with friends and family and you can't do that with a Kindle. Books are also great decorations, there are so many beautiful covers out there that deserve to be shown off! I used to work near a bookstore and going in to browse was always one of the best parts of my day. As much as I love my kindle, nothing will ever beat the feeling of going into a bookstore and finding a new read.

message 45: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 11 comments before adulthood, physical books. after adulthood, kindle. I just bought mine a year ago and I chastised myself for not discovering this sooner. I have 4-hour commutes every day for my 9-5 so I can get through books easily, especially page-turner ones. I'm never going back to physical books, tbh. I MAY buy ones especially for Stephen King & John Grisham & Sidney Sheldon books (if I find a good bargain for hardbound books) but not as much as I did before.
