Drace (dracenines) | 7476 comments There are a number of issues with various editions of the history book Kill Anything That Moves by Nick Turse.

I’ll be listing editions that need cleanup in the order they appear on the Editions page.

1. All Editions

- The original publication date is incorrect. It should be January 15, 2013.

===

2. Hardcover Edition: Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam (ISBN 9780805086911)

- The parenthetical “(American Empire Project)” needs to be removed. It appears in the search dropdown and the editions page, but not on the book page itself.

- The description is incorrect. Transcribing the description directly from the book jacket:

Based on classified documents and first-person interviews, a startling history of the American war on Vietnamese civilians

Americans have long been taught that events such as the notorious My Lai massacre were isolated incidents in the Vietnam War, carried out by “a few bad apples.” But as award-winning journalist and historian Nick Turse demonstrates in this groundbreaking investigation, violence against Vietnamese noncombatants was not at all exceptional during the conflict. Rather, it was pervasive and systematic, the predictable consequence of orders to “kill anything that moves.”

Drawing on more than a decade of research in secret Pentagon files and extensive interviews with American veterans and Vietnamese survivors, Turse reveals for the first time how official policies resulted in millions of innocent civilians killed and wounded. In shocking detail, he lays out the workings of a military machine that made crimes in almost every major American unit all but inevitable. Kill Anything That Moves takes us from archives filled with Washington’s long-suppressed war crimes investigations to the rural Vietnamese hamlets that bore the brunt of the war; from boot camps where young American soldiers learned to hate all Vietnamese to bloodthirsty campaigns like Operation Speedy Express, in which a general obsessed with body counts led soldiers to commit what one participant called “a My Lai a month.”

Thousands of Vietnam books later, Kill Anything That Moves, devastating and definitive, finally brings us face-to-face with the truth of a war that haunts Americans to this day.

3. Kindle Edition: Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam (ASIN B008FPSTOQ)

- The page count is incorrect. According to Amazon, it is 402 pages.

- The description is incorrect and taken from the hardcover edition. It should read as follows:
Based on classified documents and first-person interviews, a startling history of the American war on Vietnamese civilians

The American Empire Project
Winner of the Ridenhour Prize for Reportorial Distinction

4. Invalid Edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

This edition is invalid, as you can see from the ISBN number having the letters ISBN and a colon in it. It needs to be merged with the actual page for the paperback edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

===

5. Paperback Edition: Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam (ISBN 9781250045065)

- The description is missing formatting and should be the same as the description in Entry 3.

===

6. Invalid Edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

This edition is invalid. I cannot find the ISBN listed here (9780865080911) on any website. It’s not on Amazon, it’s not on the publisher’s website, it’s not on Worldcat. In fact, it appears to be a mistyped version of the hardcover edition’s ISBN. Compare:
9780805086911
9780865080911

It looks like someone swapped the second 0 in the ISBN with the 6. Since this nonexistent ISBN is a typo, a merge is required.

7. Ebook Edition: Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam (ISBN 9780805095470)

- The description is incorrect. It should be the same as the description in Entry 3.

===

8. Spanish translation: Dispara a todo lo que se mueva (ISBN 9788415601692)

- The release date is incomplete. According to Amazon Spain, it was published June 30, 2014. Link for proof: https://amzn.eu/d/72pflnn

===

9. CD Audiobook Edition: Kill Anything That Moves (ISBN 9781622311897)

- The title is incomplete. It needs to be Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam

- This audiobook is listed with a page count, which is incorrect. I know sometimes Goodreads librarians will put the number of hours that the audiobook is in the page count, so if you would like to do so, the publisher lists it as 8.75 hours.

- The description is incorrect. It should read as follows:

Americans have long been taught that events such as the notorious My Lai massacre were “isolated incidents” in the Vietnam War, carried out by a few “bad apples.” However, as award-winning journalist and historian Nick Turse demonstrates in this pioneering investigation, violence against Vietnamese civilians was not at all exceptional. ===

11. Audible Edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

- Don Lee needs to be added with the Narrator role.

- The ASIN is missing. It is B00CLDS6NW.

- The publisher is missing. It should be Highbridge.

- The date published is missing. It should be May 21, 2013.

- The cover art is missing. It is available here: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/W/M... (Amazon link: https://a.co/d/i6GVecZ)

===

12. Digital Audiobook Edition: Kill Anything That Moves (ISBN 9781622311903)

- The title is incomplete. It needs to be Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam

- This edition is mistakenly labeled as an ebook. This is a digital audiobook edition. Publisher website as source: https://highbridgeaudio.com/killanyth...

- The ISBN-10 1622311906 needs to be put in the ASIN field as well.

- The description is incorrect. It should be the same as in Entry 9.

- The publication date is incorrect. It should be May 21, 2013.

- The cover art is missing. It’s available here: https://highbridgeaudio.com/media/cat...

13. More Invalid Editions

All of the following editions were generated by the Amazon bot importing secondhand sellers and all need to be deleted.

Javier (palchetti) | 30514 comments Done (may take some minutes to update), except for:

#2 "American Empire Project" seems to be a series indicator. I do not do non-fiction series so I am skipping this one. I recommend posting a request on the Serieses folder, to verify whether the series is valid at all.

#6 the ISBN-13 is valid, it passes the checksum test. I added the corresponding ISBN-10.

#12 ASIN are Amazon identifiers. As far as I know, Amazon do not sell digital download audiobooks with an ISBN, only Audible editions with an (alphanumerical) ASIN. If that is not correct for this item, please link the webpage on Amazon from where this audiobook can be purchased.

#13 done, except for the Kindle editions. Absence of a webpage on Amazon does not mean those Kindle editions did not exist at any point in time, in fact they get removed from Amazon all the time.

Drace (dracenines) | 7476 comments For #12 - this isn't an Audible edition, this is a digital audiobook sold by a specific publisher (which is linked in the entry). Digital audiobooks that aren't Audible editions are not sold on Amazon, so I cannot provide you with an Amazon link, but the link to the audiobook publisher's website with the book's ISBN is included in entry #12. The book should be labeled as Audiobook, not Audible Audio.

It's part of Goodreads policy that books that do not have an alphanumeric ISBN from Amazon should have their ISBN-10 placed in the ASIN field: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/...

"On Goodreads, ASINs are assigned to all books that appear in the database.... For physical books, in many cases the ASIN and the ISBN10 will be the same."

Other than that, the only other error I can find is that there are some more invalid editions from the Amazon reseller bot that need to be deleted. Links below. Thank you so much for all of your help.

Javier (palchetti) | 30514 comments Second batch of entries merged, except for the first one (it has an ISBN-13, I fixed the title and combined it with the other editions).

I will ask about the ISBN-10/ASIN thing, as I have a different interpretation of the policy.

Drace (dracenines) | 7476 comments Javier wrote: "Second batch of entries merged"

I'm not a librarian, so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the policy for invalid editions to mark them as invalid instead of merging them?

Javier (palchetti) | 30514 comments EDIT: Nevermind, I just noticed the last batch were all bot-generated. I changed the status to Invalid, thanks for noticing.

The whole set of links I posted in message number 3 were also all bot-generated; could you please do the same for them?

Drace (dracenines) | 7476 comments It seems that almost all of the issues are cleaned up, but there is one final issue. Somehow a new page for an edition of the book that doesn't exist has been created: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

The ISBN number seems to be nonexistent and has no results on any website, ISBNs that start with 979 are rarely ever used for physical books (and as far as I've seen, only for independently published titles), and no publisher website has any record of a new edition of the book being published in 2023. This edition needs to be deleted.

Drace (dracenines) | 7476 comments Giving this one last bump re: the nonexistent 2023 edition. If nothing happens within the next week, I'll just mark this thread as complete and start a new one in Book/Author Issues.
